Here's my MSConfig and what I think everything does, I disabled the ones that I think are useless:
Latest Change : 11-16-07
Known Issues:
- Cannot control volume with Fn+F7/F8/F9
- Toolbar in some Windows show lighter grey shades for buttons :
--- <blank> --- No idea.
--- AsTray --- Gives you a tray icon (bottom right) that let's you quick-switch between 800x600 and 800x480 resolution
--- AsAcpiSvr --- Displays the on-screen volume / brightness / cap-num-scr locks displays, I want to disable it because when I run something fullscreen and turn down volume, it minimizes my fullscreen program. But when I disabled it, the screen resolution started going all funky (changing between 800x600 and 800x480 randomly) all the time, so I have to see what I can do with that.
--- igfxtray --- Intel GPU tray icon, allows rotating of screen, panel fit, etc.
--- igfxpers --- Works with the above, I think this one runs the commands, while igfxtray just creates a tray icon that quick-runs igfxpers.
--- ALCMTR --- No idea.
--- hkcmd --- In charge of GPU shortcuts (shortcut key to rotate screen etc), complete garbage in my eyes
--- RTHDCPL --- Realtek High Def Audio Control Panel, complete waste of space and memory
--- SkyTel --- No idea, but I'm running fine without it.
Please CMIIR and add more if you have some, I'll be updating this list frequently.

I kept it enabled because I keep running into the problem where windows are too long and the "Ok-Cancel-Apply" buttons end up off screen, in which case I need the extra height to click the buttons.
Does the same thing happen to you? Because it may be my NLite settings that caused this.

I disabled SkyTel http://www.liutilities.com/products/win … ry/skytel/
I think I will disable hkcmd too if I don't get any problems.
EEE PC seems to run fine without it.

I now only have AsAcpiSvr and AsTray. The last one because I want to be able to switch between 800x480 and 800x600 if needed.
These are all disabled:
igfxtray
igfxpers
ALCMTR
hkcmd
RTHDCPL
SkyTel

RTHDCPL likely does the equalization and sound effect management too; the microphone noise cancellation removes the EeePC fan noise, so may not really be all that optional if you use the mic. Unfortunately, that app also runs and stays resident if you go into the RealTek control panel at any time, so removing it at startup only gets you yay far.

The only items I use is AsAcpiSvr. ALCMTR is "Realtek Event Monitor" and SkyTel is "Realtek Voice Manager". I'm not sure what they do but my audio works without them. (I'm considuring repackaging all the drivers without these utilities for my next XPe build.)

I keep having the same problem with "Ok-Cancel-Apply". I think there was a thread to compress the height somehow, if anyone can help Please

Best solution I've seen for the problem. I can't imagine many better, until someone gets a scaled driver going that doesn't interfere with standby.

Quick question: Do you find it better to disable stuff via msconfig or through the registry? It is very easy to find startups in the registry, they are either under HKLM or HKCU, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion,RUn. If you do it this way the msconfig doesnt run everytime your pc starts.... not positive about this so welcome opinions,

Outside of the registry itself, several softwares run from the start menu, their own options, or/and the activation of windows services.
Should start there before checking msconfig, knowing that msconfig is everything but friendlyl to stop unwanted launches.

MSCONFIG is not a startup manager and should be left alone. it is a trouble shooting utility. disabling items via MSCONFIG will force the computer to boot in selective startup mode constantly.
plenty of better tools out there (e.g. AutoRuns, Startup Control Panel)

Agree with Molly here. I like Startup Control Panel, very handy tool and easy to use.

I may try that. I usually bookmark both HKLM - Software - Microsoft - Windows CurrentVersion - Run and the HKCU path also in the Registry editor on all my computers. If I think they may be important I will use the export function and back it up.
2 Items not mentioned that I wanted to get opinions on are
SuperHybridEngine and AsEPCMonitor?
