Synaptic Error Message

Whenever I type 'sudo synaptic' from a command line, or a console window I get an error message with the title " Unable To Get Exclusive Lock.' Then follows a few sentences: ' This usually means that another package management application [is] already running. Please close that application first.'

I was able to install and use k3b CD/DVD burner.

I don't know what that application is, nor, how to find out. Re-booting doesn't solve this.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Synaptic Error Message

How did you install k3b?
With synaptic, apt-get, dpkg or aptitude?
Was that the last installation so far?

Also open the task manager and have a look if there is another
package management application running.

Greetings

Re: Synaptic Error Message

I installed k3b, via synaptic, per your instructions, about 10 days ago. It worked fine and I've opened synaptic since then until yesterday. Your instructions were, I think spot on and my readings since  have further convinced me of this. I have not installed anything else since then.

Re: Synaptic Error Message

Did you check the task manager?
Check also the different process-sections like "system processes" etc.
(button "application processes")

Re: Synaptic Error Message

I forgot the Task Manager info.
In Task Manager with no programs initiated by me I found: in "ALL PROCESSES" update services to be running and in "OWN PROCESSES" xorg and ksysguardd to be running. In "SYSTEM PROCESSES" update services was running but, with a 55% of use which was much higher than the others listed here.
Also,I should have included in my prior post that: at the command line after typing Sudo synaptic and enter the following appears:

"(synaptic: 14825): Gtk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library. Using fallback 'C' local"

auf wiedersehen

Re: Synaptic Error Message

Let's see if it's just a problem of synaptic or a problem of APT,
the package manager itself.
Type in a terminal: sudo apt-get update
That command will refresh the list of packages like the reload
button in synaptic.
If that works like it should then it seems that it's just a synaptic
problem.

Greetings gringo

Re: Synaptic Error Message

It sounds to me as if Update Services is running and that is blocking your ability to use Synaptic--since both are package managers. I'd look into disabling Automatic Update Services.

Re: Synaptic Error Message

Gringo: I think your idea worked except there were a few 'error' lines at the end of the data from apt-get update entry. However entering 'sudo synaptic still won't let me see the packages.

But surprisingly OldAdamUser2's idea about update Services may have hit pay dirt.

I opened 'Add/Remove Software' and staring at me are a few 'failed install' updates and 1 of them still trying to install. This situation was not going on when I had completely installed these same updates. The one that is trying to install doesn't seem to be able to finish and also seems to be using many CPU cycles as everything runs slow.
I find this to be amazing. How did the install fail when it is supposed to be self running after you click install?

Auto download of updates was disabled.

I still can't get to see the synaptic packages.

Re: Synaptic Error Message

That's strange.
As long as it's trying to install something, you can't use synaptic.
Just a thought, open the task manager and click the mentioned
update service line. Now click "kill".
That normally should end the process.
After that try again synaptic.

Greatings gringo

Re: Synaptic Error Message

I opened 'Add/Remove Software

If you do any bit of searching here, you'll discover that clicking on that is not the best idea. ASUS seems to regularly break things.
Most of the old eeepc owners here have not touched that icon after it broke something. Also the newer models that have the auto update feature, some have taken to turning that off, particularly if the eeepc has a small ssd. The updates send too many packages, you end up with no space and it starts into a reboot loop. Probably space is not an issue for you on the 1000 but it is still not a bad idea to turn off automatic updates and use synaptic to decide exactly what you want to install.

Re: Synaptic Error Message

I opened 'Task Manager', then 'System Processes' and tried to 'kill' the install process, but was unable to do so. There was a message box which said 'Insufficient permissions to kill process 2049.' I let the machine run for a few hours but the update never finished. Strangely the update says its for Adobe v. 10 and my checking shows that v.3 is on the machine. Or, am I looking at apples and oranges?

Auto updates were turned off for the reason that Plodr addresses. This was a manual update to Adobe Acrobat that I started after an F9  OS re-install.

Re: Synaptic Error Message

I'd try opening a terminal window (ctrl-alt-t) and typing in "sudo ps" (without the quotes). If the rogue process is listed, you can kill it with "sudo ps -9 #process#" where #process# is the listed number of the offending process.

Re: Synaptic Error Message

I tried OldAdamUser2's advice, but the prooblem still persists. I think I see an OS change to EeeBuntu my future.

If, I suppose the only fix is a reinstall of Xandros.
