Keyboard is acting wacky -- repair or replace?

I have an 8G and I like it.  It's not perfect but it is really fun and almost everything works under FreeBSD.

Just the other day, though, I noticed that I was unable to type : any longer.  This makes browsing the web a little problematic, as you can imagine.

Further examination shows that a number of keys in that vicinity do not work when shifted, but all the keys work unshifted.

Is this something I can fix myself?  Do I need to send it back to the manufacturer or the folks who sold it to me?  Help!  Thanks!

Try unplugging the keyboard and refitting it - have a look at the wiki or search for the modders guide for instructions if you dont know how to undoo it big_smile That may well solve yourt problem.

Re: Keyboard is acting wacky -- repair or replace?

It was easier than I thought to remove the keyboard, but that doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.

Any other suggestions?  I'm also using canned air in the hopes of blowing loose any crud that's in the way -- but that doesn't seem to be the problem since ; works but shift-; doesn't...

Re: Keyboard is acting wacky -- repair or replace?

Errrmmm...

This may be a dumb question but do you have
the same symptom with BOTH shift keys (left & right)

This will tell you whether the problem is key-specific
or conductor / connector specific.

Have you modded your 8G?

I had a wierd kbd problem after adding an internal
32 Gig USB card. All my Function keys were shifted one key
to the left! I needed to press F1 to get F2 etc...
I discovered that the  kbd interface seems to be VERY sensitive
to stray leakage resistances. It seemed that the sticky side
of the tape I was using to stick the USB card on the lower side of
the board was just enough to get the kbd confused.
Moving the internal USB card somewhere else on the mainboard solved
the problem.

I would put my money on the ribbon connector.
You could try:

blowing out the connector socket with compressed air

spraying contact cleaner into the socket
    - Be CAREFUL here. You will need to wait until the contact cleaner
has fully evaporated before switching on the eee PC or it will
either not boot or do VERY strange things
    - If you are not sure whether the contact cleaner you are using is ok
for the plastic components, squirt some onto a Q-tip and rub
this on one corner of the plastic retainer on thekbd socket. Wait until it evaporates
& see if the plastic has become soft. If so, then use a different cleaner!!

DO NOT SPRAY ANY CLEANER ON/INTO THE KBD
     - Almost any type of liquid will probably destroy your keyboard completely
     - This is bitter personal knowledge. My last laptop endured 2 full cups of coffee
and two glasses of water (just pull it apart, drown in contact cleaner & let it dry)
but I always had to replace the keyboard.....

Use a pencil eraser (a soft one as used by graphic artists) to
clean the metal strips on the ribbon cable
Be VERY gentle 'cos the connection strips are easily damaged

Good luck...

Re: Keyboard is acting wacky -- repair or replace?

I am experiencing the same problem == it is sporadic and different keys are affected, such as today the shift keys, but not now. Other times I can't type period, or it is a slow response.

My USB ports are also going out intermittently. Though I'm semi-tech savvy I do not wish to pull this apart -- especially if it voids the warranty.

My main PC is down/needs replaced (albeit my Asus has become my main PC) and I'm depending on this for my profession as a writer. I've done the compressed air bit. Do I have any other options than to call Asus?

Thanks!

P.S. Should I uninstall tweekeee would that matter?

Re: Keyboard is acting wacky -- repair or replace?

Try the reset trick:
Disconnect AC Power
Pull Battery Out
Hold Power Button for 15 seconds or more.
Reconnect Power.

I dunno if it will help you but it fixes the problem people have with keys shifting over one position and some keys not working.

Re: Keyboard is acting wacky -- repair or replace?

Had the same problem ( the eee managed to get wet , actually just short of drowning ) and was just about to buy a replacement keyboard when I thought it can´t get any worse if I try the drastic solution of completely pulling the keyboard apart and seeing if I can fix it somehow.
Anyway, after pulling every key off and very carefully prying all the key springs off ( three differnt sizes in all ), removing the rubber/ plastic matting , you are left with the circuit panel. This folds on the left side. Carefully unfold it and wash it with distilled water, leave it in the sun to dry thoroughly and then reassemble everything carefully. Everything works great again and I saved myself a bit of money ( sorry about that JD )
I am sure this is not for everyone but if you are thinking about anyway buying a new keyboard, then give it a go, you have nothing to loose except a bit of time.

Re: Keyboard is acting wacky -- repair or replace?

Thanks for the info...the keys seem OK now -- but will keep this for reference. 2 USB ports did go out though...I emailed support, no response, so guess I'll give them a call.
