The wiki suggests
sudo apt-get install alien
however, I'm getting the "Couldn't find package alien" reply. I assume it's not in the standard repositories.
I need a graphics program that reads my LX3 camera's .RW2 files to save as .jpg files on my EEE 701. Any that I can access via standard repos, or is there another way to get XnView?

I was able to install xnview on my Eee 900 with Xandros Easy. It opens via a terminal window. Not all functions work, but it is usable.
I didn't need alien--not even sure what it is.

Hi, Old Adam,
Uh, I'm clueless. What's Xandros Easy and where do I access it? If you mean the Add/Remove software, I've looked there and it doesn't show up for me.
I'm comfortable typing in xnview from the terminal. :->
Alien is a program that converts rpm packages to whatever Xandros uses; xnview is on its website as a Red Hat package.
Many thanks for your reply!

Hi philip
I suppose you use the normally default asus xandros.
The easy mode is just its simple desktop with the big icons.
This one: http://www.honeypothack.com/eee/
If you haven't installed the advanced desktop then you should see also
this one.
alien 8.52 you can find in the following repository:
deb http://www.geekconnection.org/ xandros4 main
alien 8.64 you can find here.
deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free
xnview 1.70-2 you can find also in the geekconnection repository above.
Greetings gringo

Unfortunately, file format conversion doesn't work in xnview on my Eee. I recommend that you install Imagemagic and then use the convert command in a terminal window to convertt your image files to jpg.
Basically, you'd do this: (1) Connect your camera and open Filemanager. (2) Copy your *.rw2 images to a directory on your Eee. (3) Open a terminal window (ctrl-alt-t) and change directories until you get into the one that has your *.rw2 images. (4) Type in a batch command to convert them--e.g. convert *.png *.jpg.
The only problem I see is that you may need to do some research to find out the correct command for your version of the raw image format. See http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php

Which wiki are you talking about? And what EeePC software version you have?
For my 701 4G, I don't need to install XnView thru alien. See: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php? … 78#p102678

Hi, guys,
Many thanks for all the helpful answers. I used to use the full desktop, but I found it was taking longer to boot than I cared to spend -- I use the EEE mostly on vacation for quick email and uploads to flickr. I know the easy mode isn't as manly, but I'm happy with the snappy boot. :-> Sorry for my confusion on what Xandros Easy is called. shrug - I forgot.
The wiki I refer to is right here at eeeuser.com: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ - if you haven't perused it, I recommend it highly.
If file conversion isn't working on xnview, then there's no reason to jump through hoops to get it. My only need for it is that it claims to open and convert the .rw2 files my Panasonic LX3 generates in RAW format. Bummer. ImageMagick, by the way, won't read RW2 and save as JPG, nor do digiKam and Picasa. The ability to convert RW2 files is my sole criterion. I need to have them as JPGs for flickr and email.
OldAdam, how did you install xnview? I'm curious if your installation included the libraries mentioned in the post at
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php? … 78#p102678
Could that be why it's not converting correctly? If so, I'll give that a try. I was hoping you had a simpler way to install it, but it doesn't seem to work well.
Again, thanks to all.

Why you don't try to install xnview from the repository I've written above?
I did a dummy-installation without any problems.

Current versions of xnview do read rw2 files. If the version(s) in the repository doesn't, you might want to try dcraw, a command line tool for converting raw images to either JPEG or TIFF. A lot of software that reads raw images is based on the work done by the author of this tool, so it often is (slightly) ahead in it's ability to read various formats.

gringo, I did the install, and entering xnview on the command line gives me the error while loading shared libraries. I'll go do the other download and symlink stuff.
LATER: Okay, did the symlink, and xnview runs fine. However, it says it doesn't know how to read Pnnnnn.RW2, where that's the file name for any of my RAW photos. :-\
It's v1.70 - is that the latest and greatest?

I think I did do the symlinks and so on--can't remember for sure. To be honest, if I ever want a full-featured version of xnview, I have (in the past), used in on a computer with Windows XP. I wonder if it runs perfectly in wine?

I only want something on my EEE so I can post JPGs to flickr while I'm on vacation. I use a Mac all other times, so I use Graphic Converter most of the time because it's fast to boot and use. I don't do art photos, just snapshots, so my needs are to convert to JPG, compress and downsize for easy Web uploads and downloads, and that's it.
I'm on the XnView BB asking for help there re: the .RW2 problem. Any tips here, though, will be gratefully accepted. This is a great place for help.

Maybe Holger has the lead you need. dcraw looks good.

Yeah, but it looks like I'd have to compile it, I whine.

When I go into synaptic, dcraw shows up as a package I can download. If you can't find it, maybe you need to modify your list of repositories.

Oops, there it is. Well, I'll wait and see what turns up from the board at XnView before I labor under the command line with dcraw.
Many thanks for your patience and help.

The people over at xnview's BB said to try xnviewMP, which is the latest version. Does anyone know where it's kept that the EEE can get hold of it without compiling?
Offline
There is no deb package so far because XnViewMP itself
seems to be new and just beta.
If you nevertheless want to try it then have a look here:
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p … 5928530864
But think about you've to compile it. ".tgz =.tar.gz"

May be you can use IrfanView with wine to do the conversion. Read this: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. … e=29880285
