Re: Successful software installs

@DonkeyBeliever: thanks for the tip, but I had already decided 'against' that and 'for' setting the whole bar to disappear after a couple of seconds.
In that way I save the height of the whole bar, instead of just slimming it down.
A mouse over brings it back if and when needed.

And of course both can be done.

Re: Successful software installs

I downloaded the 9.50 version of Opera referred to in this thread above. The I unpacked it, and got two folders named DEBIAN and CONTENT. I cannot find anything resembling install sh referred to above. I also don't see how Synaptic works in here---you need to add a repository.  Can someone pls provide a more detailed explanation and step by step instructions?  Iam extremely experienced with computers, but not with Linux installs. thanks JHH

Use the static DEB from http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml … form=linux
Than sudo dpkg -i to install it.

Re: Successful software installs

Static version is not needed, use the version linked against libqt3 (included in the stock EEE Xandros).

http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/www/Opera/linux/ … n_i386.deb

dpkg -i --force-all xxxxxxx.deb

Re: Successful software installs

I installed Frostwire and the new Adobe Flash beta (with fullscreen support) using their binary tarballs without any problems. I also installed Pan, Par2, and zsnes, without any problems using the Debian repo.

Re: Successful software installs

I installed ktorrent from the debian rep. The program itself worked without a problem, but, and keep in mind I'm really new to linux, so this might be a problem on my side, the installed packages replaced a lot of standart stuff in the os. After the installation the file manager was gone from the easy mode desktop, as was the network and wireless network link.

Re: Successful software installs

Inkscape installs fine from Debian but it seems unable to size its window to fit on the Eee's screen. That's probably a problem that can be overcome. smile

EDIT:

DVArchive runs in the standard Java environment, and also successfully can stream video from a DVR to the Eee over 802.11g in full screen! Sweet!!!! big_smile

Re: Successful software installs

Mathematica 6.0 works. You can see the steps I used to install it here

http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=17766#p17766

Everything works but the palletes are a little to big for the screen. Not a problem if you really know your mathematica keyboard shortcuts.

There isn't a way to install the beta using a .deb and apt-get or dpkg, is there? I'm a little reticent to manually overwrite a package being handled by dpkg right now, but I would rather like to have full screen. sad

Adobe doesn't offer a Debian package. Just copy the libflashplayer.so file from the tarball into the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory. Make a backup of the old file so you can replace it if you run into any problems in the future.

I installed Miro from the asus repositories, but the video didn't work. Has anyone had any luck with this?

Also, I installed streamtuner and XMMS from the Debian repositories.

Re: Successful software installs

This page from the wiki covers that: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:installin … pmenttools

HTH

edit: That page tells you to add repositories.  If you've not seen that wiki page, you should probably read this one first to learn about the risks with doing that: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:adddebianfeeds

Re: Successful software installs

I got my eeepc last friday from asuslaptops.co.uk.  First thing I did was put GNU Emacs on it.  It's in the xandros repository as emacs21.  Or if you're a little braver the emacs-snapshot (Emacs 23) repositories at:

deb http://emacs.orebokech.com etch main
deb-src http://emacs.orebokech.com etch main

worked fine for me.  Obviously you should be careful about using such repositories.

Re: Successful software installs

Just tried the TeamSpeak Linux client on my Eee PC and  it works very well. Only small issue being is that the "Connect To Server" window is slightly too large but using the quick connect option gets around this.

Here's a quick dirty guide to installing -

Download the linux client from the TeamSpeak website (http://www.goteamspeak.com/downloads.php)

Then launch the xterm console via Ctrl+Alt+T then type as below -

Code:

cd “My Documents” <or wherever you saved the TS client file you downloaded to>
tar -jxf ts2_client_rc2_2032.tar.bz2
cd ts2_client_rc2_2032
sudo chmod 755 setup.sh
sudo sh setup.sh

This will then launch the GUI based installer which is very much like the one in Windows so no real explanation should be needed for this part. Simply install to: /opt/TeamSpeak2RC2

Then back in the xterm console type:

Code:

sudo ln -s /opt/TeamSpeak2RC2/TeamSpeak /usr/bin/

Once this is complete in the future if you wish to launch TeamSpeak just type 'TeamSpeak' into the xterm console window.

If you want to open teamspeak:// URL links within Mozilla Firefox:

Launch firefox and type about:config in the address bar

Right-click and select New→String Name: network.protocol-handler.app.teamspeak Value: TeamSpeak

Right-click and select New→Boolean Name: network.protocol-handler.external.teamspeak Value: true

Posted the same guide into the EeeUser Wiki its not very well done so if someone wishes to update the formatting please feel free.

Re: Successful software installs

I have installed IE4Linux (Internet Explorer for Linux) on the EE.
Following this instructions: http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Installation
It will install Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0 at least (directly from microsoft site!)

From repositories I also had to install (first) cabextract and wine.

Hope this helps. It is good for those sad pages that can only run in that old tired pony called Internet Explorer ;-)

Ps. Thanks for all the tips already!

Re: Successful software installs

A must have for anyone in a crowded coffee shop with an over accessed and unencrypted wireless.

nmap I used the nmap.x.xx.i386.deb and it installed without question using 'dpkg -i nmap*.deb'.

After recieving my Eee I put kubuntu on it so that I could use it for security auditing. It's size is a big bonus for rolling around and testing internal devices for weakness. Even though I was able to put a host of tools on it such as nmap, Nessusd, and the Nessus Client; I was not happy with kubuntu's buggy at best sleep mode, and having to use ndiswrapper. The stock OS is much faster at booting/sleeping and drives the wireless well. Kubutu had also installed nmapfe for me, but the one time I tried to use it, it required a bit of ALT-dragging because the window was much to big. I haven't bothered to try to install it in the stock OS.

Even with nothing more than nmap on it, my Eee can still move around the labs and prioritize our vulnerablity testing. If I start feeling wild, I may try to get the nessusd and Client on the stock OS.

Side note:
I haven't  bothered to enable the Advanced Desktop mode because I'm somewhat of a Term Jocky. The default CTRL-ALT-T term hates my eyes, but if you open up the File Manager and press CTRL-T, it will open up a fully configuable instance of konsole. Anti-Aliased, adjustable fonts and all.
