I've reinstalled all add-ons and Flashplayer and FF is fine... bit slow sometimes but working.
It didn't work for me: Firefox always crashes, when I visit web pages with flash content. I've tried all the tips I've found in this thread, but none of them worked:
1) symlinking the system-wide plugin directory;
2) getting the latest version of flash from the website, and copying the .so file
3) as 2), but with the version 10 (beta) of the flash.![]()
PS: I'm running the stable release of Firefox

I've converted this thread into a wiki entry:

Please feel free to add/update it if I've got anything wrong (but it all worked fine for me - except the Easy mode stuff I didn't try that, and I haven't checked out gettinf Flash to play yet either)
Thanks guys!

Cool thanks. I've just installed it and it looks great.
*Update : looks like everything worked fine until I rebooted my eeepc. Now it seems that it cannot remember any settings and prompt me the Licensing Agreement as if it was the first time I used it.
Same problem with my Firefox 2 too.

Are you getting this if you consistently use one or the other?
I am getting the same if I switch between using FF2 and FF3, each time I change they both go to the initial 'Firefox installed' page, and I get the licensing agreement thing. If I stick to using one of them though, it remembers, and doesn't go back to the agreement.
Does anyone know what's going on with this please? I suspect some common file that both versions are using and getting confused into thinking it is the first time they have been run.

@eddy2099, @skaroth: does your Flash Plugin work? My Firefox still freezes, when I'm trying to load a Flash Animation. ![]()
I've tried also:
mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla_old
to let Firefox create a new configuration folder: sometimes it works, sometimes not.

It looks like what happened was that my prefs.js and localstore.rdf were corrupted. I am not sure if it was because I ran both versions of firefox at the same time or because I had both installed.
In any case, I've removed the firefox 3 and I deleted both the files (prefs.js and localstore.rdf) which were hidden under /home/.mozilla/firefox/<>.default and it seems to work again.
For the time being, I am sticking back to firefox 2. I am a novice at Linux and I will keep what works until the official update for firefox 3 is made available in synaptic.
@notoriousxl : I've tried the youtube and it does seems to work. It did not work the first time around and all I saw was this big red dot. I had to close and open a few times before it started working.

Flash animation from www.homestarrunner.com is working fine for me- I just copied the libflashplayer.so file from the existing Firefox 2 to the firefox 3 plugins directory.
Have you some others that don't work for you that I can try?
Still getting the 'Mozilla Firefox Start Page' coming up when I switch between FF2 and FF3 but not if I stick to one or the other - don't get the License Agreement dialogue up either for some reason!

Many thanks for the wiki. I was planning to wait until the weekend to read all the FireFox 3 posts and map out a plan. But you've done it for me, and it worked perfectly on the first try (other than a couple of my fat-finger moments). I modified my Taskbar icon (running Advanced Desktop) to point to my new FireFox installation, and it works great.
I'm assuming that now I can remove my FireFox 2 directory and all will be fine, though I realize it will still be there on the restore partition. I'm a little afraid to use apt-get remove, though. Will that remove any dependencies required by FF3? I need to do a little research there, looks like.
Anyhow, this forum is truly amazing! Thank you!

You're welcome, glad it worked!
Regarding the removal of Firefox 2, I don't know, I haven't tried it myself, and you'll be better with a Brainy Linux-head on here to advise - I'm just documenting what others have already worked out I'm afraid!
Please feel free to update the wiki with your findings though!

I would think the right thing to do is to stick with one. If you have two and switch between them, you may get Firefox confused since both share the same profiles and it appears that the prefs.js files are written each time you start it up or something.
By the way, I noticed that the original Firefox 2 was installed as 'root' and then with your wiki, I am installing it as 'user'. Does it actually make a difference ? . Could I install the 'gtk-2' into /opt as 'root' too ?
Thank you pretty much for your help.

Just an update.
I've deleted the old Firefox 2 from /opt and installed the Firefox 3 as documented by Clevin and it worked great. I could reboot it and everything works as it should.
My conclusion is that the firefox 2 and firefox 3 cannot work side by side.

Anyone else having their bookmarks being deleted upon restarting firefox 3?

sorry to say but Firefox 3 is a absolute memory hog.
Using 41 mB memory with blank page, IE7 only 16 mB with blank page...go figure

Well on Linux there is not much choice for good web browsers around. Of course on Windows, you can choose between firefox and IE7.

is /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libclearlooks.so readable by user? even if so, don't you want to store default permissions, of this file?![]()

I tried
prog "Firefox" /opt/xandros/share/AsusLauncher/firefox_icon.png /home/user/.firefox/ firefox
I am just laughing right now. I tried the linkies suggested.
I modified for my installation... I overwrote /opt/firefox rather than store stuff in /home/user because I was following someone else's instructions for installation.
I installed gtk in /opt because it seems the correct place.
AND after making the links, my poor little EEE shows the Starting Up screen, does several interesting gymnastic pirouettes through the dark screens, lighting various LEDs, and then, it crashes back to powered-off.
Time to reinstall :)
I'll be more cautious with where I put new installations next time; I hate leaving stuff hanging out in /home/user but I can certainly make a similar safe place.

What happened with the question about printing. FF3 works perfectly for me except there are no network printers listed when the File->Print is selected. Printing works fine in other applications. I have also tried to print a test page using the CPUS web admin page provided at http://localhost:631/ but it doesn't work either. I suspect that this is related to the FF3 printing problem as well.
Printing works great in my default FF2 instance.
Info for both printer definitions (the same printer defined with 2 different names) are present in about:config using the "cups" filter.
Anyone with any bright ideas or suggestions?????
Also, I have discovered that the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) plugin is missing. JRE is installed and available in FF2. I haven't looked closely but suspect something should be copied into /home/user/.firefox/plugins (the install directory for FF3) from the old FF2 plugin directory.
However, if anyone can confirm that??????
[UPDATE re jre issue]
The following assumes that FF3 is fully installed according to the instructions defined earlier in this thread, and operational (with the possible exception of printing.)
To add the java plugin to FF3:
1. open a console window (Ctl + Alt + t)
2. enter: pwd (response shoule be "/home/user"
3. enter: cd .mozilla/plugins
4. enter: ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
5. confirm success by entering: ls -a and checking for the link.
Be careful to make sure you get it right on the small eee keyboard ![]()
This should link your existing java installation with FF3. To confirm, start FF3 and enter "about:plugins" in the address bar. You should get information about all the plugins installed (including the jre plugin just linked to.)
Test your jre plugin by going here:
http://www.javatester.org/version.html
Works for me! Good luck.

I copied /opt/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so to firefox/plugins/ works fine so far..
PS. firefox 3 zoom out/in flash video as well...
Cannot get Firefox 3 to zoom video from bbc iplayer. It zooms the text (zoom text only box is NOT set) but the flash image is still the same size. I've downloaded the latest tar.gz of libflashplayer.so and copied it to the correct place but still does nothing.
Am I missing something or is the zoom being talked about just using full screen or is it zooming using the CTRl +/- keys ?
