Today I installed Stellarium (http://www.stellarium.org/) on my Eee-PC.
But Stellarium don't starts, because it wants a 1024x768 screen when it starts the first time. So I had to use my external TFT (using 1024x768) and Stellarium starts without problem. Now I set the screen resolution to 800x480 (yes, it's supported!) and closed Stallarium. Now I disconnect my external TFT and start Stallarium again. Now it works fine on the Eee display...
Great programm and much better than KStars ![]()

It would be great to see some details as to how you did the install and got it going.
I wonder if there is a default config file that can be edited so this will run, for those of us without an external monitor..?

I used "deb ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free" in sources.list and installed Stellarium with "apt-get install stellarium".
I just try the following way...
After the first start (remember it won't start") you should see in your HOME the directory ".stellarium".
There you will find the "config.ini". Edit the config.ini now.
[video]
fullscreen = true
screen_w = 800
screen_h = 480
bbp_mode = 16
Save the file and start Stellarium again.
This should work fine!
To infinity and beyond! Have fun! ![]()

Stellarium and Celestia are not the same program.
Hence my statement "Now celestia". ie, we got stellarium going, now lets get the other great opensource astronomy program, celestia, running.

Read posts on Stellarium and Celestia with interest and managed to install the former with the tip about screen adjustment via external monitor. However Celestia defeated me.. Brainstorm... I use a USB stick with Portable Apps loaded with lots of progs including Portable Celestia.
With Wine already installed on my 701 and Open with Wine its up and running from the .exe file as do most of the other .exe's, not all.
If you want to try it its on John Haller's Portable Apps site under Development, it is a Beta under testing but so far I can find no bugs, although a Port App of Stellarium would not run, andd suggests I reload it due to a corruption.
Much to my suprise the actual Port Apps Launcher itself will install under Wine, correctly placing it on the bottom right hand corner of the screen, and some, I have not checked all, progs will run from this launcher without having to load through Wine again. This needs further checking, if Port Apps can work 100% then you can have every Port App conversion running on Linux from a stick without the problems of command lines, Synaptic, etc. Yes I am a Linux virgin and I like an easy life, I control my computer, it does not control me

What exactly do you mean by "Port App"??
You do realise most open source software is originally written for Linux, and is sometimes then "ported" over to Windows and/or Mac?

I shortened the name Portable App to Port App. If you browse for the latter it will take you to the builder of this program, John Haller and his site.
A Portable App is normally an existing program that is stripped/compressed to reduce its size. It is designed to run under Windows from a separate launch/start menu in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, the latest version can be moved to any part of screen.
The advantage is that you can carry your own software and data around and use any computer to run it without leaving a footprint.
The main advantage to my mind is that I can load Windows specific software onto the Portable App menu which will run on any host Windows OS, and at the same time run the same software through Wine on Linux, I don'nt need two versions of the same software and nothing needs to be installed'

Yeh I'm well aware what portable apps are, I have the www.portableapps.com menu and most of the apps installed onto one of my USB sticks, that I use at work.
However when you say "port app" it takes on a whole different meaning, as a ported app means one that has been recompiled to work on another operating system, which considering you were talking about running one operating system's programs on another, would tend to suggest that's what you meant.
simple misunderstanding.
f you browse for the latter it will take you to the builder of this program, John Haller and his site
if you google "port app", most of the results are, as I suspected about tweaking software to be recompiled for different operating systems. The Portable Apps links are there too, as is a Google suggestion that actually you meant to type "Portable Apps"

Stellarium is included in the default Xandros distribution on my 901, and works fine as is. It is under education / science.

Hi I was wondering if you had problems with low framerates? I am getting an unusable frame rate of around 2 fps on the eee 701. However I am using xubuntu, so just wanted to check if it was a ubuntu issue or some settings I need to change to get it working.
