9.10 and virtual desktop of 1024x768 (panning mode)

Hi there,

I have installed 9.10 and I was wondering how to enable a virtual resolution of 1024x768, or if you prefer panning mode.  With 9.04, I used this simple script :

Code:

xrandr --fb 1024x768 --output LVDS --mode 800x480 --panning 1024x768

I also edited (added the be precise) the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file to include virtual resolution :

Code:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    Device "Configured Video Device"
    SubSection "Display"
        Modes "800x480"
        Virtual 1024 768
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Unfortunately, this is not working in 9.04.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  It is probably the xorg.conf modifications that I have included that Ubuntu does not like much.  By default, xorg.conf does not exist, right ?

Actually, even in Ubuntu 9.10 there is an xorg.conf. If you're editing a blank file, odds are you created a new one. I used the same copy-paste for xorg.conf in Karmic as was recommended for Jaunty for the t91, but I don't have a clue what model eee you're using.

Hi, yep sorry I forgot to mention that I am on a 701 4G.

As you said I created the xorg.conf but I don't know if Ubuntu even takes it in consideration.  My point is if Ubuntu detect a fault in the configuration I added it might just ignore the file and rely exclusively on the default one.

Re: 9.10 and virtual desktop of 1024x768 (panning mode)

Oh Ubuntu will use you xorg.conf, but if you make any mistakes you could cause serious issues with your system (as usual with making changes to the filesystem). Not having the machine myself (the 701 4G), it would be helpful to know the specs. You should paste the outputs from lspci and lsusb and hopefully by recognizing the specs, it would be possible to google it and hopefully someone with the same screen (regardless of which laptop it's on) has figured out getting it to work in Karmic tongue

I think they took the panning mode out of Ubuntu 9.10.

Code:

xrandr --panning 1024x768

Does nothing.

Code:

xrandr --fb 1024x768 --output LVDS --mode 800x480 --panning 1024x768

Does make the screen bigger.  I mean, the mouse cursor will disappear from the side and bottom of the screen (the desktop is now 1024x768) but it will not pan (move the screen).  Gnome remains at 800x480.

I will try to look into that later but I believe I will have to get that 810pan hack (found in the wiki) back in business. What was that again ... 2 steps forward, 1 step backward ? /rant

Notice that since Ubuntu 9.10 LVDS output named "LVDS1"

Try

Code:

xrandr --fb 1024x768 --output LVDS1 --mode 800x480 --panning 1024x768
