Not sure what the graphics hardware specs are like on the Eee PC, but will it run Google Earth?
Offline
I saw a video of it running what looked like a pretty intense satellite map web app within firefox. Not sure just how well it would work with the 3-d models of Google Earth, but I think it is promising.

I heard that the google earth is extremely slowwwww on Eee PC .... practically unusable. So, forget about it.

from the official site:
The Google Earth client requires certain system configurations in order to run smoothly.
Minimum configuration:
* Operating System: Windows 2000, Windows XP
* CPU: Pentium 3, 500Mhz - System Memory (RAM): 128MB RAM
* Hard Disk: 400MB free space
* Network Speed: 128 Kbits/sec
* Graphics Card: 3D-capable with 16MB of VRAM
* Screen: 1024x768, "16-bit High Color" screen
Recommended configuration:
* Operating System: Windows XP
* CPU: Pentium 4 2.4GHz+ or AMD 2400xp+
* System Memory (RAM): 512MB RAM
* Hard Disk: 2GB free space
* Network Speed: 768 Kbits/sec
* Graphics Card: 3D-capable with 32MB of VRAM
* Screen: 1280x1024, "32-bit True Color" screen

I can confirm it is unusable under Linux. Like watching paint dry. Don't know why its so bad - The specs are good enough. Maybe reclocking CPU to 900Mhz would help.

I'm currently using it under windows XP and it runs pretty good. Its not as quick as a full size laptop, but it perfectly usable. The screen is a little bit small, but otherwise, no problems........

good to hear that eee can cope with a little pressure ![]()

I found something odd today when using Google Earth on Linux on the eee pc. When using google earth on the regular lcd, google earth is very slow. However, when the eee pc is running on an external lcd, it runs much more smoothly.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is this a problem with google earth, or the operating system?

i had it running quick when i first installed it...now it's running quite horrible.

i installed google earth and played around with it for about 5mins, was really slow, no wait painfully slow (need to find a word to describe been slower than slow)
but if it works in windows xp ok, and on an external display ok as well, there must be something up with the graphics configuration of the screen

Yeah, at first I thought the problem was the speed of the eee pc. I was really surprised when moving to the external display sped up the app considerably (it worked impressively in this context). In fact, everything about the app was faster from the graphical display to the text entry.
Nothing changed except the display... I had both displays on at the time, so it wasn't a different resolution or anything. It was mirroring the eee pc display to th external monitor.
It would be nice to figure out what is happening here.. it s possible that other apps are experiencing the same slowdown.

I finally got around to installing this today and saw the same behavior. I also noticed the message in the shell window that starts the actual app regarding some irq settings. This message only appears when running on the internal lcd. Googling around I saw that many people running linux have the same problem, but I only found a possible fix in one post. It involves compiling a C code function to replace the problematic one in google earth, and altering the google earth startup script.
I've tested it and it works! It also doesn't seem to hurt running on the external display. I'll be posting a how-to article on the wiki with the required files soon. ![]()

That's pretty cool, and it gives you a lot more map real estate than Google Maps does, which is definitely an advantage on the Eee PC. It remembers where you are when you close/reopen the browser too.

its great! I just followed the wiki and google earth now run super smoothly!
however, there are 2 minor problems, one can be fixed, the other probably out of question
1. the fix file is not directly executable, altho it supposed to be. I don't remember if chmod a+x works, but I did create a shortcut which execute the command "sh [path to googleerth]", it works nicely
2. maximization will expand the title bar out of screen, I can't complain tho, much better than not-usable.

Regarding #1, you must have downloaded the first version of the zip file. You are correct about using chmod a+x, in fact I discuss this in regards to google's install file. I've finished the wiki page, and the current version of the zip file should work properly.
I don't think the speed fix changed anything related to #2, but you could always edit the script file to remove the PRELOAD reference to go back to the original behavior. BTW, you can press F11 or use the View->Full Screen menu item to toggle using the whole screen in google earth. This really helps usability on the internal screen.

By the way, be sure to adjust the cache file size for google earth or it will use up to 400MB!

I've installed the current version from Google earth and it runs very smoothly on my 900. I greatly appreciate the multitouchpad for zooming in and out BUT one thing I would like to improve : when you zoom in to see a building (let's say the Eiffel Tower !!) I can't see anything, juste some pixels. Is it because of the video card ?

I am a EEE 901 user with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (v8.10).
I think that GoogleEarth was properly working on the Xandros version, but it does go horribly slow in Ubuntu, and I don't know why.
I followed these instructions with NO LUCK:
http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:fixgoogleearthspeed
1) I don't see the "drmWaitVBlank" errors neither before or after applying the patch AND the application is unusably slow both before and after patching.
2) In my case there is NO atmosphere option in GoogleEarth configuration to change from true to false, so I created it (to false) and I get the feeling that it doesn't change anything (I think the atmosphere is there still).
What can I do now? Any ideas?
