Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

SOLVED! Thanks guys!
I am setting up an Eee for my sister in law, who wanted one after hearing about mine.  Running into some problems though.  First thing I did was go to synaptic, reload and apply the changes.  I did this step to get Skype 2 working.  That got me the Skype with video.  Then I used the Synaptic install for advanced desktop.  All seemed to go well until I tried to use Firefox.  I click on the Firefox icon and immediately get a firefox failure feedback form.  When I try to start Firefox from the console I get this: /opt/firefox/run-mozilla.sh:  line 131:  4859 segmentation fault   "$prog" ${1
+"$@"}

Any suggestions as to how I can fix this?  I tried reinstalling the OS, and applying the updates and installing the advance desktop in the opposite order but it still did the same thing.

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

One of the known issues is with a certain Asus update to SCIM. The solution is to either remove SCIM if you don't need it or install Asus package that fixes the problem (look for it in Synaptic).

It could be something else as well, but I doubt it.

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

I had a similar issue after I installed the Firefox update containing the rename to Iceweasel.

Have a look in your program menu and see if Iceweasel is there.

I ended up deleting my Firefox shortcuts and changing my file associations. Iceweasel is now everywhere Firefox was.

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

Well, it looks like it may be related to SCIM (whatever the heck SCIM is), as when I tried to run SCIM from the console I get a message that ended "SCIM closed abnormally).

I went to Synaptic and found the patch, marked it for installation and but when I hit "apply" I get this error message:
E: Unable to parse package file /var/lib/dpkg/status (2)
E: Unable to lock the download directory

I'm probably doing something simple and stupid here, but I haven't a clue what.

ps: I get the same error when trying to remove SCIM

OK, I was able to take care of the "unable to parse..." problem with this http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:unable_to_tparse

And as Mrmot suggested, after removing SCIM, Firefox now works.  THANKS FOLKS!  You guys are great.

SCIM, (as the information in Synaptic seems to  say), is used for non-Western users fonts.  One can therefore safely delete the SCIM files, also using Synaptic if only using Western fonts.

I incidentally also had this problem where Firefox was not loading.  On deleting the SCIM files it is now working without any problems.  I am most appreciative of the advice found in this thread.

The problem arose after I had installed the updates files.  On deleting SCIM, Synaptic indicated that it was deleting this update, which, seemed to be relevant to non-Western use.  (It would be handy if whoever wrote the description of the update they indicated this so that users not needing it could avoid installing it and running into this problem).

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

Thanks,
I had the same issue with firefox and thunderbird after installing the advanced desktop. Runing from console, I got the Segmentation fault report.
With your help i have removed SCIM, and firefox and thunderbird are working fine again.

sudo apt-get install eeepc-updatepack-20071126

fixed everything for me.

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

I just had what appeared to be the same problem, 1 day after using my new eeepc - firefox failed to start from the GUI and if started from the console (ctl-alt-t) came back with the segmentation fault.

The thing that possibly triggered it was installing Skype but possibly some updates had been inadvertently installed.

Anyway I tried:
sudo apt-get remove scim
sudo apt-get install eeepc-updatepack-20071126
installing various updates from the install/remove programs option
but none of these fixed the problem.

Eventually I stumbled across the various options for firefox by entering "firefox -help" on the console.

I then ran "firefox -safe-mode"
This comes up with a menu with various reset options - I reset everything.
Then selected "save & restart"
Firefox then started OK!

Being new to the world of eeepc, I'm not sure if this would have fixed it in the first place or whether it was a combination of steps that fixed it.

Anyway maybe this will be useful to another user.

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

Hi

Just like to say that Johnhd's solution worked for me. Only variation was that I had to run sudo apt-get upgrade from the Console before I restarted firefox in safe mode for it to work.

Thanks Johnhd and everyone for their contributions!

This worked for me too, thank you very much. Though what I'd have done if I didn't have a Windows pc to check the forums on, I don't know...

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

I have a PC 900 that "lost" the Firefox icon in the Easy mode and will not bring up Firefox from the Internet menu selection in KDE.  The latter gives me a "KDEInit could not launch ‘/opt/firefox/firefox’" error message.
As with others, this occurred after a software update.  The machine does not have SCIM, I cannot find "eeepc-updatepack-20071126" with Synaptic and the "firefox -safe-mode"  method doesn't restore Firefox.  I can use "ICEWeasel" from a terminal but I'd like to restore firefox operation from icons and menu selections as before.

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

I'm unable to get firefox back. I ran
sudo apt-get install eeepc-updatepack-20071126
and the iceweasel icon is still in the tray, but clicking on it gives the can't launch firefox error message.

I tried
sudo apt-get remove scim
and no luck.

I've tried
sudo apt-get upgrade
but I don't have enough free space to unpack it.

Running firefox and firefox -safe-mode from the console both launch iceweasel.

I'm willing to use weasel, but as a Linux noob, I don't know how to set it up so that it's in the tray and all.

What's the easiest thing for me to do, considering I have no clue.

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

Okay, here's what I did that finally trashed iceweasel and gave me firefox back:
In the terminal I typed

Code:

sudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list

Kate loaded with several error messages in the terminal. I found firefox and iceweasel in the World Wide Web section and selected iceweasel for complete removal. A message box told me that firefox and one other app were dependencies and would be removed, too. I thought about it. I'd still have Konqueror, so what th' heck. I removed iceweasel, taking firefox with it.

Back to the advanced desktop, the iceweasel icon is gone from the tray, replaced by the K gear. I clicked it and firefox wouldn't load.

Back to terminal, where I typed in

Code:

sudo apt-get update

This time it ran like a champ. Then I typed in

Code:

sudo apt-get install firefox

Installation worked fine; there's still the gear icon in the tray, but it launches firefox with all my bookmarks and other prefs set as if I'd never left it. I did have a debian respository in my list o' repos, so I commented it out, hoping this would stop iceweasel from popping up its head again.

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

You need to pin the repositories so iceweasel will not overwrite firefox.

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

Many thanks for that link, plodr. I have two questions.

It says do everything on the page or nothing. Is that your recommendation, too?

It also says, "###deb http://xnv4.xandros.com/eeepcrepos/ p701 etch main - THIS IS CAUSING ISSUES - subsequent 'apt-get update' giving errors -### Expert required to amend this edit to something more meaningful or fix…." The xnv4.xandros link is in the list of 'approved' repositories. Any thoughts on that?

Re: Firefox not working after updates - Advance desktop install

I would not enable the http://xvn4 repository because the address is wrong.
(In other words, when you open synaptic and see it in the list, make sure there is never an x in front of it and you will be okay). It will not do any harm if you have it listed but never use it.
Eventually someone will fix the wiki page and maybe the errors will go away.
I would pin all the repositories as mentioned.
