Thanks for a great guide!
I've encountered one problem that I cannot understand, when I try this command
robocopy /copyall /e /move "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository" "D:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository"
mklink /j "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository" "D:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository"
I get an "Access is denied" on mklink.
I am in repair mode, i.e. not within Windows itself. I find it quite strange, and I do not know how to fix it...help please?!?
Edit: I get the same error on the next dir (...\DriverStore\Temp...)

you have to do it by booting into setup again and then opening a cmd windows with shift-f10

@tamaire
-I added the "" in the the winsxs cleanup section
-I don't know why your sd card got messed up with the bootsect command. I never encountered that before
@LionelHutz
-I deleted the option to boot into repairmode in the move program files section
thanx for the feedback!

Just thought I would post this tidbit in case anyone runs into the same issue:
The ACPI driver MSI will fail to install if you have System Restore disabled. So, install the driver before turning SR off.
Offline
@azl: this is not the case, it is not related at all.
I reinstalled my eee many times and first turn off system restore.
Don't know why you ran into problems.

If you're running SHE, i'm assuming you mean to say you have a 900A (atom based model)?

No , i 've a 900 (with celeron processor) .

So is SHE your only issue now or is "consider replacing your battery" still a problem as well?
Have you run CPU-Z to see actual system performance under the different SHE settings?
Online
so ..i have 2 different problems...but both regards "power management" .
the principal difference i have seen between windows xp and seven is the duration of the battery . Seven requires more power to works . (there are several topic in microsoft forum about this behaviour) .
1)The problem of the message "consider replacing your battery" is a big problem that seven have and it is under investigation by microsoft but no-one knows the time for the resolution of this. In the social microsoft network you can find several topic about this problem ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For … 6ca2f865d6 ) . the problem still persist now ...As a workaround i've disabled power icons and power actions from power management application in windows, and now i use "batstats" that read the correct information from the battery . Obviously the battery-duration remain the same but i can check when it really requires the AC cable.
2) The last problem i wrote is only "cosmetic" . I've installed SHE without to know that it doesn't work on the non-atom machine (i ve a celeron based eeecpc). I was in doubt because when i plugged in or plugged out the AC cable i saw different power scheme
I ve tested the situation with cpu-id and the speed of the cpu didn't change,so now i use eeectl not-automatic than SHE but with it i can change brightness ,speed , fan cooler.
I hope that Microsoft will correct the problem at the point 1. There are several machine type with different brand recent or not , that have the problem.
thanks,bye

Birdibird, I have a mysterious bug freezing my system which turned out to be caused by the latest Ralink driver (v 3.0.7.0) which is linked in your first post.
The solution is to go for an earlier version - v 3.0.1.0 is available through Windows Update or v 3.0.3.0 is available at http://www.driversdown.com/drivers.asp? … mp;show=0.

Ok, another issue that flows from moving the Program Files folder is that some Windows Updates may fail with error 80070011. They don't expect Program Files to be on another drive. I got this with KB974431.
There are a couple of complex solutions available which involve editing pending.xml - but I found a much easier solution which should probably be part of the standard procedure above.
You need to edit the ProgramFilesDir and CommonFilesDir values in the registry at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion to point to D: (or whatever drive you junctioned to) instead of C:

I have install Win7 for my 901. I followed the tutorial and installed over 5 times, and the same problem happens over and over again.
After using vlite to slim down the Windows 7, it seems something important is missing in the package. Windows 7 were not able to install USB controller and Sounds driver. I tried to download the original drivers, but fail to install during installation process. Anyone have similar experience. Also, the OS seems to be super slow as well.
**I have tried to install Win7 with original ISO, and no problem on the speed and drivers.

Since you're the one that started this discussion, I wanted to ask you something, reganding a problem I'm having with Win7 and my EEEpc 901 4GB SSD and 8GB SSD.
I Shrunk a legal copy of Win 7 Ultimate 32bits with Vlite, and I put it in a USB thumb drive(2GB) to install it in my eeepc 901. I made the tweaks you told us to do and it did increase the hard drive size. Though, the problem comes when it, the Eeepc 901, boots up. After the Windows logo shows up, the one that says "STARTING WINDOWS", the screen goes blank and after an hour, or probably more than an hour, shows the desktop.
I read in this same post that the possible problem is that the computer goes into hibernation automatically right before the desktop shows up. I tried several solutions already, yet I still have the problem.
Solutions tried:
-Tried disabling hibernation with command prompt. No LUCK
-Tried installing the VGA driver, no luck
-Tried installing the drivers, about 4, that you gave us for download. No luck
Some say that the BIOs is old, but since I already erase win XP so I can't install the newer version. Is there any other way to install the ROM file that updates the BIOs into windows 7?
I got the files already.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there! Thanks much for this!
However, in my case I've been running Win7 for a while and started junctioning to free some space. As a test I just junctioned "FileRepository." When I restarted into normal Windows, it correctly shows the files on D:, correctly shows the directory on C: to be a junction (different icon,) and even the parent folder [DriverStore] now only shows that directory to be a couple megs.
HOWEVER, the total free-space right-clicking on C: is still showing the same size as before.
I'm an engineer and am familiar with junctions...I did it often at a previous job in XP...could I have found some glitch in Win7 that is still reading the link to d: as used space? (or is there something I missed?)
Thanks much! I'm pretty crippled until I can get some space off c:!
I have the same problem. The files are on D: but there is no space freed up on c:
Anybody knows a fix for this?
edit: I tested to copy a 350 MB file to c:\program files.
In this case no more space is taken up on c:, so this file appears to be only on the d: disk. So probably my problem is that when doing the robocopy thing, the files copied from c: to d: instead of moved there.

zanker you don't new need to make your copy of WIN 7 smaller. You got plenty of space in your 500GB HDD eeepc, if i'm not mistaken your machine HDD Drive(1000he). I guess that you best shot is to install the whole ISO file in a 8GB or 4GB USB stick or SD card, USB is easier use UNITBOOT to make the ISO file bootable on the 8GB or 4GB stick.
YOu don't even need this tutorial in this forum because you're gonna do a simple clean install of WIN 7 completly, without any component left out.
Don't use Vlite for you're install because you might be leaving out some important components that people with less HDD space, not your case, must leave, ex: 4GB SSD HDD Eeepc Users.
Just download POWERISO and UNITBOOT to make the WIN 7 folder an ISO file and then use UNITBOOT to save the ISO file into the USB Stick and then the same software, UNITBOOT, will do the rest for you by making the USB stick bootable for your convenience. EZ!!!
Later...

FOR EVERY USER trying to install WIN 7 into your eeepc 901, 900, or 900A, The best solution is to buy a PCI-E to ZIF adapter and a 1.8" HDD and you'll have plenty of space to install WIN 7 with its components. Both, the adapter and the HDD, will cost around $20 USD on Ebay, Adapter $5.99 free S/H and 20GB HDD 1.8" $15.99 Free s/h "USA only".
You got the chance to buy a bigger HDD, bigger in internal memory, but it will cost you more $$$$$$. OK
See you guys.

I looked into the problem a bit more. I just tried to delete "C:\Program Files" after a fresh install. This should free up about 200MB. I used these commands:
del "c:\Program Files" /f /s /q /a
rmdir "c:\Program Files" /s /q
Before I deleted Program Files, my C has 697,901,056 B free. After deleting program files I have 698,802,176 B free. The files are really gone but only about 1 MB more free space. I am clueless...
edit: after some more research, I think I found the source of my problem. When moving the Program Files to the D: drive, it look like the Program Files on C: are gone. However, the files in C:\Program Files are actually located in the winsxs folder, and remain there even after moving Program Files to D:.
I don't have a solution for really moving the files from C: to D: yet. Any help would be appreciated.

one of the best threads here... vlite doesn't produce a setup file or there is no setup file in the folder that vlite is ran on. is this the issue?
