I have an eee PC 900 and am having a problem with Windows XP SP3 and the Asus ACPI driver. Without the ACPI driver installed the 900 runs fine (but as expected, some of the softkeys don't work and it has an "unknown device" in device manager).
The problem is that when the ACPI driver is installed and the 900 is operating on battery power, the 900 hangs and the screen becomes garbled. With the AC adapter plugged in the 900 runs fine with or without the ACPI driver. But load the ACPI driver and it won't run on batter power (hangs shortly after loading XP).
Can anybody please help me with this? I am using the latest BIOS (version 1006) and have tried both Asus ACPI driver versions 1.0 and 4.0. Device manager says the the Computer type is "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" and the battery driver is "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery".
Please help!
Thanks!

Are you using the Version V4.00.0010 ACPI drivers?
Have you changed the RAM?
And is this Home or Professional version of XP? Power problems usually occur with the Professional version.

Hi zeo, thanks for your reply! In answer to your questions:
I am using the Version V4.00.0010 ACPI drivers.
I have changed the RAM to a Kingston 1GB 667 stick as the original ram had problems and failed memtest.
I am also running XP Professional SP3.
What do you think I should do?
Thanks!

Did you install the other drivers yet? And what order did you install them?
The known issue with XP Pro is switching to battery power while connected can crash the system but if you boot from battery you should be okay. Is this the case or does it always crash on battery?

Yes, I have installed the other drivers. I've tried re-installing XP Pro a few times and have experimented with changing the order of driver installation as I tried to determine which drivers caused the problem. I've tried Chipset drivers first, the ACPI, then VGA, Audio, Touchpad, Power Man, EEECap, Network, Wireless. I've also tried ACPI first, and ACPI last.
I do have the issue of XP Pro crashing when switching to battery power - I didn't know that was a known issue and am paritally relieved to know that it's not just me!
But, I also have the problem of booting from battery and ALWAYS crashing soon after the ACPI driver loads. If I uninstall the ACPI driver, the system boots fine.
Do most people run XP Home for this reason or is there another fix?
Thanks again.

It is a known problem but it's rare and I do not recall if anyone resolved the problem. Most just switched to either XP Home or Windows 2000, but you could try the Vista Fixed ACPI drivers to see if they resolve your issue.
You can also try reseating your RAM, the scrambled video is usually a timing issue with RAM. Since Eee PC's use shared video memory. . .
