Hey there, I just acquired my Eee 1005PR. Boy, it's a beaut.
Just wanted to know if anyone who has this particular model has access to the support site for this. From what I've seen, there's no current support page, so when I reformat, I'll try and hunt for the drivers individually and bring them to this forum topic.
Of course, when the official site comes, I'll link. From my experience, for a fresh install, the 1005PR only needs Intel GMA 3150 drivers, the Broadcom Crystal HD Decoder drivers, and of course the multitouch, SHE, etc. which will be provided later on in due time by ASUS. The multitouch trackpad drivers I'm going to experiment with older 1005 models and see if it will function just fine.
Here's some pics of my Eee 1005PR teardown, RAM upgrade, and SSD swap:

Last two images are of my netbook's Windows Experience Index, looks like my SSD is what really makes this thing fly =3 What's great is AHCI is supported, meaning full support for the OCZ Vertex LE 100gb's max read/write speeds. Standby is working swell! 2 GB of ram really also makes this machine shine. The 1 GB appears to be an A-Data branded memory module. The stock HDD is of course, a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 5400 RPM, 250 GB 8 MB cache.
Update 5/7/2010:
If this is indication, this was my day with the 1005PR..
Keep in mind that this is with no official acpi, power saving features by ASUS (SHE etc), and basically the only power saving features are from a fresh install of Win7 with no adjustment in the power section of the control panel, and the intel atom d450's cpu/chipset hardware power saving features. Bluetooth and wifi were on this entire time. Virtual memory and write caching is disabled.
100% brightness, running from noon to about 3 installing some programs post installation of win7 ultimate and just no mercy. Typical desktop usage with skype, internet browsing, music playing from the background of a youtube video, and AIM. This put the battery to about 70ish? That makes about 3 hours of constant bashing.
100% brightness, experimenting with hd video playback streaming through homegroup..from 6 to about 8 pm. Chrome and media player classic running in the background. Just installed the latest version of ESET smart security, and optimized by removing write caching and virtual memory. That is about 2 hours, not too sure of battery life at this time. It was still past half way indicated by the battery. I put the 1005PR on standby until I used it again.
The second highest brightness setting (that makes it 80% brightness), further working on media content playback, that's with the trial version of TotalMedia Theatre 7, and more youtube testing. This was from midnight until 2 am. That had the battery at about 40%, just dipped below the icon threshold past half way. I put it on standby. Looks like overnight, it decided to hibernate. So that's another 2 hours.
Turning on the computer today about 10 in the morning, yielded about 35% battery, popped on my usb headset and currently in a skype call and typing up my experience on the fellow eeeuser forum (this post right now). Right now I'm using lowest brightness. Using Chrome with 4 tabs, and Skype. So far I'm at 22% since the time of writing this post. Indicator reflects approximately 1 hr 32 mins of available time.
So this loose gauge of battery life, considering only having charged the battery 2 1/2 hours (first charge, Win7 claims it was 100% charged), I'm currently still running this netbook and I've bashed it to 100% performance constantly, and just about hit 9 hrs of usage. This isn't typical indication as the initial setting up of a windows install with various applications and such would use a lot more battery, but rather my first true time using the netbook as its intended is reflected is at the last few hrs of its life, where I'm on skype, chatting with friends, web browsing, etc.
Keep in mind I still have bluetooth on, webcam on, wifi on, etc. Brightness changes were noted in each interval that I could recall from my limited experience, but I have to say I'm absolutely impressed with its endurance.
Of note, I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64. CPU temps are hovering around 40-45 degs C with the fan running and having the netbook on top of my cotton blanket.

try getting an image or copy of the HD before reformatting

Will do. I'm actually planning on swapping the HDDs, so the original image would be preserved. Does anyone know if the disassembly is similar to any of the other 1005 models?
Offline
It's a new model, and most such information is provided by users who have taken their's apart. So it's presently unknown but chances are that for the most part it should be the same except of course for the HD card. I'm sure others will appreciate it if you can post images of the tear down for future reference...

Make sure you take lots of images when you swap your drive.

Looks like the install went well, I followed the sticky involving the pink 1005ha, and internally looks the same. No major structural differences, and my eee is SCREAMING fast. Many pics coming soon, I took lots of teardown pics and if need be I can take more. I voided the warranty anyway xD Lol, it's actually not too difficult to take apart.
I'm kind of disappointed in the broadcom drivers right now as only some videos on youtube are accelerated, and some of my .ts files are acting up. EVR sync on MPC-HC also gives me an AP Sync Failed..not sure if anyone's gotten a similar error. Alas, final judgment will come when a good batch of drivers come. I'm just excited to have this and to hopefully provide everyone with information.
Of note:
Installing a fresh install of Win7 will give you everything except for the broadcom drivers, multitouch drivers, and the intel gma 3150 drivers. I'll reflect the first post to include any more nicks that I found as I'm updating the drivers. Of course, Asus' SHE isn't available yet since the support site is not present yet.

Broadcom may need up to date drivers and you may get better results by trying to view the MP4 youtube instead of the direct flash videos.
But I didn't see the card in your pics but noticed the 3G_Con is connected and there is extra PCB on the card reader board. Suggesting the Broadcom is located underneath there, is this the case?

I reckon so..I'm going to investigate further tomorrow, I was just sort of excited that the SSD made the netbook so much faster..I apologize for not taking any more specific pictures. I'll see if I can poke inside a bit more however.
I can also confirm that MP4 youtube videos work flawlessly, and 1080p MKV MP4's are also flawless.
Of course, more tweaking to be done. Interestingly enough, the BIOS is dated February 2010...seems like they've been holding out on us eh? lol..

The 900AX already has three BIOS updates and it's not even out yet. So that's normal...
Btw, do you have Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 3? I noticed on a demo of the Eee PC Keyboard, which also uses the Broadcom HD card, that it is used to take over when playing youtube video to get the HD quality.

I know that the stock install image has it, but I wasn't able to really try it out since I swapped drives. I reckon I'm not able to redownload it somewhere, right? =/ otherwise I would've tried it..

Did it come with the Asus Recovery DVD? If not then you may have to wait till they put up the support page or consider purchasing it...

Basically Windows Media Player 12, ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre, CyberLink PowerDVD, GOM Player, KMPlayer, and Media Player Classic are now all suppose to work with the Broadcom Crystal HD card but they may not all work equally well and they aren't all free.

Im currently trying the 15 day trial of TotalMedia Theatre, and it looks like a lot of my video playback issues were resolved. Just wondering, though..how does youtube acceleration work through totalmedia theatre? does it take over the flash window and instead display an accelerated video? or am i still relying on adobe for flash gpu acceleration through the broadcom decoder?

Popular Internet High-Definition Video Support – MKV
TotalMedia Theatre 3 supports the Matroska Multimedia Container (MKV), the high-definition online video format. Also supported is Flash (FLV) with H.264 video and HE-AAC audio for playing contents from YouTube, Google Video, and more.
Looks like it takes over but you can temporarily uninstall flash and see if it will still play youtube to be sure.
CorePlayer from CoreAVC has a similar feature that lets the player use the CoreAVC codecs to play some youtube videos.

Don't use media player classic home cinema edition, it isn't as good as media player classic! I find the HC version won't play MKV's?!?
anyways, have you added the broadcom decoder as a filter on the settings on MPC? That'll give you broadcom capability on MPC. It's under options and filters. I acquired the coreAVC codec and added that. 720p MKVs play smooth now! Didn't before!
It would be interesting to see how asus fitted the broadcom chip and how they connected it so us mere mortals can add one in later! ![]()

@princedwi
Could you do me a huge favor?
Can you run your netbook on batteries until drained and record the operational time before you begin?
We are all so focused on battery life that I think your work with the SSD and new OS can tell us if it really saves battery life.
Thanks so much if you do this!

I posted my initial day's findings on the first post. Hopefully its of helpful relevance to you!

Yes, I put the broadcom decoder as a preferred filter on MPC-HD. It works fine for MKV files, it was an issue for a certain .TS file that I used to test 60 fps 1080p video. Turns out that was the only file that I've currently tested on this netbook with that particular issue (it was super accelerated playback with music not in sync at all). I can vouch that Totalmedia Theatre 3 is a definite must have for minimum hassle and maximum compatibility. It's quite the hefty price, but definitely worth it. Though I'm still intrigued that it will take over the flash. Not too sure how to try that just yet, I'll see if uninstalling adobe flash and making the program take over will work.
Ill see if I can dismantle the netbook again today and hunt for that broadcom chip. If anyone's still looking for this netbook, newegg.com should have it in stock, as of my checking this morning.

Yeah, unfortunately no recovery dvd. I reckon they wanted to promote the use of the insta-recovery on the stock 250 gb drive, It was partitioned as 100 gb C:, 10 gb recovery, and the rest as D:.

Well, you could always clone the drive... btw, did you run the original drive at all? Since Asus decided to stop providing the Recovery DVD, many of us were wondering if it they've done something like other manufacturers have done and have the system bug you to create a back up when first turned on?

Yes, I ran the original drive and ran a few reboots. What type of system bug do you mean? As in it automatically cloned when the drive was initialized and when Windows 7 was preloading software? For the record, I did not do anything past web browse using the stock drive, and i'm keeping the drive in its current state until I can somehow dump the contents so I could maybe extract various things to help out..
Anyone have ideas to do that? I can mount the drive in my hotswap bay and access it, what else should I do to get an image?
EDIT: I read that wrong. It does not bug me to make a backup from what I saw..perhaps it wants us to use Windows' backup utility? I don't know...but I read in the manual it has the easy recovery button when you boot up it should allow you to recover. I could experiment with that perhaps..

The recovery option is limited to just restoring the C: partition. But if it gave no option to create a backup then that means Asus is leaving it to us users to create our own backup or risk losing the OS if the drive either ever fails or the partition table gets corrupted.
EASEUS Todo Backup is one good app you can use, http://www.todo-backup.com/
While Clonezilla or Acronis are two other popular choices...

Princedwi,
Interested to hear if you had any problems with the Broadcom Crystal drivers after your update. Upgraded to Win 7 Home Premium x86 today and now can't install my Crystal HD drivers. Downloaded the file at your link, but it aborts midway telling me that it can't find the device. Any thoughts?
Nevermind - appears they shipped mine without the card installed. Awesome work, Asus.
