I've hd my EEE for several hours I though to guys deserved some opinion. The screen's great if a little small for long term use. I really like the noob interface. Its simple to use and the big icons work really well with the small screen and touchpad. The keyboards quite hard to get use too. I keep hitting the up key instead of the Shift. I do think I'll get use to it fairly soon.
The video player works well. I've just watched the die hard 4.0 trailer thats on the EEE SSD with it.The speakers sound good but a little quite compared to my laptop but its pretty good for the size.
The cases is really just a slip and I expect I'll get something better soon.
I've had some problems mounting DVD using my external drive, however command line manual mounting works for me. You may have more luck. I've updated several pieces of software successfully.
I've changed the language (see tips and tricks post) and changed the update repository to the english using synaptic package manager.
wifi works well. I'm using WPA with no problems.
The white is pearlecent like some cars. It shines quite nicely.
Any questions or config files you want to see let me know in a reply and i'll do my best to answer. I'll put some more thoughts on later.

thanks for the info, please keep them coming; always great to hear from first hand and inside from the eeeuser.. i am sure in a minute this tread break the view and reply records..

Could we have a report on the external display issue? Is thi 800x600 limit just a simple config file? If so it should be very easy to rectify.

Cheesemp,
Where did you get yours from? I have a pre-order with Clove but - bloody hell thats quick!

Cheesemp, what can you tell about about the quality of the keyboard? I have used some laptops, with keyboards that are somewhat spongy. How does the Eee PC fair, also what about the overall build quality? Thanks.

Chris, You will soon learn how he did it.
Cheesemp, you did well so I won't hit you with a lot of questions today. I will let you enjoy your new toy.
But while I have your attention please tell all about the linux (Xandros) software. how well does it work?

You really shouldn't have said you have one
. Though I do have some questions, now that I think about it
. Is the n00b-ish interface a kind of skin, or is that what will remain and can't be reverted to a normal desktop interface? Also, how is the audio? Have you tried turning it up until the audio starts to sound tinny (if it does at all)? I won't post any more questions as I know you'll get more soon
.

i've just tried it on my 21" crt - I can choose 1600 x 1280! I can choose about 10 different resolutions. Wasn't expecting that.

Its a little spongy - I used much better but its ok. To be honest i'm finding hitting the up key instead of the shift most annoying. The overall build quality seems very good - I can't see any loose panels or poorly painted areas.
@chris jones - Taiwan - A guy at work was out there and picked up two - one for me and one for himself. Only 185GDB - Quite a saving over UK price.
@pcfy2 and teh_programerer - Xandros seems really well put together. Everything just seems to work. Wireless, plugging in an external monitor. Camera. It all fits together very well. I'll let you know more as I use it more. I expect the n00b interface is just an alternative shell and can be replaced by changing a KDE config file (I know the Gnome equivalent but I don't know KDE very well). It does work well enough for me at the moment, and I'm going to investigate to see if you can add extra icons like you can with windows start menu.
The audio seems ok but I've not tried any music on it yet. I'll try it out tomorrow and update.

My turn ![]()
Have you tried installing any additional software? Is Liferea (sp?) in the repositories? (or a KDE equivalent, I suppose) Have you left it running on the battery yet? Have you tried the camera with chat yet?
Much more ... ![]()

On topic of the output resolution, can the Eee PC output 1920x1200 or is 1600x1280 the max?
Offline
I have a nice LCD screen that I love, but it's 1600x1200, not 1600x1280. Is 1600x1200 on the list of resolutions?

he said WPA in his post

wireless security can be set to both WEP and WPA. I have not seen WPA2 in the list.
keyboard is indeed spongy. Apart from the shift I am mostly having problems with the backspace.
External sw is no big deal, the package managers seem to work; I did not get that far but I copied an exe from my ubuntu system and it ran without changes (it did not need new libraries, all libraries needed where there already).
Xandros is fine, but the chinese text in the options screens etc makes it difficult to configure things.
@cheesemp: do the localisation changes fix that? I even got chinese error messes from bash or from chmod (not sure which one it was)
The high res mode is definitely nice.
One of my jobs is being a teacher; this seems to be a pretty nifty device to bring along my powerpoints and connect to the beamer in the classroom.

hey cheesemp:
when you're placing the eee on a table, approximately how long(distance) do you need to lean forward for typing stuffs in 12 font for word processer?

Cheesemp, thanks for sharing your feelings with all of us!
I understand we can get higher comfort at home connecting it to an external video/keyboard/mouse, while it is still usable on the go... and this is exactly what I'm looking for!
Can you tell us more about the connectivity? Did you try the wi-fi extensively? What about connecting it to a mobile phone through the bluetooth (ext. I guess...) ? Any issue with drivers?
Thanks for your answers ![]()

@cheesemp
Congrats on finally getting one of these sweet babies. I was hoping you could provide some info that would help me in finishing off my custom Linux distribution.
1. What device node does the SSD map to? (/dev/hda, /dev/sda, /dev/hdb?) and what device node do USB sticks come up as?
2. If possible can you
cd /boot/
and send me (PM or e-mail) the kernel configuration (It should be called /boot/.config-kernel-version), That way I can get a good kernel built into the default installation media so most hardware works using the Live install.
3. can you run
cat /proc/cpuinfo cat /proc/meminfo lsmod
and post the results of each command so I can get some info about the default settings.
If you could provide any of that information I would be eternally grateful!
Enjoy your new baby!

Congratulations cheesamp on getting one...
I'd also be interested in what timbosteve has asked for (kernel config, lsmod etc)....I'd appreciate it if you could also run :
lspci -v
mount
Also, what boot loader does it use?
How exciting!!!...

the info timbosteve is asking for should be in the wiki.
probably also list /proc/partitions
don't have mine handy, so can't post the info.

Thanks for the links. The only thing I am think will be troublesome is getting the wifi module to load into a non-Xandros kernel.
Anyway... I will get to that once my unit arrives. Thanks again.

I think it's simply the madwifi driver for Atheros AR5006EG (/lib/modules/2.6.21.4-eeepc/madwifi).
And you can be able to load it in others kernel (maybe desactivate the versioning checking).

I might just use the backported madwifi drivers from backports.org. Thanks for the heads-up!

Cheesemp, is there any reason not to buy a Taiwanese version, other than the warranty + plug? Incidentally, how have you solved the plug issue?
