MP3 player on eee 4g non-surf--recognized player

After scanning the forums and reading a couple threads, I found that several users were having trouble with mp3 players being recognized by xandros/eee.  I was too.

As a data point, I'd note that i just bought a sandisk sansa express, and straight out of the box,  it showed up on my (advanced) desktop just fine. I cut and pasted files into it no problem using file manager. fwiw, it's an mts usb player, and yet it worked just fine.

The player won't reconize a file structure, so it's not a perfect solutuion, but it works fine for what i wanted to use it for--updating podcasts every morning for  my commute.  fwiw, the sansa express is a usb-based player and doesn"t need any extra cables or drivers. just plug it into a usb port and good to go..

disclosure time: i have no connetion to any company making this stuff; just an eeepc user looking for a simple solution.

gotta say, too, that i upgraded my 4g ram from 512 to 1gb. took me a few  minutes, web browsing is much faster, open office still boots as sluggish as it did before. a fair trade for $23 worth of memory.

cheers,

-gmaster

Thank you, thank you! Just the info I needed. I've ordered the one with the FM tuner. I'll report back when it arrives. smile

there is a thread or threads with instructions on how to manually mount your mp3 players under xandros. http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=9998 someone also posted the instructions in nice steps on their blog here also: http://reyblogstoo.wordpress.com/2008/0 … he-eee-pc/ it does say its for the zen stone plus but it worked fine with my sony player also.

Re: MP3 player on eee 4g non-surf--recognized player

thanks, gary. good info. i found them on my first search, but the bummer with those, if i understand them correctly, is that  you have to go through those steps each time you want to mount the player. i was looking for a simpler option.

a few more data points after using a sansa express for a week or so.

no way to do playlists, or at least no way i've found. that makes it at least as good as a shuffle. heheh. fine for me, as this is a podcast only device, or shuffled music for running.

no bookmarking. this could be a deal killer for some. i've found that if you pause the unit and power off, it will resume from the same place on power up. but not if you change tracks. for me, thats not a problem for short podcasts, but i'd be hesitant to use it for anything longer than an hour. if you're running xp, it should at least allow audible. but not with linux.

this thing fast-forwards slowly. so it's all the more painful if you dont
do the power off drill right.

for as cheap as the express is, i can work with those limitations, as i have other players for other uses. i like the express for working on the eee. i usually have the eee with me if i need to make big changes.

for podcasts, i bookmark their rss feeds in safari, in a podcast folder in my bookmarks, visit the sites, right click and "save as"--pointing the browser save to the express. takes seconds to update the four or five podcasts i listen to, saving straight to the player to save space on my meager eee 4g flash drive.

ymmv, of course!

you might not be understanding them then. you dont have to go through the steps each time. you simply run the command in terminal after you connect your player. after finding my device name i just have to run this command "sudo mount /dev/sdc1". it does work only once though as if you disconnect the player and reconnect it is given a different name/number. you would have to restart to each time you want to use it. to make it even easier though i used the menu editor and added the command in there, just name it and select run in terminal and your all set. smile

Hi gmaster,

I've been playing around with my new Sandisk Sansa Express 1GB + FM tuner, and it's perfect for what I want. (To replace my Creative Muvo v100 and add USB recharge and FM Tuner). It shows up in File Manager and I can drag and drop mp3s onto it.

I've added it as a Media Device in Music Manager (Amarok) as a "Generic Audio Player" mounted at "/media/Sansa Express/partition1", and I've added "/Music" to the front of the 'Song location' string. Now I can use Amarok to transfer mp3s to it! (Right click album and 'Transfer to Media Device', then hit the Transfer button on the Media Devices window.) Great!

Thanks so much for posting about this mp3 player. smile

Re: MP3 player on eee 4g non-surf--recognized player

I updated the xandros default file manager and now my zen stone plus is mounted automatically and now properly shows all the folders and files on it.

It now mounts media under letters, Windows style ..

('File Manager 4.0 (using KDE 3.4.2)' according to about FIle Manager)

Re: MP3 player on eee 4g non-surf--recognized player

Yes this is because of an updated usbstorageapplet. I've updated the post at http://themobileme.net/2008/02/11/getti … he-eee-pc/ accordingly. Amarok may still have issues properly detecting the device unless you update fstab
