Ebay car power supply review and howto disassemble

I got my car power supply in today for my Eee PC.

I bought it from ayi45tw. It took 10 days to get to South Carolina from Taiwan, and required signature to deliver which was all expected.

Unfortunately, it says 2 amps@9v out as stated in the ad. This is less than the 9.5v 2.3amp charger that came with the Eee PC unit.

Well, I plugged it in today and at 60% battery power with the Eee PC turned off, it did NOT light the charge LED on the front of the unit. I booted it up and windows said it was running on AC power, and the battery indicated as charging. More testing will come, but it seemed to run fine without the battery.

So! I bought this to be removed from the case so that I could hardwire it into an ignition-switched 12v supply. My car's useless ciggarette lighter outlets are such, so I'm going to remove one of them and install a button there tomorrow to turn on/off the Eee PC Car adaptor I bought on ebay.

When you have the guy in your hand, it looks pretty damn sealed up. there are no visible snaps/etc. I made a video on youtube on how to take it appart in case there are any other dummies here. It took me a good bit to figure out how to take it appart because I had never done anything like that before. It really is simple.

I am having trouble uploading to youtube at the moment. anyway. I'll post it here when I get it up there.

Well, it should be pretty easy to cut out a project box to hold this sucker. One will need to wire a fuse holder in for what looks like a 250v 3amp fuse that's in it. Cut a couple holes for the LED and wire for the EeePC (it's got a nice little boot that will keep you from pulling it out of the box, so measure closely when cutting the hole for it. Then drill a little hole for the 12v supply wires to be wired into an IGNITION-SWITCHED 12v supply. you will probably need your FSM to find one unless you know what your doing. My car's supply to the ciggarette lighters are ignition switched, so that will work for me. I only need 1 for a cell charger anyway and I have two, so rather than splice (and possibly overload the fuse/circuit with 2 chargers/etc) I'm just going to unplug it and splice into the wires at the plug.

Good luck! I will update as I get the Eee PC mounted up and the electronics from the charger moved into the project box.

I think you have an error in your video. Typically, the center connection in a cigarette adapter is positive so that would be where the fuse in that power supply is located. I sounds like you were going to hook the hard wire positive from the car to the outside spring connector. That is normally the negative.

Check this by using a volt meter in the car socket and I thing you will find that the outside is ground.

Re: Ebay car power supply review and howto disassemble

Your absolutely correct. It just confused me because they used a red wire to go to the ground. haha

Yeah, the positive pad is marked "+" and I've yet to wire it into the ignition. Waiting for a tracking number for some parts before I get off my butt to finish some wiring and wrenching on the car.

I think a fuse can be on either side, but it's typically on the positive.

Also, there is another error. The fuse is a 250volt, not 250watt 3 amp slow blow fuse.

Re: Ebay car power supply review and howto disassemble

I posted this in another area, but I'll do it again just so people know. I got the car adaptor from Brando. I bought from Wal-Mart a device that plugs into an AC wall outlet and has a cigarette lighter adaptor on it. It's sold as a way to use your car charger to charge your phone from AC. Well, the EEEPC wouldn't do anything when plugged into the cigarette lighter/wal-mart ac adaptor.

As it turns out, the wal-mart adaptor provides 12 volts, but only 0.8 amps...far less than the 3+ amps required.

Just so you know...you can't do that.

Re: Ebay car power supply review and howto disassemble

Plugging a 3A 12v mains adaptor into my Brando car adaptor with a multimeter measuring the amps it got to just over 2A with the Eee on and it's battery charging at the same time, so a 12v PSU rated at 2.5A would be the minimum I'd put into the car adaptor.

Friends --

Wouldn't it be easier, cheaper and safer simply to use a power inverter?

Here's an example, at about USD$25 delivered.

At that price I wouldn't expect it to produce a sine wave AC source, if I remember correctly someone said they had problems with sawtooth wave AC source in that when they powered thier Eee with it the touchpad went screwey.

Furthermore if you're running off batteries charged from solar then you'd want the highest efficiency in converting the source voltage to Eee voltage, upconverting it to 110v or 240v and then converting that down to Eee voltage doesn't strike me as very efficient.

Also I've found a 2nd use for my Eee car adaptor, it pefectly powers my Sony Glasstron PLM-S700 LCD glasses smile
