Hi everyone,
Has anyone of you got analog and digital TV working with some tiny USB TV dongle on the Asus EEE? Must be cool to use it as a television while travelling!

I had no problem getting the Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 working under XP and the picture is not bad at all, mostly due to the high dpi of the eeePC screen. The CPU and GPU are more than capable of dealing with decoding digital TV signals.
Getting this to work under Xandros is much more difficult, however, and involves a lot of console work and kernel recompilation, so is probably better left to a clean install of another flavour of Linux.

Interesting, grunk!
I wonder if anyone has one working with Xandros at all!

Here you can find a list of general USB TV dongles which are know to be working or not working with Linux:

Maybe it doesn't work under linux but here you can find a cheap usb tv adapter.

I thought of that but since I hate.... absolutely hate all things controlled by mass media corporations.... I would hate it.
None-the-less a great idea and please let us know your mileage on the ordeal.

EEE would do DVBT easy. I had an old PIII 933 running as a mythtv box. It could do live tv (with pausing) or playing back a recording while recording something else so the EEE could do even better. The high specs on the box are for windows which seems to need 4 times the power!

There is an easy way to get DVBT with EEE,ASUS U3000mini can support EEE both Linux and Windows,
Linux driver for U3000mini
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/vga/tv … Drv_12.zip
Linux TV application for U3000mini
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/vga/tvtuner … _15713.zip
Windows TV application for U3000mini (Special support 800x480 resolution)
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/vga/tv … 60beta.zip
I have success install it and watch DVBT TV .
Linux install steps:
1.Put related file in home folder and extract it.
2.Install Driver: after unzip the driver file, there will be 3 file, press ctrl+alt+t to open console mode, press "sudo su" to get administrator , and then press "./install_u3000"
3.Install Application: the same, in console mode press"./install_vdr"
4.After that, reboot is needed, and for first time using, press F1 to select country and then scan channel.
5.Hot keys : Esc -> exit , up -> channel up down -> channel down .

Windows install steps:
The same as normal windows driver and TV application .

Hi, Yoda,
I am not sure why you can not download.
But You can find these files on www.asus.com, it's in download page of U3000mini

Many thanks for the additional links. Atb Derek.

If you are in the US, please keep in mind the under-announced changeover to broadcast DIGITAL TV starting next year (2009). Any analog tuners WILL NOT WORK without some kind of adapter, like the converters (supposably on sale - haven't seen one yet), or a cable/Satellite box.

This is a very valid point.
Unless the device can also tune in radio stations, it'll just be a USB dongle after Jan/09.

I have the Hauppauge HVR-900 usb TV stick and am not having good luck running it
as a Digital Tuner. I have Win XP loaded and using WatchHDTV and on all the Digital
channels, it seems to freeze after about 5 seconds, audio is ok. This is not even
using the recorder either.
I have 1GB memory and CPU load is about 40% even if the picture is frozen, but
audio is fine. (I have tried VMR7/force primary/and Use overlay).
The HVR-900 runs great on my iMAC C2D running XP under boot camp.
Anyone using the HVR-900 with Digital TV on the EEE PC... NOT overclocking?

Has anyone found a USB Digital TV receiver which works and doesn't require an additional antennae attachment ??
The USB sticks I have seen have rather weak antennaes, requiring the antennae attachment or an external aerial.

Most of the USB TV sticks are either digital tuners, or digital/analogue tuners however so should be fine.

Well finally my asus U3000mini turned up this morning, I found a company in the uk called DigitalKind that sells them. And it does work really well, I have noticed in the linux version, there are no radio stations
. I will try it in XP later to see if any radio stations appear on there. I found it very very easy to install, so many thanks Kaiger for showing me how to install the software as well as bringing it to my attention. Well add to this post later about XP. Atb Derek.

The Nebula USB works great on the XP (provided that you overclock), but requires an external aerial.

I am using a Kworld DVB-T 323U USB tuner and Arcsoft Total Media Monitor 3.5. The SD digital reception is working just fine. The Mpeg 4 HD is giving me the symptoms you describe. So it is clear for me that the eeePC is not able to decode HD signals. But when freezes the CPU is at 100%.
My PC runs stock ASUS Bios and has 1GB DDR2 RAM and XP Professional.

Sux to be in Canada, I onlt have 2 local stations. In Taiwan, digital TV is free and broadcasted through air. Here they even want to charge for satellite radio. This is so stone age...

I think the U3000 is the best bet, Windows and Linux and it's Asus. I refuse to buy anything for my Eee that won't work in Linux. Also on sale at ebuyer for less than £20 at the moment.
I plan to buy one, but not until I get some more money, I only bought my eee last week and have already bought a load of accessories for it. So I need to wait a bit.
Anyway, I'm hoping to put the U3000 inside the Eee and then do something similar to the external arial mod ( http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=8960 ) so that I can connect an aerial when I want to use it. I don't believe it would be worth attempting to have an internal aerial because I've never found small TV aerials to be reliable, but I live in Wales so that might just be me.
Not too keen on drilling through my case, but as TV aerials are a simple coax thing, perhaps it will be possible to find a cable and socket connection that will fit in modem socket? Obviously it wouldn't be an exact fit, but with the cover on it wouldn't matter.
Anyone else have similar ideas?

I wonder if this is going to work, because usually USB TV dongle requires high CPU usage. I'm not sure if the eee's CPU will be strong enough to keep up with that.
If it's got built in MPEG2 compression, it should be fine. It means the CPU won't have to do all of the work.

I'm having a lot of trouble getting the U3000 Mini to work with my eee pc (in fact "not" to date!). The files listed above give an error message when I try and load them. Are you sure the sequence listed above is correct?

I had no trouble getting the HVR-900 up and running under Windows, and it ran without freezing for me. Linux was another matter. I tried first on a Dell I have running stock Ubuntu 7.10 and succeeding in gettng a channel up and running under TVtime after downloading the appropriate firmware. However, I could not get the scan channel to find any additional channels. I suspect the channel I did pick up was analogue due to the mediocre picture.
My time is worth more than £20 to me, so I have ordered the ASUS U3000 mini as suggested above. Will see how that goes.

I've just bought the Hauppauge PVR-USB2 from Amazon. Unfortunately it's quite big but it does have built in MPEG2 compression, so I'll try it out when my eee arrives.
