It's just another 701 Tablet mod. I just thought I share it as a continuation to my post in http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=45908
It seems now is a good time to do this kind of mod because
1) The 701 is a few years old already and I've not touched it in a while. (Now I'm enjoying my EEE again)
2) Better Touchscreen drivers are available for 90 deg, 180 deg and 270 orientations.
3) Great eBooks out there.
4) Great for watching movies made by DVD Shrink
5) It is still nice and small to bring along.
Here is my tablet ![]()

How I did my mod
1) Dis assembled the EEE. and removed everything in the top bezel
and the Foil so that it is clean for the cut-out
2) After dis assembly I placed a pattern on the top bezel of what I wanted to cut out.
I just used an xacto knife and a straight rule to guide the knife to cut it out. I also cut out the speaker guides and trimmed here and there to make the touchscreen flush and placed a thin foam high temp tape in between.
3) I also drilled a hole for the speakers
4) Then I flipped the LCD with touchscreen so as the inverter is at the top. I removed almost all of the plastic/metal screw mounts to make some room for the inverter and put it in place with high temp double sided tape. The yellow tape is Kapton.
the touchscreen controller is at the left side of the picture, below that is the left speaker. I also placed back the hinges because it would be easier to make some mods later on. I also cut the other side of the top bezel retaining just the lower portion where the hinges are. Underneath that is the temporary the wi-fi antenea. I removed the small magnet so that I can turn on the EEE.
5) I cut a portion on the metal keypad area to make way for the LCD cable to plug into the motherboard, and protected it fabric tape. I've also removed the palm rest area and the touchpad to make room for the inverter and transferred the foil to protect it.
6) I plugged the LCD wire to the board through the metal thing
7) I temporarily placed plastic pads on the top bezel and bottom cover so I could close the EEE and test it before molding the plastic cover using epoxy.
I covered it with fabric tape in the meantime.
8) I placed a stylus on the extended battery area, this is where I hold the EEE when using it as eBook reader turned 270 deg.
I would put the stylus on the top bezel later on so that it won't be left behind when I'm not using the extended battery

I've relocated the stylus. Nice thing about the DS stylus is it has the same contour as the edge of the eee. I've also posted this using ritepen handwriting recognition software.
I had to separate the metal casing and just screw it in place on it's own on the board. I had to cut a small portion on the lower right side and bend some portions of it to make way for the stylus.
then i had to make a cut-out of what my future plastic mold should look like to accommodate the stylus and have the whole casing flush.

I don't know why no one's commented yet, but this is a sweet mod and your pics definitely help anyone else whos into turning their EEE into a tablet.

Very nice and neat work. ![]()
I really admire do-it-yourselfer who have the right touch to do that.
Unfortunately I myself have just two left hands.
I'm sure if I would try that, it would be definitely the end of my beloved 701.

Thank you guys for your respose. At first I thought that no one is quite excited anymore about tablet mods as I was when I first tried doing it a week ago, I tried researching on the internet a step by step DIY but I could find only the finished product sample. At least I know that it was doable and that gave me the guts to do it. I installed the touchscreen about two years ago so doing the tablet was the next thing to do ![]()
I'll post a video on the actual step-by-step which would actually show that it is a fairly easy mod. I was surprised myself when I was able to do it.

Hi! Can you send me your step-by-step photos and/or video? Your project is exactly what I have in mind! A cheap and easy to do tablet. Question: why don´t you installed the webcam? Regards from Brazil.

Anyone ever done something like this with the 1005HA/HAB?

No, the Seashell models aren't very mod friendly...
