EEE 900 16G new version?

Excaliber PC has 16G 900 versions for $399 (linux)...is this a new model coming out?
http://www.excaliberpc.com/587715/asus- … 0-16g.html

the XP 16G versions cost $449

Are they just getting rid of the faster 4g SSDs and using the 16g SSDs in the 900s now for cheaper?

It seems like a good deal since it is still $550 for the current eee 900s with only 12g and 20g.
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php? … 69#p306969

New findings from mellz
EEE 900 16G XP - $399 http://www.mobileadvance.com/product.ph … amp;page=1

So if you want the XP 16G buy it from mobile advance for $399, if you want the linux for $399 buy it at amazon, excaliberpc

That certainly is a interesting possibility, since it's not apparent Asus has changed anything else in these new 900s to account for price reductions of this magnitude.

Exactly.  Usually the various tech sites jump all over any rumors about the eee PC.  In this case, at least two U.S. companies have posted detailed specs and prices on these 16G models and there's not a peep from any of the tech sites.  Reaction to this news is pretty light here (eeeuser.com forums) as well.  Perhaps many people (including the tech site writers) already have taken off for the extended U.S. holiday weekend?

maybe so...and I guess they forgot to bring their mini notebooks with them? I thought a lot of the people on these forums were from the UK though....or I guess we're the only ones who think this is newsworthy haha..

Re: EEE 900 16G new version?

Well, lookie here on Asus' very own global website product page for the 900:  http://eeepc.asus.com/global/900.htm

Here's the relevant part (emphasis mine, in italics):

S.S.D. Storage (Solid-State Drive)

12GB (4GB built-in + 8GB flash) SSD (Genuine Microsoft Windows OS Version)
20GB (4GB built-in +16GB flash) SSD (GNU Linux OS Version)
16GB flash SSD (Genuine Microsoft Windows & GNU Linux OS Version)

This confirms the 16GB 900 is a bona fide product.  Since this is on their global website, it's not U.S.-only product, even though they've only been spotted on a couple U.S. vendor sites so far.

Re: EEE 900 16G new version?

nice find.  It's weird how this article from the UK says that the eee 900 is at the end of its life?
http://channel.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=14194  I'm not sure what they meant by putting end of life...  the eee 900 16gs seem to be bringing new life...

I also noticed from that website that there is a purple eee pc 900?

Hmm... for all the Prince fans? smile  That would be a completely new color for the eee PC since not even the 901 has a purple version.  I'll have to see a high-res photo of it before I can say if it looks good or not.  I think the Acer Aspire One in Sapphire Blue is stunning.

But with all those users annoyed about how slow is the 16GB, who wants to buy an eee that is totally based on this? even if cheaper!

We don't really know that at this point.  It's just conjecture as to what changes Asus may have made to allow them to reduce the price.  We need one of the tech sites to get their hands on one of these babies and open up the case to see what's actually inside! smile

I wonder why it has the same name and not some weird 909 or whatever.

Or could they have upped the 4GB on-board to 16GB?  Is that possible?

I doubt it...it wouldn't be that cheap!  remember the 8 gb eee was like $500!

As usual, www.blogeee.net managed to snag early photos of this new model.  Here's one of the photos from there.  The new color wouldn't be so bad if they had just left off the floral pattern.

The Asus website (URL in previous post) lists the 900's colors as "Shiny Black, Shiny White, Purple"; hopefully, the 16G will be available in all these colors and not just the purple floral (i.e., the white and black models are not just for the older 900s).

Re: EEE 900 16G new version?

Why does the 12Gb XP cost $100 more than the 16Gb?!  Seems a little backwards.  I just bought the 12 a few days ago and I wish I would have known this was available when I purchased!

Come to think of it, both Excaliber PC and Portable One show the 16G as being available in the black and white models, so all is well.

Re: EEE 900 16G new version?

The 16 GB version is tempting I need a new portable device, my current laptop is no longer portable and is not worth replacing the battery.  I don't need anything fancy.  I do most of my work in the office.  Something that runs  openoffice, email, a text editor for html  and php code, gimp for simple graphic changes, and xampp.

It sounds like the eee can do that all those things.  I have  been debating between the 900 and the 901.  I was leaning  to the 901 for the battery life but now that the 900 is available for $399.  I'm back to square one with my decision.  The question being is an extra $200 worth the extra battery life.  What are some of you getting for battery life on your 900?

Thanks,

Fr. Robert

If y'all haven't seen this thread, check it out: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=34696

Amazon is selling the 900 16G now. The odd thing is, it lists the XP model with a Celeron processor and the Linux version as having the Atom processor.

Re: EEE 900 16G new version?

I just bought the newer 16g xp model last night from mobile advance through amazon and it said both the xp and linux versions came had the intel Atom processor. They changed the xp version this morning but my order form still says Intel Atom for the xp version.

Hehe.... I hope you're not counting on it coming with an Atom CPU just because the order form says so! smile

Could you possibly do some speedtests and post in this thread when you get it?  I just bought a more expensive 12Gb XP, and I'm thinking about selling it and getting this cheaper version.  The only thing I am worried about is the SSDs in the cheaper model are slower.

False advertisement = lots of money/settlement in my feild of work. wink
Unless they have some fine print stating either/or.

It'd be nice if they take initiative and compensate any customers with an equivaltent/better "atom based" model.

It pays for them to have accurate information before posting.
