I just had to hit f9 and reload the OS again.. oh well..

You have to enable the extra repos to install the mplayer package. You can disable them after you're done.
That did it...I can see my quicktime files now....thanks!

The guys at freeweb7 came through after all and with a little help from
Niel1952 I posted the scripts back up. Get them while they're hot

This is a great script, and an even better concept. I've been playing with my Eee now for the better part of the day and have been making and unmaking changes, resetting the thing, learning and loving it. Finding this script really made my afternoon, because it's simple, modular, and hack-friendly.
I've just added the option to disable standby mode on lid closure, and I'm probably going to do another thing or two (remove the themes install options, maybe, just to streamline) before I save my own version of pimpmyee.sh.
Thanks, derred!

Turn on the icewm start menu (and load up my menu)
Install Rox-filer
drop the assus-launcher
change the background to something nice.
Get rid of the extra icon **** on the bar (SOS/etc)
Check Email ![]()
Install Gimp
Install VLC
Cheers

You won't be able to use a script running under the built in Xandros to do this, as by the time the script is run, /dev/sda1 (the system partition that you'd need to alter to get rescue mode up in) is mounted read only. Any changes you make to /boot/grub/menu.lst would look as if they'd been done, but actually you would have created a copy on /dev/sda2 which the bootloader will ignore. Ah, the joys of unionfs...
Would it be possible to use the technique I described here to overcome that limitation? Except you would need to remount the partition as read-write.

Hi guys. I'm writing a small bash customization script to take care of all the little things that you have to do to a newly formated Eee.
Fantastic idea. I'm reading the script now. Will have to try it later.
Suggestion for item 4: # Enable extra repos (replace sources.list)
Rearrange order of steps to be more failure proof.
Make a backup copy of /etc/apt/sources.list ONLY if backup file does not already exist.
Ditto for /etc/apt/preferences.
Create tmp/.sources
Create tmp/.apt.preferences
Then overwrite /etc/apt/preferences
Then overwrite /etc/apt/sources.list

I have yet to write my first FireFox extension (although I'm getting good with GreaseMonkey in FF). I was thinking it may be possible for an FF extension to execute shell scripts. An FF extension can package up extra files, and could possibly even provide a better menu interface.
This would make it very easy to get started from default Easy mode. Just daydreaming.
I have a number of other improvements I always make to the Advanced Desktop mode.
* Use the shorter "Launch" icon. (eg, copy a couple of bitmaps, making backups first)
* Change a few KDE shortcut keys. (Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Alt-Tab should NOT switch desktops because I want those keys reserved for FireFox, just like in Easy Mode.) Alt-F10 should Maximize/Restore, just like in Easy mode. (Copy a file into the ".kde" folder.)
* Change the clock display format to a shorter format without AM/PM. Just: 04:11. I already know if it is AM/PM. (Append a line to a file in the ".kde" folder.)
I'll post more details later.
A couple other suggestions that apply to both Advanced and Easy mode.
* Make the Screen Saver Power Aware. (A couple tweaks in KControl, or just copy/alter a file in the ".kde" folder.)
* Turn on display power management (so that the screensaver turns off the backlight properly instead of just drawing black but with the light still on)

Hi guys. Love some of the suggestions, especially the idea of making the KDE side of things more usable. For the moment I'm experimenting with Ubuntu on my own machine and I quite like it. What basically amounts to is: scripting on hold until I get a SDHC and move Ubuntu to that.
On the other hand If you guys make any improvements I'd be glad to host your version of the script, and it'll be the first thing I run after I reinstall Xandros ![]()

I have added this to the wiki: Enable Advanced Desktop - The Wizard Way
Offline
for all the ones with a star there is a tutorial on the wiki afaik.
what i basically do is:
*1. open a terminal and get the packages for advanced mode
*2. copy effem's pre compiled 2g kernel fixes to my home directory
*3. re-boot into rescue mode
4. mount drives and add kernels to /mnt-system/boot
5. backup and update the grub menu list file
6. reboot into easy mode
7. check to make sure the kernel found the ram by using 'free' command in terminal
*8. go to my prefs and enable advanced mode, reboot
9. in advanced mode add a script that i made that toggles screen flipping
10. open antivirus and disable it from lanching at startup
11. get all my fav firefox plugins; fireftp, download status bar, firebug
12. add all my accounts to pidigin
*13. add repos, updte, pgrade
14. install; vlc inkscape etc.
*15. replace stock kicker buttons
in advanced mode i really like pressin Alt+f3, v, f, to get full screen mode.

The site for Derred's script seems to be down. Anyone know where else to DL it? (nevermind it's up. Thanks for this!)

That's nice description of the scripts, but not the scripts. The problem is that the link http://derred.freeweb7.com/Scripts/pimpmyeee.sh is unreliable -- freeweb7 seems to be unavailable more often than not.
Perhaps sourceforge would be a more appropriate host or the wiki or the foums.

I have been trying, for a couple of days now, to download the scripts but they do not seem to be available. Is there another location or is it possible for someone to send them to me? I can't wait to try these out!

HI
i have tried to access derred's site for a copy of pimpmyeee.sh several times over the last week. It always seems to be down and wonder if anyone had a copy they could either place on the forum or email directly?.

I'll second some additional/alternative hosting space as I've been unable to access the derred site either.

I'm looking around for a new/alternate home for the scripts. If (I know I'm gonna regret this) you need them PM me an address for me to send them to, Title it Pimpit or something.
In the meantime, however, if anybody can host the 9.8 k I'd be much obliged.
I know it's been a long time since I last posted and even longer without an update. I promise that a new version of the scripts will be out by the 28th. If I'll have any place to put them, that's a whole nother matter ![]()

I'd have no problem hosting them on my site for now. I'll do this when I get home from work.

Thanks in advance Marf
In the meantime I got them up on another site

Let's hope this one stays up. At least for tonight...

...any reason why we couldn't start this script on code.google.com?
I'd be up to create the project if derrod is willing to greenlight.
