WM6 Mandriva USB tethered works

I'm getting to like Mandriva more and more on the eee... So I decided that since I was going to keep Mandriva on the system I'd better give the synce usb-rndis lite stuff a go again to see if I could get internet sharing via USB working with my windows mobile 6 system.

I already have the development tools downloaded and a copy of the usb-rndis-lite stuff (see the main eee user wiki for details)
I ran the usual install steps (for mandriva you don't need to build the kernel) and was disappointed to see nothing happening when I tried to use the WM6 phone (a touch dual) in internet sharing mode, however post reboot the whole thing sprang into life straight away (I notice rndis appearing as a network driver during boot) and was auto-detected by the Mandriva networking stuff and I was happily online.

I would be interested to hear if others get the same experience.

Now all I need to sort out is getting suspend working right.

Peter

Re: WM6 Mandriva USB tethered works

That's good to hear.

I had the usb-rndis-lite version of the modules in the Mandriva kernel for a while, but switched back to the kernel.org version after it was updated to allow synchronization to work with WM5+ devices. However, as your message implies, the kernel.org modules still apparently don't work for tethering, and there's also an issue with some devices which can only be currently worked around using the usb-rndis-lite code plus a fairly dirty patch, so I'm evaluating whether we should switch back to the usb-rndis-lite code for 2009. It'll depend on what happens over the next month or two.

Re: WM6 Mandriva USB tethered works

Peter, can you do me a favour and test this kernel?

http://tmb.kkc.fi/Kernels/Cooker/i586/k … 2.i586.rpm

(or http://tmb.kkc.fi/Kernels/Cooker/x86_64 … x86_64.rpm for x86-64)

I think it should load okay on 2008.1. I'm trying to get the tethering patch into the Mandriva kernel for the future - that's a test build to see if it works. Can you give it a shot and let us know? Thanks.

Re: WM6 Mandriva USB tethered works

Well this message comes to you via a new kernel over WM6 using internet sharing over USB. I assume the wifi would need a trip to madwifi. My only complaint is that the rndis (along with ath0) device shows as [failed] during boot which is a pity, [pending] or something would be nicer.

The experience otherwise is like the build of usb-rndis-lite I did myself. (at least with mandriva I didn't have to build the kernel first)

Re: WM6 Mandriva USB tethered works

Excellent, thanks for the test. So we'll probably have this in 2009, and I'll even see if we could backport it to 2008.1 via updates, not sure about that though.

I wish my test device had a data connection so I could test this myself. Or - hmm - I wonder if it would work just sharing a wi-fi connection from the phone...

Re: WM6 Mandriva USB tethered works

Peter, can you please test the latest Cooker kernel, 2.6.26.1-1mnb ? I got a patch added that fixes synce support for several devices, but I'm worried it may have somehow broken tethering support (one report I got seems to indicate this is the case). Can you please try it and let me know? Thanks.
