Re: Mod LCD 8.4" 80% Complete but ...

That looks to me like its set for 16:9 from the E itself. The display is 4:3 and clearly unable to display widescreen.
Im sure I read somewhere that the display was switchable in some way and someone hinted at a possible display change for future releases.

I think it might be a driver issue if the ratio is wrong, but I really couldn't say for sure.

Other than that, this mod looks awesome! Does the lid close properly with the lcd installed?
Hope you can sort it big_smile

Re: Mod LCD 8.4" 80% Complete but ...

I think that video port on mobo is design to give a 16:9 signal, but if you short the vga signal like this:
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=7562
the screen should change aspect ratio... this is what I think and hope it works!
I hope to be helpful, so please let me know!
A question... you are intentioned on put speakers again... and where?
ciao wink

Hi jkk! You wanna put it into yours too???!!! Great!
However I think his problem has an hardware nature, not just a software cause.
Hwvr both the ways are simple to try so please let us know!

Re: Mod LCD 8.4" 80% Complete but ...

Thanks for the pinout. This means that both datasheets I have for the EEE's screen are the wrong ones.

This is very good news. You can still view things even without the BIOS being modded. It also means that the screen in the Fujitsu P1000 series (8.9" 1024X600) is compatible.

Power Strip should be able to set the timings to the correct ones for the screen (check the datasheet of the screen for the timings needed). Under Linux, a new modeline could be created.

marcoeee: The trouble is sort of inbetween, the VGA BIOS thinks it has a different screen and therefore timings, so weird things happen. It should be able to be overridden by software running on the OS.

Re: Mod LCD 8.4" 80% Complete but ...

This is what they are recommending for the Everex Cloudbook possible replacements.

Screen

As Cloudbooks uses LVDS, it is relatively easy to find screen for it. If you need higher resolution, you should look for Kohjinsa/Samsung 7 inch screens. You would need some expertise to swap it, but it is fully possible.

There are also bigger screens, but you would need to make new "face plate" for it. If you really want to go big, try to find 8.9 inch LVDS LED backlighted screen. Toshiba and other use them. 8.9" 1280 x 768 would be nice! Remember first check the real specs, you want to see the pinouts before buying. You could also use older non LED screens, but they would eat your battery faster and you would need to find place for the inverter.

I'm assuming that the eeePC uses a similar set up?

Re: Mod LCD 8.4" 80% Complete but ...

The EEE does use a simular setup it seems. Don't expect a drop-in replacement for either laptop, though. Custom cabling and perhaps other mods will be needed (I.E. to put in a Fujitsu P1000 display in, you'd need to tap another place for 3.3Volts to power the screen in the EEE)
