Anyone get rosegarden working?

I'm trying to get rosegarden working without compiling from scratch. I doubt I'd have much space for anything else with all the dev tools installed. I did find this xandros binary for it (http://www.geekconnection.org/downloads.htm), and it does install, but it lacks something called 'liblo'. I haven't been able to check the repositories for it yet. I can't seem to connect to the archlug server, and I get this for the other one:

Failed to fetch http://www.archlug.org/apt/dists/xandros4/Release.gpg  Temporary failure resolving 'www.archlug.org'
Reading package lists... Done
W: GPG error: http://xnv4.xandros.com etch Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY A3CCB76FA8BCF0C9

Any thoughts?

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

Okay. I got it running. Sort of. No sound yet, but we'll see if that can't be solved. First add geekconnection and debian repositories to your sources.list, then run apt-get update.

First, do

sudo apt-get install dssi rosegarden-1.5.0

Next, install liblo, libjack, libfftw3, and liblrdf
sudo apt-get install fftw3 libjack0.80.0-0 liblo0 lliblrdf0

Once you have that, rosegarden should be good to go. However, it looks like the libjack version is incompatible with jackd. I don't know yet how to grab an older version from apt. Until that's installed, you won't be able to get any sound out of it.

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

I would really like to have a notation editor like rosegarden working on the eeepc. But what is the difference between rosegarden, rosegarden 1.5, rosegarden2 and rosegarden4?

Also, will this installation changes the default sound engine of the eeepc from oss to Jack? I don't want to mess around with Jack when I am just listening to songs for fun - Jack is so difficult to configure!

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

Just a sugjestion from my experience on other platforms, I recommend timidity for midi sound, easier to set up and doesn't intefere with corrent sound settings... (I haven't got around to doing this yet, but I run Rosegarden with Timidity on another Linux platform and it works very well)

I use Fluidsynth for Rosegarden on my desktop. I think it is just a matter of choice for the softsynth one prefer. But Rosegarden needs JACK.

Quoted from the FAQ of Rosegarden:

"If you have (or build with) ALSA but not JACK, you will be able to send and receive MIDI to or from outboard MIDI hardware and other MIDI applications such as soft synths, but you will not be able to use synth plugins in Rosegarden, nor to record or play back audio segments or apply effects plugins."

One thing I am not sure is because I use Rosegarden4 on my desktop which is not only a notation editor, but also a sequencer. Is Rosegarden 1.5 just a notation editor? Can it run without JACK?

How's everyone getting on with this? What do you reckon the best combo is for the eee?

No progress. Can't make it sound.

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

Does the midi work.
I need a small midi sequencer for live work, and the Eee is perfect.

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

I had to remove the depositories at archlug and xnv4.xandros before I could install anything.  Both apt-get and Synaptic choked and refused to do anything until I did.

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

I could not get Rosegarden working properly, it seems to want to completely upgrade many kde libraries and elements when attempting to install it, and not making these upgrades means it will not work.

On the other hand I have used lmms perfectly OK, it works a treat smile

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

Hi there,
I sent meep a private message, but figured that perhaps others could use the info as well:
I'm a total Linux beginner - went through the steps in the guide to adding Xandros repositories and pinning without a problem, and downloaded/installed LMMS (I figured since people who know what they are doing couldn't get rosegarden working, I didn't have a chance). When I launch LMMS, however, it brings up the startup image (of the music-note fella), then freezes my eee, and I have to power off and on again. Can't get it to run at all. Is there something else I need to install/update/some other thing?
Thanks.

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

I've just managed to successfully install LMMS and get it to work with my USB MIDI keyboard. I'm so glad! Since I'm a music teacher, it has helped reduce my baggage burden. If you still need some help, I can try to chip in what I know and have experienced.

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

Wow, pardon this late reply. I've been busy trying to set up two businesses. ^_^

I'll dig back into my notes (if any) and also double-check what I've set up thus far to be sure that things are all 100% working. Hope to post something up in a day or two.

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

I can't seem to find my notes when I did the setup, trying to get my midi keyboard to work with the EEE. In the end, what worked was LMMS (which still does) and the Timidity server.

After following the instructions for adding and pinning repos, have you tried doing:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-cache search lmms

And see what packages turn up? I'm not on my Eee now so I can't do a precise guide. If it's not far off, you probably can do

sudo apt-get install lmms

And there might be a couple of tweaks after that. If you've already made some attempt at installing the lmms packages, and you still can't launch, maybe you can describe the error or the situation and that might kickstart some memory in my head on how I solved it.

Hope I can help... LMMS definitely works.

Re: Anyone get rosegarden working?

I believe LMMS can do the job for you. I got that running on top of a standard Xandros. I also added vkeykb for a virtual keyboard.

Something that got me stumped for a while was getting the ALSA Sequencer part to work. In the end, this was how I worked it:

Run in terminal
1) sudo modprobe snd-seq-midi
2) vkeykb
3) lmms
4) set up an instrument track in lmms and then set the midi input of that track to the virtual keyboard
