I'm running Vice (C64 emulator) on my Eee an it works quit well.
But:
1.) The Eee keyboard layout is running me crazy. It's hard to use for some games ![]()
2.) You can't double the screen, so it's only 320x200 pixel
3.) With an external monitor you can double the screen (tested on 1024x768)
Short info:
After installing the Vice you will need to create a directory in your home. Follow this steps...
mkdir .vice
cd .vice
mkdir C64
cd C64
You need to copy the C64 roms into the .vice/C64 now.
If you don't own the files you can copy them form the Frodo C64 Emulator which you can find here: http://frodo.cebix.net/
Download the .tar.gz file and copy the following files into .vice/C64/.
1541 ROM
Basic ROM
Char ROM
Kernal ROM
Rename the files....
1541 ROM -> dos154
Basic ROM -> basic
Char ROM -> chargen
Kernal ROM -> kernal
And your done. Start the C64 in a console with the command X64. You should see a C64 screen now.
Joystick emulation:
The custom layout uses the keys w, e, r, s, d, f, x, c, v for the directions and space for the fire button instead.
w e r (up)
s d f (left right)
x c v (down)
space (fire)

All I get is a black blank screen, Im told if I go to VIC-II settings and enable "hardware scaling" this will fix it - it does in Ubuntu Gutsy, but when running on the EEE theres no hardware scaling to select! anyone know why?

I can get VICE working fine by using the instructions at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=278022
But the keyboard mapping for the joystick is just weird (2, `, 1 and the tab keys for joystick directions) and there appears to be noway to change it.
Very frustrating as it runs fine with sound and 2x screen but the keyboard layout makes games unplayable.

I'm not sure if it helps or not, but...

... might help out. Once I'm done working on my assignment I will try it out.

I compiled it and installed the roms as instructed, it works fine for me too. Then I uninstalled it and followed the checkinstall process in the link from Vanamonde. Here's the deb package built, if anyone is interested: vice-1.22

This is good news. I have an eee-pc on the way, and I was hoping to be able to run VICE. However, I'm curious. Being that the eee-pc has 480 vertical pixels. I would think it should be possible to get a larger screen. Maybe a full-screen mode of some kind could do it. After all, the C64's main display is only 200 pixels tall and double that is 400. So you would still have 80 pixels left for the border on top and bottom. Maybe we could coerce the VICE team to make modification for the eee?
How is the speed? does everything run smoothly?

Okay, I downloaded the .deb package and installed it. It worked right away except two problems:
1) It doesn't add anything to the desktop icons (how do I do this?)
2) For some reason there is an extra area of useless screen space being used at the bottom of the screen where the disk-drive activity is normally shown. This is not normal for VICE.
