I received eee pc today.
I am trying to connect to wireless network at my home (SSID: No spaces, WEP 128 bit). When I connect, I am getting an error ("NO DHCPOFFERS received" ; " No working leases in persistant database - sleeping)
I can connect to my work wireless with WEP. I tried with static configuration but still did not work. At the same time my other windows XP laptop can connect to internet using wireless connection so it does not appear to be a router problem.
I have read messages on this issue but I still could not fix this issue.
Can anyone help?

Yeah, I had this issue too. Did you install the wpa_supplicant too?
Offline
I am sorry, what is that? I am new to Linux.

you do not need wpasupplicant if you are using WEP only.
wpasupplicant is needed if you use WPA.
Often a problem like this is caused by a typo in the WEP key.
My eeepc connects using WEP without any problem (using DHCP).
I suggest to test first with WEP disabled at the router, to check if you then get an address. If not your dhcp server might be broken.
If yes, then either your key or association is wrong.

I am using WEP. I could easily connect to the network at work using WEP so I know there is something different with my home network. My other laptop (XP) works on the same wireless network at home. I am using SMC7004VWBR router that I bought about 4 years ago (802.11b). Do you think changing this router can help with this issue? Since other laptop and also my axim pda works on the wireless, I am assuming nothing wrong with dhcp server. Let me know if any more suggestions.
Thanks,

I only mentioned that because I started getting those errors after I installed the wpa_supplement drivers.

Hm. It could of course be that your router has run out of dhcp addresses or that you have configured it to only hand out addresses to known devices (with a known mac address). Then again I guess you would know.
BTW the latter can be checked easily by connecting the eeePC wired and seeing if you get a DHCP address in that case.
If you do, then my expectation is that one way or another you mistyped the WEP key (caps lock problem?)

ugh I have the same problem. I have no idea how to fix it.
I also got my pc today from directeron.

IDK if this would help but it seems there is no way around it because it deals with the os.

ugh I am starting to regret not doing the black friday early and getting a sony viao for 400 bucks : (

Thinking of it.
You do not have spaces in your WEP key, do you?

I also had this issue at a friend's house under Xandros, but booting with XP picked up the signal. Driver issue?

I had this problem earlier. Turns out to be because my router was set to not broadcast its SSID. As soon as I enabled broadcast, it all started working. It's a bit annoying having to leave it like that, but it's encrypted so no harm done I guess.

I am currently having the same problem - the odd thing is that it was working for a week or so then one day it didn't.
I have tried deleting the connections and setting it up again and it doesn't work - I keep getting the "no offers - sleeping" message.
I will try to connect directly to the router - brb - OK - no problem when jacked into the router.
will try to delete all networks and set up wireless . . .
nope - same error message that leaves the wireless connection status as 'pending'
very frustrating since it did work fine for a week or so - and nothing has changed with my router - other laptops connect fine as they previously did but my beautiful new eee just refuses to connect.
it sees the network at 100% - I am using wep encription but that hasn't changed either and I am sure that it is typed correctly and capslock is off.
any ideas????
thanks
Leonard
the exact message follows-

Today, I received my second eee (white) and as soon as I opened out of the box (while I was still working to resolve wireless connection issue on my black eee), I tried to connect my wireless network (I had removed WEP while troubleshooting with black eee) and it connected immediately without any issue. Then, I closed the white eee and opened again to check internet after several hours, and I started getting same "pending" message that I received on black eee. I have no idea how to fix this issue. I am afraid if my router (SMC7004VWBR) needs to be changed or something else.
Any idea?

If your WEP keys are not working, try using a hex key instead of a text string. I've had problems with this before - in one case, using the Windows wireleww management rather than the silly one bundled with the wireless card helped.
Maybe you can get your router to tell you what hex key it has encoded your text string to. See more details (briefly) here about differences in encodings from ASCII keys to hex keys, along with a link to a calculator (for one of the encodings, at least).
Offline
I second trying hex. Especially if your key has odd characters in it like space ! * ' "

I tried after removing encryption (WEP) and as I said earlier, it connected first time but stopped working during second attempt. My WEP did not have spaces or ! * ' "

I had sent this query to Asus support and here is their response.

What is different about your home connection? Is your router on our "qualified external device" list? http://dlsvr04.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/EeePC4G(701)/Qualified_list(Linux).rar

I could not open the link that he sent me.
Does anyone have a list of qualified routers?
Offline
I found a qualified list.
I do not know if eee pc can only connect to internet if router is in their qualified list. Does anyone know what is different about the routers in their qualified list?

At least you got a reply. I have waited 5 days with the same problem and ASUS tech support has not even answered. I think there is a fatal flaw in the wireless since so many people are having trouble with it. The wireless should connect to any router. If you travel like I do, you cannot change the wep key or change the router. You just need to connect like every other competent computer will do.
Sorry, I am frustrated with the otherwise nice eeepc. But I think this is a fatal flaw.

I get the same problem but it is intermittent. I have to make several attempts to logon to the router until it finally connects. This only started when the router was changed for another make. Unfortunately this is out of my control. I get a similar problem with a pc laptop running windows xp. That takes ages to log on to this new router but had no problems with the previous one. The interesting thing is that I have an ipod touch which connects in a second every time with no problems at all.

I've noticed the same problem using DHCP, when I changed the eee IP to static, problem goes away and I connect. I'm using an older D-link router b/g with WPA and no spaces. I think it's the DHCP time, when the laptop tries to reconnect, the router thinks it's already got the DHCP address, and the laptop doesn't get it again, but this is a guess.

This is certainly OS specific and not hardware. I can connect no issues at all at home, but I can not connect to any wireless Hotspots which kinda makes owning a ultra portable Eee pretty pointless if it doesn't connect to my preferred ISP on the road.
I think in the end if I want to be able to connect to other APs and not have any issues I will need to install XP which is not what I wanted to do, but since ASUS give you rubbish answers where they state "qualified external device" lists LMAO! ![]()

I noticed that the problem only started when the router was changed. I had no problem connecting to a BT Voyager router. I have now entered the settings manually and it connects OK every time. Maybe ASUS needs to issue an update for the atheros software.
Offline
I can connect with no issues at all to my WPA-TKIP at home. I have the default OS and no changes made to the software. At home it just works fine using WPA encryption. When I try to connect to a unsecured network (hotspot that my ISP provides) I get the
" NO DHCPOFFERS received "
Has anyone pin-pointed the main reason people are getting the connection issues, is it to do with DHCP? or is it the software that is at fault.
I would love a resolution to this issue as how ever fun it is to have my Eee connected to my home network I was intending on taking the Eee on holiday with me but since I cant connect to my preferred hot spots it makes it pointless as I have mentioned before and a lot less portable! ![]()
