I've got a 901 (White, 20GB Linux model, with XP Pro SP3 installed, no other modifications), and it is seriously my favorite thing I've ever had. Like, completely amazing - not only better than all my previous computational arrays, but better than all my other stuff, period. But, there is a problem: the damned LEDs. In the day, they're fine, but at night, which, being the nerd I am, I spend staring at a computer screen, they seem like miniature suns, blasting the flesh from my retinas. Since I have no use for them, and they are also problematic at night, I'd like to turn them off. Every other portable computron I've owned had hotkeys for that purpose, but, as you likely know, the 901 lacks such a convenience.
Of course, the simplest solution is to cover them with electrical tape, but there are drawbacks. For one, I can't stand stuff on my case (I even took off the stickers). For another, they do drain a bit of power, so why have the (however slightly) decreased battery life when I don't even wanna see the things?
I suppose I could just open the case and remove them, but I have zero desire to take the risk of screwing up and destroying my beloved Eee. So, is there a way to shut them off via software?
tl;dr: how do i shot led?

Im partially with you on that one i get headaches from flashing lights and i had trouble using the netbook at night.
My soloution to this used to be electrical tape but when the netbook got hot it used to loosen and eventually get sticky and manky
What i did in the end was get a very thin ended permanent marker and colour in the led status indicators. They still work but they are a lot darker so i can see them but they dont blind me at night anymore no sticky tape and no opening the device.
As far as battery life i couldnt really comment but i dont see them making a massive difference
Anyway hope that helped
Chris :-)
