A simple way to install gtk 2.10 and firefox 3.0.1

Hi, although many people on the Internet has done Firefox 3 packages, but I still use a relatively simple way to packaging Firefox 3.0.1. Please download install_firefox.sh, and save on /home/user.

Next press alt + ctrl + t, and enter the following command:

    sudo bash install_firefox.sh

This script will start download firefox 3.0.1 and GTK 2.10, then install them.

PS. the gtk2.10 library come from http://apt.linex.org/linex/gtk-2.10/, i just pack them and create a mini local package pool.

So does this package replace Firefox 2.0 (i.e. upgrade it to 3.0.1)?

Thanks! That is an excellent set of packages and script! Makes using firefox 3 really easy.
You should consider adding info about to the wiki page;
http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:installfirefox3?s=firefox
As its far simpler and better integrated than the other methods listed there.

Re: A simple way to install gtk 2.10 and firefox 3.0.1

WooHoo!  This sweet little download has made it so easy to have the new Firefox 3.0.1 on your Eee.  Just follow the simple directions -- it removes unnecessary libraries and then tidies up after itself.  I could sit here and go on and on about a decent, clean installation, but I'm leaving that for each of y'all to see for yourselves.  big_smile

BTW, yurenju tosses in two extra addons for good measure.  Man, this thing downloaded so fine!

EDIT: LATER: Now that I've had some time to play with this, some details:  It downloaded with a default Tango theme -- nice, clean looking, a bit too big across the menu and location bars for me but that does not stop it from being nice.  The three addons are Quick Zoom 1.0.7 which enlarge and reduce text -- the function still controlled by the older Ctrl + and Ctrl -; the next is Tab Scope 0.2.2.8 which gives a thumbnail preview of the tab as you mouse-over it and finally one of my old favorites, MediaWrap 0.1.7.3.

As far as Plugins, it has the following:
Adobe Reader 7.0
DivX Browser
Java 1.5.0_10-b03
mplayer 3.31
Quick Time 6.0 / 7
RealPlayer 9
Shockwave Flash
Windows Media Player
so all-in-all a nice download (and I can not say what any other the other Firefox 3 packages have in them, not having seen them).  So, erm -- I reckon that's all.  smile

Re: A simple way to install gtk 2.10 and firefox 3.0.1

Does it work fine in 701? Yesterday I downloaded KMyMoney from Asus' eeeDownload site, which is supposed to contain packages specifically adapted for the eeePC... and I realised that they were talking about the 90x, because the screen was larger than my little 7" screen :-(

Before trying this package and thus remove my Firefox 2, can someone tell me if s/he has tried in a 701 (4G)? I would not like to risk to reinstall everything (FF2) from scratch afterwards...

Thanks!

Why don't you use the repository from lazyfai. Firefox 3 and ohter fine software are in this repo.

Re: A simple way to install gtk 2.10 and firefox 3.0.1

MY EEE WILL NOT SHUT DOWN

since installing this my 901 will not power down.

You just get a blank screen and the power lights stay on with the battery light flashing.

Please look back at my signature.  smile  Also note I did this on a clean install -- from F9 to finished, fully tweaked product, after saving all my previous settings.

EDIT:  BTW, if anyone has a problem remember this is a huge download, containing many MBs of data.  Maybe it's a good idea not to be in a hurry with it.

Re: A simple way to install gtk 2.10 and firefox 3.0.1

Well, I tried yesterday... and it did not work :-(

It downloaded everything, but then, during the installation, it stopped with an error related to libgtk. It said it cannot install it (more or less, the message was "you need library XXX, but it is NOT going to be installed"). That happenned for several packages, all of them related gtk (I think).
Normally, I would have gone one missing library after the other and install them, even forcing it somehow if need be, but in this case I am just too afraid of loosing the current installation of Firefox, or worse.

At the end, it just exited without having installed anything, or at least I think so (I run deborphan just after and told me nothing).

Any hint? If needed, I can rerun the installation tonight and post the exact messages. Just ask :-)

Thanks,
Manuel.

varquiel,

What model eeepc do you have? My 701 froze when I tried this. I am going to back-up today and try again.

Re: A simple way to install gtk 2.10 and firefox 3.0.1

Installed quickly on my 901. Firefox is working well (thank you!). I do have two problems though: 1) Sometimes the eee will not properly shutdown, screen goes blank and lights remain on (same as the person above) and 2) my instant keys no longer work.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

my instant keys no longer work.

Not quite sure what you mean by instant keys. If you mean house key + t to open terminal no longer works...these key combos do not work if you have switched to Advanced desktop; they only work in Easy Mode.

By "instant keys" i mean the ones above the Fn keys that turn the monitor off, toggle resolution, and performance. Also, this may be unrelated but I have noticed that my music manager wouldn't run without firefox open (I have amarok set through foxytunes).

Re: A simple way to install gtk 2.10 and firefox 3.0.1

Wonderful installation on 901 with no side-effects (touch wood). Many thanks.

On a related issue, I got the backspace key to work as a 'back' command- which was a bugbear. In
about:config
the browser.backspace_action is  set to 2 by default and setting to 0 seeems to have done the trick.

Cheers,

David.

Try using the command

sudo ./install_firefox.sh

from the directory in which you saved the file.
This is a common problem especially for people who come from an M$ background where the current directory is usually already in the PATH and we dont have to remember to state it
