Also the same in DEVICE MANAGER under IMAGING DEVICES and works brilliantly in Messenger live too.

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

WOW !
Just got my new EEEPC yesterday and after alot of searching about i setlled for your tutorial, and i gotta say THANKS. I cant believe someone goes to this sort of effort just to help others !
Followed it right thru and left a couple more bits to suit me. I Now have a 4gb EEEPC with 1GB DDR and with XP , IE7 , SP3 beta, office 2003 Full, Messenger Live 8.1 , Quicktime 7.4 , Full Sync with outlook for my Palm Treo 680 , AVG anti virus   and i still have 1.51GB left.
An 8GB SDHC sandisk finishes it off nicely with my docs and temp files move to here permanently .

Thanks mate .

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

When it comes to the modem problem. I've had my own set of problems. I ran into the problem where it didn't recognize what a modem was. So then I redid the same exact nlite config, with modem support. And ran a repair install to hopefully fix the problem without having to reinstall everything and resetup everything all over again. Well, now it recognizes the fact that modems exist, and it recognizes my novatel modem. But when I try to install drivers, it tells me that it "CAn't install your modem." or something to that affect. I'm really getting stumped so I created another cd with a few more things enabled (like all hardware supported), but for whatever reason this cd won't let me do a repair install from it. And I'm not going to reformat (again) to get this working. I am considering running sp2 on top of itself, and maybe..just maybe fixing my problem. If that fails, I think I might just do a repair install with my original xp disc with sp2 on it... I'd really rather not. But I need to get my modem working. I just can't find anything that even remotely points to why windows wouldn't install a modem. This sucks.

If anyone has any ideas please post, or contact me and we can work through it together.

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

Well in the end I had to make a new CD to fix my problem and just reinstalled everything fresh. I only got rid of what I absolutely knew wouldn't be used to install the modem. Most of the network options, I left in the install. My best guess was something under there that I was deleting was causing a problem. But I really couldn't verify that. Anyway, in the end I ended up with a slightly slower booting system taking up 512 megs of space for just my windows install. After I added a very nice package of software I topped out at 1.31 gigs. Oh, and my modem works. smile I'm glad I can finally start using my eee the way I was hoping to use it. smile

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

If you have a CD ready just insert in your external w/eee off. Read the xp install guide in your eee user guide p 5-3. Follow it exactly. There are a lot of topics on this subject good luck.

Have you removed the installer files and back-up files left by the update?

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

A good point regarding different nlite distributions.
Is it legal to post ISO images of EEEPC customised XP Pro CD's without the CD keys integrated?
As far as I know, you can now download Vista distribution DVD's as ISO's without keys from Microsoft so why not XP CD's?

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

Didn't work for me, using a USB cd drive it starting booting from it, then errored unable to find the nt bootloader.  I did deviate from the list in the guide so I've obviously done something wrong.

The copy I made did work however, tested it by installing on a vmware machine.
Also tested the full unaltered windows xp on the EEE and that worked, so somewhere in my nLite setup I've removed something vital to the install process.

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

Hi all,

Great forum!

I have an issue - I have followed the ISO creation step by step and burned ok to disc (using nero and the default burner on my laptop).
When I try to boot the disc it enters DOS mode but bombs out with driver not found MSCD001.

What the hell is this idiot doing??? sad

Or not??!!!

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

4G EEEpc

Hi, im a new w/ 3epc.. ive followed ur instructions on installing xp w/ nlite tool (ver. 1.4.5 beta 2).. after making the bootable ISO and install it to my m/c... after the installer changed to NTFS and format my drive, then copy the setup files... my computer restarted.. but on boot up, it gave me an error "NTLDR is missing".
I tried using my full version of windows XP, however it will give me the same result...
I have used my full version XP installer to another m/c, and it works well..
so ive checked my BIOS.. aparently under advance theres a setting for OS installation which can be put to finished/start.. does this have any effect?? (ive tried on both settings tho, but with same results)
how do i get about with the "NTLDR is missing" error message and what did i do wrong to correct my next installation??

_________________________
another observation is, if the m/c is off and shutdown, then you attached anything to the USB port like a cooling pad or ext USB HDD, it gives out power.. i dnt know if this is how it is with 3epc cuz as for my other laptop, or desktop, it does not give that reaction.. if you guys can give me info with this, it will be much appreciated.. tnx..

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

Hi, I'm new...and after 3 days, I finally got XP installed on my 8G! w00t!

Just like to add a note, that if you use an USB thumb drive (using the method outlined in the wiki), DO NOT remove the Manual Install and Upgrade option under Operating System. I removed it according to OP's method listed on the wiki, and gets a "SESSION3_INITIALIZATION_FAILED" (0x6F) error every time when trying to initiate windows installation (the part where you partition your drive). It seems that using a thumb drive to install requires the manual install option.

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

I followed the instructions at the top and the result is quite wonderful except for one issue, thus this post. My 4G model ended up with 1.6GB free after installing an nLited'd version of XP Pro with SP3 slipstreamed in. IE7 was also installed via nLite.

My problem is this: when I open an MHT file using IE7 it is not rendered properly. Instead, the result looks like source code, starting with "From: Subject:.... Mime - Version 1 Content, etc. blah blah" There are no images and lots of equal signs within the text. I'm assuming this is either:

* SP3
* IE7 having been installed with nLite (though I've since installed it over, with no joy)
* or I left something out of the install via nLite.

Any suggestions on which application, component, service or hocus-pocus I need to do to restore MHT rendering capability?

One more thing: I subsequently installed Office 2003 Word and Outlook thinking they might be needed for MHT files to render. No change.

Halp!

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

Hello everyone,

I installed winXP using NLITE, and I have a problem. I try to install RSI IDL 6.0, and I end up shortly after beginning with an error message:
1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime

I looked up Windows help, like: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888019
They advise to run some files, which don't exist in my version. Examples:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Developer\7\Intel 32\IDriver.exe (the directory Developer is not there)
C:\Program Files\InstallShield\Developer\Redist\Language Independent\i386\Isscrpt.msi (Developer is not there either)

Could you help me resolve this issue? I don't hava an idea, what selection in NLITE might make this work.

Also, System Restore is not working, and I think it is a useful stuff. Deselecting "NT Backup" in NLITE does not help itself. Do you know, what to change to make System Restore work?
Thank you!

Re: nLite slim down XP, step by step

I have question.
In the wiki article it says to copy all files from the Windows cd to a folder in our desktop. Before that I have downloaded XP SP2 Update Pack Download ->xable-SP2-UpdatePack-April-v3.0.10a.7z. Should I throw this too in the folder with the Windows cd files?
