As the happy owner of a Asus Eee 1000H black with XP, I have just one problem with it. On initial bootup I noticed that dread problem of purchasing a pre-built piece of computer hardware, lots of software that I neither want nor need.
I had a quick look on the support DVD and noticed a ghost image (which no doubt is XP AND all the useless rubbish), and a couple of I386 folders.
Now my question is, from the contents of the support DVD (mainly from the either of the two i386 folders) is it possible to get a XP only boot CD/USB that will install XP SP3 and nothing more?

The ghost restore is actually tuned for the limited space of the Eee. My XP restore DVD is for the 4G and it does install a lot of **** software that I must manually remove after each restore but on the other hand it is tuned up whereas:
-system restore is disabled
-paging file/virtual memory is set to 0mb
-Asus autorun OS cleaner is installed
-Microsoft Works (MS Office substitute) is installed
all this occupies a little over 1 gb of hard drive space.
the i386 folders are mainly supporting windows files and drivers not the operating system install software
you could use symantec ghost to explore the recovery image within the recovery folder and remove the unwanted files from the ghost image then save the image for future restore. You might get error if you use the Asus recovery suite to restore your altered ghost image...if so you, boot using ghost and restore the image in the dos environment.
The restore does install a lot of extras that I manually remove like Windows live components. There is a program called 'XPlite' that is used after XP is installed to remove all the extra windows junk apps and services...easier and safer than 'nlite'. Last time I checked XPlite is only compatible with SP2.
Search around or let me know if I can help...I just might have a link for XPlite and a portable version of ghost layin' around here somewhere...

You might want to try the following to make an empty XP Home SP3 installation CD from the contents of the restore DVD.
No guarantee for success though.
1. Copy the folder and the contents of \i386xp from the ASUS restore DVD to your harddisk. Rename the folder to \i386.
2. Retrieve the following files from your original EEEPC XP installation on your EEEPC SD disk:
OEMBIOS.BIN
OEMBIOS.CAT
OEMBIOS.DAT
OEMBIOS.SIG
OOBEINFO.INI
3. Find the serial number of your original EEEPC XP installation.
Either on the EEEPC sticker underneath the PC or with the Jelly Bean keyfinder.
4. Add the following line with your valid serial number:
[Version]
ProductKey="XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX"
Inside the file:
OOBEINFO.INI
5. Compress the following files with the DOS command MAKECAB:
OEMBIOS.BIN
OEMBIOS.CAT
OEMBIOS.DAT
OEMBIOS.SIG
OOBEINFO.INI
To these file names:
OEMBIOS.BI_
OEMBIOS.CA_
OEMBIOS.DA_
OEMBIOS.SI_
OOBEINFO.IN_
6. Copy these files to the directory \i386 - overwriting the existing ones.
7. Create the following files with a text editor and put them in the root directory above \i386:
WIN51
WIN51IC
WIN51IC.SP2
The contents of these files should have the following with an extra space after the word:
Windows
8. Include a WINNT.SIF file in the folder \i386 for an unattended installation, or without this file,
enter your valid XP serial number during the new XP installation.
9. Optionally, integrate Windows XP servicepack 3 with the following DOS command:
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU /integrate:D:\XPCD
Where D:\XPCD is the directory where you have saved the folder \i386.
10. With Nlite, integrate the streamlined EEEPC drivers by DevCorvin and burn the finished XP CD.

Interesting, I shall give it a try over the weekend.
