Issues regarding Windows Printer, Advanced Desktop.

Hi everyone

From what I've read, I see that some people are having issues with this.

Currently I'm running on Advanced Desktop mode, using the manual modification of the .xinitrc file. However:

1) The printer can be picked up, via  My_Network/The_Computer_connected_to_the_printer_via_windows/name_of_printer
2) I can install the printer as well
3) I can't print anything from advanced desktop mode.
4) I -can- print from the simple mode if i remove / rename the .xinitrc file.

Can anyone provide some leads to this? I've tried to set up the printer via CUPS and the built in printer setup menu that the OS provides. Both end up as the same result: Install the printer fine, but cannot print.

It looks to me like you've answered your own question. It seems that the .xinitrc file prevents printing (and, IIRC USB / SD access).

As a solution, you might consider deleting the .xinitrc file and modifying the startsimple.sh and startfull.sh scripts (or install the package advanced-desktop-eeepc, which has the same effect). It seems to offer better functionality, although it is still not without quirks.

Re: Issues regarding Windows Printer, Advanced Desktop.

TBH, I was hoping that I wouldn't have to use the startsimple.sh and startfull.sh scripts. But if people are reporting that using those scripts can do printing.. I guess I won't mind daddling in there.
I actually can do hotswap of USB devices.. Anyway, I'll tinker away I guess.

Thanks.

It's worth a try. Just remember to back them up first (although I'm sure you knew that). Also, let us know what the result was.

Re: Issues regarding Windows Printer, Advanced Desktop.

I swear I posted last night.

I got it to work; thanks deadduck! Not only that --- USB /SD automount works as well.
So I guess we should edit out the .xinitrc method because the advanced-eeepc-desktop method works better and has less quirks eh?

I would like to remove it from the wiki because I think it only confuses people. However, many people (especially the type who, like me, read wikis) prefer to have the choice. So I'll put a warning in the wiki about the hiccups you experienced using the .xinitrc method.

Congrats on fixing your problem and enjoy your shiny, new advanced desktop!
