CDs out, USBs in?

http://www.engadget.com/tag/usbdrive,music Neat idea. I also heard that Windows 7 will/is available on USB drive. Could this be a sign of things to come? Are netbook/CULV laptops really that big of deal? If so.. cool.

Yes and No.  Sure, a single CD is less costly than an USB, but it is write once.
If you are doing backup, an USB might be better suited since you do not
need to keep old files.  So it depends on how use you use the media.

p.s. I use mostly DVD's, but then I'm old-fashioned.

Re: CDs out, USBs in?

Yeah but as far as software publishers switching from optical disk to usb drive? I don't see it really happening due to cost. Now with Blu Ray you can fit @50 GB on a 5" disk, way cheaper than putting it on flash drive.

Even taking into account the long term landfill space costs associated with disposal? Also dont for get the cost of all  jewel cases, packaging, shipping costs and optical drives too! all that stuff has to end up some where when we toss it.

Re: CDs out, USBs in?

there isnt really a need for cd's anymore once you look at it, for example if i need to use a cd (which i cant with my netbook, i dont have an external dvd drive) i just put the cd in a desktop and decrypt the cd, then i burn the files onto a flash drive, i do that all the time for my movies or special software, and once im done with the files i just wipe my usb for some other purposes.

Eee PC 900, 2gb Gskill RAM, 32gb Runcore SSD+16gb stock SSD, 10400mA battery, Bluetooth, new Ralink 2860 wifi card
running eeebuntu 3.0 base on my Runcore, Kubuntu desktop 9.10 on my stock 16gb ssd, and puppy 4.3.1 on a 2gb SD card
eeecontrol set to 1.1 GHz on battery, or 405MHz for extremely long battery life cool

Re: CDs out, USBs in?

I agree that the CDs will follow the Cassette tape and the Diskette for computer use.

Especial when software and hardware companys shipping out unfinished games (and OS:es) and firmware. That needs to be upggraded by the internet anyway.

BTW. At my work we save our ABB robot programs on 1.44 MB Diskettes, wich is far more convient then the punched tape we used on CNC-machines at my first work.

For music I can't see any replacement for the CD even if I got my whole CD-archive ripped to mp3s
I believe, the Blu-ray will be scrapped before the more widely spread DVD

I welcome the USB-memory wich can be made extremly cheap and small. Still I will keep my external CD-drive as long as it works
