Re: Post your 800x480 backgrounds/wallpapers

I use the original 1024 image on my work machine.  I've scaled it down to 800x480 for my 2G....

Get permission from the people who made the ones you want. It is not safe to assume that people will be happy for you to republish as a collection. Most will be happy if they get a credit for it and their name against it - if people want to use my graphics on a web site, (not that I have put any here yet!), I normally only say yes if it a completely non commercial site, I get a name credit for the work, and a link back to my pages.

Posting here does not imply free as in beer!

How do I change the wallpaper with the default OS?

Re: Post your 800x480 backgrounds/wallpapers

Well, I grudgingly am going to use Imageshack to give these images to you. However, this is because my website is still down.

I only did a bit of a fixing up. I use this as my desktop's desktop background. When I first edit it, it was just a couple of layer, some filters, and a little blurring. Now I spice it up by making it a little cooler and to show off you have an Eee. I couldn't get a good image of the Eee PC logo, nor did I know what fonts were used, but it still looks nice.

Re: Post your 800x480 backgrounds/wallpapers

A few general comments on wallpaper guys...

If you are producing something that will be used as a background for everyday work, it is a big help to use a limited range of colours or shades, this makes it much easier to pick out the icons against a background.

Less saturated colours, light or dark, will also help with this.

For similar reasons, avoid busy images with lots of fine detail all over the place. It's not so distracting along the bottom parts, where it is less likely to be under an icon, (and more likely to be seen!)

3d screen furniture on buttons and window edges is shaded as if the light is coming from the top left - it's a subtle thing, but your wallpaper image will fit better if it is the same approximate lighting. Lighting from the top is normal, but if your light sorce in the image is on the right side, consider flipping it left to right.

Cheers,
Nick

I never see my desktop on here... But looking at it, I don't see what the problem is. A lot of OS' use a backdrop shadow on the text.

Re: Post your 800x480 backgrounds/wallpapers

I've started a web page on my site for the 'eee', and have put a bunch of wallpapers up there for you all...

http://www.starbase1.co.uk/eee.html

Let me know if there are any styles or types you feel go well, and I'll get a bunch more done in the relevant format. So far I tried to get the maximum spread of styles...

The only other thing on the page so far is my field report, but I hope to grow it shortly...

yea, it gives me four desktops to work on. it helps a lot since we have small screens and task bars.

Re: Post your 800x480 backgrounds/wallpapers

I've been looking through Wikimedia for images with an aspect ratio of about 0.6 (I've using height over width)  Numbers above 0.6 mean either hight too big or width too short - so the image will squash flatter when resized.  That's not too bad, especially if you crop thee image and remember you can have a collapsible taskbar.

I also use site like 10e.org or szanalmas to either get images, or get links to really cool archives of images.

Here's what I'm using right  now:

What would be cool: A wallpapers directory, and a random wallpaper selected on startup, or every X minutes.

What you described works (very well) in Advanced Mode. Just right click on your desktop and adjust the settings.
