Ubuntu eee 8.10

I heard that the 8.10 version was being released today.  Anyone tried it yet?  I am getting my eee pc 1000 soon, and am considering this as one of the operating systems.  I also heard that they are changing the name to something like Easy Peasy.  Horrible name, but I don't care as long as it works well and has decent repositories.  Then again I may just go for the full install, then tweak everything so it works myself.

By all accounts, the release date has been moved to 5/1/2009. See: http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/wiki/index.ph … _Peasy_1.0

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

Thanks for the update.  I was hoping they would have it for the first.  That way I could install it when I get my eee pc 1000.  Guess I will have to either install the 8.04 or use a different distro, or go for the full version of Ubuntu, then tweak it.  I am also interested in trying the remix.  It looks like a very nice and different interface for use with netbooks.  I like the idea of having something a little different than most people.  Makes me look like I am ahead of the curve lol!

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

Yeah, that may be what I end up with.  Looks like it will work.  I was interested in Ubuntu eee, but the more I look, I think eeebuntu may be a bit better for my purposes.  Any experience with it?  Will I need to do much tweaking to get things working?

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

Only had my 900a for a short time. I previously had ubuntu eee 8.04 and also tried XP which was too slow IMO. So far i quite like eeebuntu. I am totally new to linux and am still having a bit of trouble getting used to it but eeebuntu is my fave so far.

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

Doesn't look like it's going to be released today either.  There's an RC1 version for download, but it has a lot that needs to be fixed before it's ready for primetime.

On another note, I foresee some potential copyright issues with http://www.easypeasy.com in the choice of the new name and logo for the distro that may further delays its release (or may require subsequent rework to, once again, change the branding).

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

It is probably overloaded with people trying to download the iso.

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

I was able to download it and install it on a USB flash drive using Unetbootin.  However, I wasn't able to get WiFi to work -- seems to be an endemic problem with Ubuntu 8.10.  I had the same problem with Cruncheee.  With eeebuntu 2.0, I was able to get WiFi working sporadically.  Until that problem gets fixed, I'll be sticking with Ubuntu Eee 8.04, which connects flawlessly to WiFi both at home and elsewhere.

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

thanks artrafael.

i'm running the live version now on 900a and seems to be working fine. can't help to notice the new boot-up screen and the wallpaper on the desktop. I wish they had more time to finish up these little things. otherwise everything works fine: the wireless worked right away, has everything that the 8.04 had and performance wise seems a bit better. i tried running openoffice and firefox and both start up pretty quickly even in the live version. youtube and vimeo (!) worked fine, which was a surprise, since flash has a thing with linux systems.
ep seems to have everything that 8.10 has to offer with all the software that was included in the previous version with a slight difference: songbird is now also included in the pack, so, i got to try that out as well and I like it.

I'm thinking of installing it but i'll wait for a little bit to see other people's reaction.

But that letter is from easy.com, not easypeasy.com.  I'm not sure the latter has been dealt with yet.

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

it was the only thing I found on the subject....

just booted EP from my usb....
First impressions are ok. New bootup window looks ok, the loading bar looks a bit off (to the right....) but nice anyway. Loading time is a bit longer though, but maybe that is because I booted from my usb.
Background image could have been done nicer... looks like its made in paint....
I don't like the remix layout but that could be changed anyway....
Couldn't log to the internet so I don't know if wireless worked, all of them are protected around here... even the one I used to use got proteced in the last week....
I'll probably play a bit around with it later....

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

ok, first problems....
- on startup it keeps asking me for my password.... 'to perform administrative tasks'
- also it keeps trying to want to install itself..... Witch is pretty annoying...
- after instalation gives ubuntu loading screen?

+ it regonized my sd card right away
+ got the remix layout out of the way pretty easy, wich was nice smile

gonna plug it to the i-net now, see how it works then...

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

You have to disable something to get it to stop trying to install itself, I messed with that yesterday. Overall I like Easy Peasy but there are some things that are irritating me about it that I can't seem to get to work right. Also there really is no speed advantage in using it over my XP install.

I'll probably wait for gosCloud before I start dual booting regularly hmm

Re: Ubuntu eee 8.10

I installed Easy Peasy today on my eee 900 from an USB DVD-ROM. I did not run the live version first but opted to install directly.

The installation went fine.

After first restart I was asked to postinstall some program which gave an error message on samba. But connecting to my windows computers seem to work.

I have chosen automatic logon, but on every boot I am asked to give my password because I am going to go into system configuration. And then I am asked if I want to install. But I have installed. I run from the "disk" not from the DVD.

Fn2 does not work. No effect on the wireless.

After suspension the blue light for WiFi comes back on, but not the connection. It is unable to resume wireless after suspension to RAM, which alas makes the system unusable for me now.

I am going back to xandros again for now. Thanks to PING (http://ping.windowsdream.com/) it is very easy to try new distribution without having to tweak and upgrade and configure your working distribution once more.
