Fool Windows into thinking that removal storage is a fixed disk?

Is it possible to fool Windows into seeing a removable-storage device as a fixed disk, perhaps via a reg tweak or utility? I want to install games onto my CF & USB devices, but many of them want some kind of fixed drive!

I have tried formatting the drives as NTFS, but to no avail.

MS Office 2003 went onto the CF no questions asked, for some reason games don't want to!

Yes - I am looking for a Windows equivalent of this.

The USB device itself decides if it is removable, and tells Windows to call the appropriate driver.  The Removable Media Bit is set at the factory.

All I've ever seen is a proof of concept on the subject:

In other words, we need a custom driver. sad

Works fine for me, my 4gb SDHC is now shown as a fixed disc.

Once you do that, is it safe to remove the SD card from your computer?
Can you remove the SD card then put it back without it messing anything up?

Re: Fool Windows into thinking that removal storage is a fixed disk?

qtom89, ive have used the method linked by mhthomas succesfully.

Removing the card does not pose any problem as long as you do a safe removal but it apears that the card will not be recognised directly if inserted again, in my case i had to reboot with the card in and then it worked again.

Im very sure that using safe removal is impossible if you have something using the card though so be sure to only have it as storage and for programs that will not be running (accessing it) when you try to remove it.
