HOWTO: create a CD/DVD player for the eeepc in 10 steps! (beginner)

Create a USB CDROM device

Needed tools

- 1 CD/DVD ROM player
- 1 External HD enclosure.
- 1 Screwdriver
- Your good cheer!

Reasons Why?:

- To install Bootable CD's you downloaded as ISO's from the net to your Eeepc
- You don't want to buy an external CD/DVD
- You have the parts at home, or want to spend less then 20$
- To install/copy software such as drivers or games from a CD/DVD ROM disk.

Possible drawbacks:

- USB enclosure or CD/DVD player is not recognised by Eeepc or Xandros.

In my case it worked just fine, and it's costing me 0$, since I have the parts laying here.
In my example here(photo's taken from my cellphone's camera, so pardon me for the quality) the setup can be used to install an OS; not particularly to run arround with the device.

This thread is just made for fun, and hopefully you'll benefit from it!

Here are the pics:

1- Get your desktop's DVD player:

2- Get an enclosure:

3- Open Enclosure:

4- Pull out board & verify IDE connections:

5- Connect them:

6- Insert CD, connect USB, and stack the stuff comfortably:

7- Drive is recognised!

Take note: my drive gave me some trouble. On the Xandros OS, I couldn't read the cd-rom's data. So at this point I was nowhere, however, other hardware might be fully supported.
But from here the OS installation starts!

8-Reboot PC:

9-Select drive:

10: Install OS:

In step 6, it looks kinda funny on the picture, but actually the CD/DVD ROM drive is about as big as the EEEPC.
The drive rests on the blue card(printboard); because the IDE cable is too small, and 90% of the board is without electrical circuit (the only electrical circuit found on the card is before the IDE cable. Everything behind is just a plate where my whole tower is restin on comfortably.

Newegg sells a house-brand (Rosewill) USB adapter for IDE/SATA with power cable for like $10. Less messy and more versatile. I used it with one of my old DVD-ROM drives from my desktop to load XP onto my Eee.

I agree what you say; and am glad you tell me of the option of buying it all in a cable!

however I did this for the fun of it, and for not paying 1$ on material.
It was a nice experiment, that doesn't need any skill to make it work!

Here's a couple more.  I would suggest making sure that the adapter cable that you order comes with a power supply, rather than depending on the power from the Eee's USB connector.

I used the one from Surplus Computers and it worked perfectly with the SATA DVD drive I had sitting around.  I used it to install 3 or 4 different OSes on my Eee before I went back to the default Xandros (with advanced desktop).

Just a comment: if you're having trouble accessing the data on your CD/DVD, and you're running the modified 2GB Xandros kernel, keep in mind that certain kernel modules need to be updated as well.  The fix for this has come in only recently on this forum, so there's probably some people out there using the 2GB kernel with CD/DVD problems (and NFS, and SMB, and ReiserFS....)

Good guide mate. Gonna try it out soon, especially as I managed to cook my E3 and don't have a Flash drive big enough to contain the re-install files. Gonna put xp on anyway. Or maybe Ubuntu. Cheers.

I did the same for installing my ubuntu. My external conceptronic hard drive stopped working and when I opened it and I saw the circutery I was so happy!, I did this 4 weeks ago.

The only problem is that the drive must have the jumper installed as master or it will not work.

good work!

Re: HOWTO: create a CD/DVD player for the eeepc in 10 steps! (beginner)

Mine definitely only worked as master, so it seems it actually depends of the circuit you have. I know it because my desktop computer died and I used the same circuit to read the hard disks of the old one from the eeepc and when the jumper was not in master the eeepc didnt see anything.

So if anyone attemps this, if their cd/dvd doesnt work but everything looks correct, they just need to mess a little bit with the jumpers ;-)
