The BackTrack development crew added eeepc drivers to the latest BackTrack 3 beta.
Wifi injection works, and most amazingly....Compiz works out of the box with the USB version of bt3 beta..
check it out!

Wow, that's really sweet, how are the rest of the drivers for BackTrack? And does everything else seem to be functioning normally? I'm very interested in booting from USB, so keep us informed, thanks.

WOW!! I'm amazed at their expertise and abilities to have it work on the eeepc.
Love it!

I tried backtrack 3 on my eeepc and the wifi is recognized but It doesn't support monitor mode and kismet doesn't work with this card

thats pretty damn awesome. But brings up that ever important question:
How much space does this distro require on SSD once installed?
Offline
bt3 looks amazing on the eee, but it's most definitely still beta. amarok didn't work properly and konqueror was unstable. with some bug fixes it could be a good distro for the eee but it's not there yet. not sure if this is based on slax 6 or not but if it is we may not see a final version till feb when slax6 comes out.
to the above it takes about 900mb on usb so i guess the same on ssd. too bad about the wifi not supporting kismet etc .
Offline
Wifi injects, and kismet is supported.

I guess I actually have another question about this distro... I wonder if it limits the read/write to the drive to save the ssd. Not that if its not stock the lines couldn't be changed to do so.

This is very excitnig. What are the other changes you are seeing in BT3? I love BT2 and would also love to see their new release. Thoughts?
Offline
Well, we didn't specifically create BT3 for the eeepc, just made sure basic drivers were available.
Atheros was patched with the recent madwifi-ng HAL patch..so works natively with madwifi-ng ... and it injects.
I'm not too EEEPC savvy...just got mine a few days ago...any suggestions / bugfixes would be appreciated, and incorporated into BT3 final.

Great Muts. Didn't realize you were with the development team for BT. How long have you worked with them? I only ask because I have been using the product since before the merger that formed it.

This is fantastic! I think I know at least one distro that's going to be on my Eee! Using the full USB version, how much space does it take up once installed?
Offline
So the questions that are waiting to be answered are in order:
1.) How much does this distro take up on the SSD when installed not live?
2.) Is it set up to limit writes to help save the SSD or memory stick?
3.) What repositories does the distro use?

Don't know

Probably not. Easy enough to do yourself. Mount partitions with noatime in fstab, sudo echo 0 > /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

Backtrack is based on Slax. My knowledge of Slackware is old but as far as I know it does not do nice things like dependency management. I believe Slackware packages can be installed on Slax based distros.

Robin, you are correct.
Note that this is not a "Distro", but a live CD. Pakage management should MOSTLY be aligned with slackware 12, but not really planned for upgrades....yet. Repositories are planned for BackTrack 3 Final.
Since its a livecd /usb, fstab contains noatime entries.

Muts,
I'm using the BT3 on an XD card from a usb card reader ( a big and old story..).. anyway, it works, recognize the wifi and can connect to it but I'm not able to make kismet work ( I think it's kismet.conf trouble but I don't know how to configure ir correctly ) and I'm not able to put it in mode monitor too.. can you help me, please?...
Thanks
Edit...
Ok, I think I got it... (just only the kismet truoble).
Using kismet -c madwifi_g,wifi0,wifi0
But I'm still having trouble with the mode monitor... please help!
the signal detectition with that driver it's lower than normal, isn't it?

I'll crosspost this to the BT3 forum at Remote Exploit...
Just got the "real" install of BT3 working on the EEEPC's SSHD.
Initially i tried the USB version - took 3.4 of 3.6 GB available, and would not boot correctly (kept looking for the BT3 module directory). I thought I could probably solve that with a new initrd, but for some reason BT3 is missing the mkinitrd script.
Compiz worked well, except for some minor sync issues on startup, but I decided to revert to the CD version because of the space issue on my 4G EEE PC.
I installed the CD version to a SD chip, which went very well, although you need to run "bootinst.sh" from the /boot directory at the end to get SYSLINUX working with all the cool options. The CD version used ~740 meg of the 1G SD chip and ran and loaded fine.
Next I booted the EEE PC from the SD chip, and installed using the BT3 installer to the SSHD. I deleted the two stock linux partitions and made one larger one - it turned out to be 3.6G. There are two other Windows partitions on the HD, but I got the impression they are associated with the bios, so I didn't mess with them.
The automatic install from the CD-version on the SD chip went smoothly. It installed LILO with no initrd, and I had to add "noatime" to /etc/fstab. It used 2.8G of the of the 3.6G available - much better than the USB version.
Everything works - kismet didn't come up from the menus, but that's because the kismet.conf is not configured for the atheros device. I'm going to work on that shortly.
No problems with the atheros card - in fact it works better than it did under Xandros - and everything else seems to work properly as well. The "Konqueror issue" has to do (from what I saw) with how the SSHD works, not with Konqueror, and Amarok seems to work as well.
Although ACPI works, it seems to report the wrong times for battery life under KDE. I'm going to work on that as well.
Overall - I'm thrilled. This is what I really wanted the EEE PC to do. Next I'm going to put in an 8G SD chip and maybe install the USB version on that for comparison.

I am definitely going to use BackTrack 3 as my OS for my new EEE when I get it this x mas.
Just curious, is KDE default GUI? I don't like KDE. Is Gnome available as an option in the install (Probably not)?

Christmas has just come early!
I've got BT2 on USB but was a bit disappointed about the drivers not workwing. I saw the announcement about BT3 but have not yet had time to try out BT3. I'll install to USB and have a play, but I'll be thinking about how to install this as my permanent OS on the EEE. A cheap, compact PC bursting at teh seams with pen-test tools.
Thanks guys!

I am looking to install some video codec such as DIVX, xvid, MKV, and some others with BackTrack 3 BETA. This shouldn't be a problem right?
Also any idea when the stable version of BT3 will be out?

hrm, I'm having problems getting kismet to work as well... is anyone in the mood to do a total n00b guide to using Backtrack 3 on the EEE for cracking WEP's? I'd actually be willing to paypal them some money - I'm THAT desperate!!

Muts is one of the head developers for backtrack I think? ![]()
Nice to hear that you're using the eeePC as well muts - I guess this means that eeePC support will be a focus of the main project?
Exciting times ![]()

I used another computer, booted with the live cd
Ran the installer, selected Live
cleared the checkbox for restore original MBR
All seemed to go fine.
Shut down original pc, removed sd chip/card, installed into eee, hit escape at boot, selected card reader.
starts to boot, then gives the following error
* setup union directory (using aufs), with udba=none
mount: mounting aufs on union failed
Fatal error occurred - can't setup union (aufs)
* Something went wrong & we can't continue. This should never happen.
* Please reboot your computer with Ctrl+Alt+Delete . . .
The card is a 1 GB Kingston SD card
What have I done wrong?
What do I need to do to resolve the issue?
I downloaded both files from the website, both the ISO & the larger file
The ISO boots
BTW-First, I had also tried to copy the contents of the larger file to the card & following the instructions ran the ./bootinst.sh script file, file seemed to run fine, with no errors, yet would not boot, gave the message Boot error.
So I booted a pc with the cd & wiped the card, ran the installer which gets me to where I am now.
All help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Jeff

I followed this screencast of a bt2 install.
Just ignored the extra windows partition he talks about.
