I have some video playable on psp in the above format.
I have no problem playing them in Ubuntu 7.10, however in eeepc, I can only get audio.
In mplayer it said h264 is missing, I try to install w32codecs but it complaint that the libc6 is too low.
I will not like to use other player. Any sugguestion ?

You could try upgrading libc6 or finding an older version of the h.264 codec.
Alternatively, try installing the binary codec package from the MPlayer site:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

The involvement of libc6 is too great so I do not try that.
I have placed all codecs inside essential-20071007 to /usr/lib/codecs
the reseult is the same.
Where can I find a workable h.264 codec ?

By far the best way is to apt-get install "downgrade" to etch mplayer. First put in your sources line the etch repos and apt-get update. Then do
"sudo apt-get install mplayer=1.0~rc1-12etch1".

Downgrade mplayer ? Will it affect my previous no problem of viewing rmvb ?

Indeed, "downgrading" would do nothing except reenable codes that were disabled as a result of patent law/licensing issues.
Please note, however, h.264 is extremely processor intensive so only "medium" resos should work without skipping. Don't even think about getting HD h.264s to work smoothly.
Edit: You should also add deb "http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main" to your sources line.
Right now, it's still early in the days for the eeepc community but eventually, a great idea would be that all you'd have to do is app get update by *replacing* the eeepc repo with an unofficial repo, do an app-get update and all these issues would be fixed for you.

I found in the Synaptic Package Manager
the installed version of mplayer is 1.0~rc1-12etchxandros10
When I look into the package properties
the latest Available version is 1:1.0-rc1svn20070225-0.3etch1
also available versions are
1.0~rc1-12etchxandros5 (update.eeepc.asus.com)
1.0~rc1-12etchxandros4 (update.eeepc.asus.com)
I tried to downgrade to 1.0~rc1-12etchxandros5 but then the package is broken, luckily I can still use mplayer.

But this player give me only sound in DivX, and No audio / Video for H264.
So I do a F9 restore and get back my DivX and sound for H264.

I thought VLC media player had playback support for h.264? why not install VLC? However it might require some newer libs too, but not sure, give it a shot.

I'm new with the whole command line stuff, and new to Linux in general.
I tried to add the new server but got the same public key not available that someone mentioned.
and then I could not downgrade to the earlier version.
would someone mind posting a step by step that I Could follow so that I could get these video files to work?
thanks!

I installed VLC from the debian multimedia repo and I can watch H.264/AVC video now!
sudo su wget http://ftp.tw.debian.org/debian-multimedia/pool/main/d/debian-multimedia-keyring/debian-multimedia-keyring_2007.02.14_all.deb dpkg -i debian-multimedia-keyring_2007.02.14_all.deb nano -w /etc/apt/sources.list
add to the list:
deb http://ftp.tw.debian.org/debian-multimedia/ stable main
Ctrl + X and press Y to save and exit.
apt-get update apt-get install vlc

Is SMplayer the same thing as Mplayer?

m67i wrote:

It is the front end.
Offline
Step by step:
open konsole
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
add: deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib
ctrl-o ctrl-x
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mplayer=1.0~rc1-12etch1
It worked for me, so I can play ipod-type video files on my EeePC (but not directly from the iPod). It's probably a good idea to disable the etch repository after you've downgraded.

Im not able to get online yet with mine, and can only copy files across via thumbdrive (Long story...), any chance there's a plugin I can use with SMplayer, or a statically compiled VLC anywhere for Debian? Im not usually a Deb / Xandros user, although I must say Im loving the EeePC ![]()
Trying to get the dependancies one by one is possible, but a bit of a PITA.. suggestions?
Also, libc6 upgrades, prefer to avoid that if I can for now ![]()

Try adding the debian repositories through the Synaptic package manager then go into the console and use "apt-get" to install. Worked for me this way.

Like it says, type sudo apt-get update, before sudo apt-get install. If you add the repository in synaptic (the gui for apt), it'll remind you to do this, but you still need to click on the reload button.
It's a great point, though, and I'll add it to the step-by-steb.
