I just used the Asus update utility in pure boredom and was surprised to find that a BIOS update is now available!!!
Changes noted:
The BIOS bootscreen is now golden.
BIOS infos:
-ASUS ACPI Bios revision 8804
-Core version 8804
-build date 07/25/07 (Ha ha! The had put the wrong BIOS on the eee pc for the first shipment!!!)
-ec_firmware version 701_065
The FSB can now be changed between 70MHz and 100MHz in the advanced menu!!!
The USB2 enhanced controller is now detected by Windows XP and looks fonctionnal.

What's the max speed the CPU can run..? Screenies please, if possible. Thanks! ![]()

oh oh... Now Windows XP hangs intermittently on power up...
Offline
Err....too much heat generated?
Offline
It looks like the hanging is due to the reinstallation of whatever chipset driver that occured at reboot. I had not changed the FSB speed yet...
The difference that I have noticed is that in Windows XP, the CPU info was reported as a 900MHz cpu running at 630MHZ when the 70MHz FSB was active. Switching it to 100MHz makes Windows report it as a 900MHz CPU running at 900MHz. No benchmark yet to measure objectively the difference.

that's a great news, i hope it wont affect heat and battery life much though..

Great!
How much bogomips is the 100 Mhz version?
And where/how did you get this bios? It is not listed if I go to add/remove programs, settings.

Definitely great news!
On the other hand, this just makes my wait more unbearable. Arghh!! ![]()

In their XP machines, Asus usually has a so-called Asus update utility that checks for updates directly from the Asus site and downloads them. I can only assume that Techking installed XP on his Eee and the Asus update utility was on the Windows driver CD that comes with the machine.
How Linux users can update the BIOS, I have no idea - perhaps download it directly from Asus' site?

The BIOS update is not listed on the ASUS website.
Download the Windows XP utility from their website (ASUS update utility v1.00.04):
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/EeePC4G(701)/AsusUpdate_XP_071011.zip
Install it on your magnificent eee_pc running Windows XP and start Asusutility
Select Update BIOS from internet.
Ftp ... blablabla... next
And it shows up in the list as 8804.
Unfortunately, it might be a coincidence, but since I have posted this e-mail a few minutes ago, the ftp site has been unreachable because of too many users trying to connect ;-)
Good luck.

For Linux, use the perl script /usr/sbin/biosupdate.pl.
The 8804 version is dated from 07/25/07
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/EeePC/701/
The 0204 is dated from 10/05/07
http://update.eeepc.asus.com/bios/
The perl script use the last one.

Windows XP setup on an external CD reader is MUCH faster with USB2 working !

WARNING: I STRONGLY DISCOURAGE UPGRADING TO THE NEW BIOS. EVEN BACK AT 70 MHZ THE SYSTEM IS NOT STABLE FOR ME ANY MORE !!!! SOMETIMES THE SYSTEM ALREADY HANGS IN THE BIOS
Thanks TechKing, Kibobo,
The following command did the job for me (as superuser):
biosupdate.pl --install ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/EeePC/701/701-8804.zip
this will download, then you'll be asked to reboot and the bios will be updated.
To be safe, you do want to do this with your 701 connected to the power and with a full battery
next reboot when asked and type F2 in the boot screen to verify your work.
I tried the system with the bus speed at 100 Mhz, but it is not very stable.
(first time it did not boot, 2nd time it hung after a short while, 3rd time it ran long enough to give some info).
Anyway, the performance increased from 1261 to 1801 bogomips.
Still there are some more changes in the bios that seem to make it worthwhile to get this bios (at 70 Mhz)
Edit: I'm back at the old bios. Too much issues, although it looks tempting.

eFfeM, what all can be configured in the BIOS ?
Boot device
FSB clock
Boot password
BIOS password
??
And, if you forget one of the passwords (if there are any), is it a case of "disconnect the CMOS battery" or "send in for service" ?

Didn't make screenies. Sorry.
I can make a post of what is the original bios. No way I'm going back to the new bios.
I had issues of freezes and continuous error messages about the network card not being able to connect.
Not sure if there is a disconnect cmos battery (it is not in the bios, but it could be in the hw).

Oh that is a bummer! However, if they sell them here in the UK with only 677Mhz processor speed they will fall foul of the Trade Description Act!
Which in turn means they either have to fix it, or alter the official specs.
The existence of this first BIOS upgrade gives me hope that they will fix it.

To be exact, it DOES have a 900MHz CPU. It's juts running at 677Mhz. All they have to do is add a bit that says "adjustable FSB" and they're probably clear.
Offline
Jon the official specifications on the website, and also on the packaging photos that we've seen make no reference to the specific type of processor or its operating frequency
. Although I have no knowledge whatsoever of UK trade law I cannot see how they could be in any trouble.

The "new" BIOS does hang randomly...

Where do ASUS state the faster speed (or any speed come to that) of the CPU?
I have had a look around their site, under CPU & chipset it has a tick.

My fault, I made an assumption based on all the specs I'd read... ![]()
