I don't believe that you can flash the 8804 BIOS from Linux - it doesn't seem to automatically detect it as an available update. Use the Windows or DOS flash utility from the ASUS website.I checked several Asus websites but I can't locate the DOS flash utility you describe. Can you provide a link?
I haven't tried it myself - no necessity - but it's one of these, I believe:
ASUS USB Flash Utility for WIN XP
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/EeePC4G(701)/BootTool_XP_071011.zip
AFU Utility for DOS
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/EeePC4G(701)/Afudos_XP_071011.zip
You'll probably need to use the first one to make a bootable USB key, then the second one is the actual executable that can flash the BIOS.

I used the Asus Bios update utility. Am I supposed to use the above to update? Also, what .bin file are you refering to? I get a .rom file as a BIOS file.

Well...I thought I'd give 8804 a try. It seemed quite stable, but put those wavy lines in the screen, so I used the Asus Update utility to flash back to 0401. I left the room for about 10 minutes while it was programming and came back to find the computer off. Pushed the power button, nothing. I don't get indicator lights or any sign that it works.
Ouch? I guess the bios has been corrupted, but I thought you would still get some kind of activity. Looks like I'll have to send it back to Asus :-(

Can anyone decipher Asus' numbering of BIOS releases ?
There are the versions
Version: 8804 Date: 07/25/2007-18:18:29
Version: 0204 Date: 10/05/2007-23:34:14
Version: 0401 build: 10/17/2007
Version: 0127 Date: 2007/11/06
If they use some kind of count-down, then we should wait for the version 0000, which will be the final release that works perfectly.

I have no idea wht the numbering is about, but the 8804 version seems to be a real latest version. Other then wavy lines being barely noticeable, I found nothing wrong with 8804. I noticed an increase in performance which is nice.

I recently updated to 8804, I didn't notice anything going wromg, I also updated ram. I have a theory that those who have problems with 8804 with the screen or instablility may have ram incapable of the speed that setting it at 100 fsb can handle. Although my ram isnt rated at 800mhz, its 667 It seems to have no stability issues, where when I used the built in 512 I had those wavy lines. I'll run more extensive tests in a few hours.

So when you upgraded your ram, the wavy lines dissappear ?

well I can't say for sure that its purely is because of the ram upgrade, Vista maybe handling some of that. But There is no wavy lines on my screeen, or if they're its much less severe than with my 512 stick

Umm, I have to say, the screen became wavy after all, it just took time, It was on, non-wavy for about 2 hours.

After messing with the 8804 bios for the last 2 days and having it work ok, i got into work this morning, and bam. No BSD or anything, just constant lockups. But it was working for the last few days?????
Anyway, restored back to 0401 and fortunately the webcam, and USB2 still work ok, so i am happy.
Didnt notice the wavy line issue with 8804 that ppl were talking about though.
Has anyone tried the 0127 bios yet? What are the features etc?

Isnt that bios for the eee pc 700 not the 701 most of us have?

I believe so. I can't recall who tried, but a member here tried to flash the 0127 BIOS and was told by the flashing utility that "This BIOS is not compatible with your machine."

Hmmmm this worries me. It looks like the 8804 bios is the only one that lets you choose between 70 MHz and 100 MHz. This bios is unstable. In all later versions you can not choose 100 MHz. There is no listing of CPU speed in the specification page on Asus web site. They do not mention of CPU speed on the box or in the manual. There is no official reponse from Asus regarding this issue.
Anyone else seeing a pattern?

I agree with you that it looks like a conspiracy ![]()

Or ASUS realized that they needed more battery life/less heat, and hurredly knocked it down to 630MHz. ![]()

Or maybe the batch of chips that ASUS got aren't stable at higher speeds??

As of last night the 0127 bios isn't on the Asus downloads page any longer. Heck there's not even a "bios" section on the vertical list, but you can click on the "bios" tab above.
My Eee PC is currently with Asus to be repaired from the aforementioned bios problems earlier in this thread.

just recently got my eee (uk),
it came with the 0401 bios, listed my processor at 900mhz (expected right?)
came with 1gb ram rated at 667mhz
webcam works, wireless works updated latest gfx drivers..
0401 is the latest bios version right? the date seems to suggest so, so what would the perks be of going for the 8804?

No one has really mentioned the 0302 BIOS, I havent seen any other posts about it, apart from a brief mention on this post.

If you're talking about the output from cpufreq or cpuinfo, it will report 900MHz but not actually be running at it.
Download and run GeekBench2 for Linux and post your results - if you're truly running at 900, your score will be in the ~670 range. If it's ~560, you're only at 630MHz.
