My 701 Tablet mod

Hey everyone, I finished my tablet mod a few weeks ago and I'm just getting around to posting it. It's made from a black eee pc 701 4g with a gig of ram. touchscreen controller/hub is underneath the left side bezel. I had to cut the hinges off of the top enclosure part and glue them on top where they would fit normally (for aesthetic purposes, really)

I think it turned out very well, just want to hear your opinions on this.

Re: My 701 Tablet mod

Thanks. If you didn't notice from the video, the touchscreen is the $33 one from DX, and that IS electrical tape holding the thing together. I'm most likely going to sand/smooth the edges down and replace it with some black silicone sealant once I'm completely sure it's good.

Re: My 701 Tablet mod

Quick update: there was a little sliver of plastic inside rattling that i got out by taking the ram cover off and taking out the ram. After putting the ram back, the eee would not boot. I was scared that some ESD had killed my eee or that shaking the eee had loosened the lcd cable, so I opened the eee and pretty much had it completely disassembled when i realized that "oh wait, did i seat the ram properly?" i reseated the ram, commected the lcd, and voila, it worked.

this means: i disassembled my eee for nothing xD

it's all back together now and everything's fine, so no worries really.

Re: My 701 Tablet mod

I'm thinking of making a hole in the case for a DSi sized stylus (3 inches long, 1/4" dia). where do you think i should put it, or should i just make a external holder on the side?

Someone on here has done this. I remember him putting a hole on the left of the sd reader and it looked good.

Ive got a touchscreen fitted in the normal eeepc flip open way ... ive yet to jump and take the risk and make it into a tablet smile

The stylus mod WAS here, but the pictures have gone :  http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=40283

However here is another guy thats done it ... look at the 4th picture all the way down to the end : http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=38812

Also if you need any styluses for the DS ... let me know, take 1 or 10 ... i dont care big_smile ... just pay for the shipping (im in the uk).

haha when i first saw the flip-open touchscreen mod i poked my 701's LCD before i modded...the eee tipped backwards and fell over....i was like, uhh, screw that, TABLET TIME! and then after i had ordered the TS had begun the transformation.

now that i think of it, i can probably scrounge up some pix of the eee internals  and make a ms paint diagram of where i cut stuff and how the wires are re-routed. those wires will be easy to draw with a touchscreen...yay.

EDIT: here they are smile

Zoev, my Eee is dead, so if you want a case, screen, touchscreen etc, I would be happy to sell it.

Re: My 701 Tablet mod

also, if anyone wants me to do this to their eee PM me and we'll work something out. you'll have to pay shipping and for the touchscreen, or send the screen along with it. turnaround time is prolly estimated 4 days from when I get it to when I ship it out, if I have the screen, tape, etc. you'll prolly also pay for whatever sealer I use, be it electrical tape or (more likely) silicone.

Hey, if you want I'd be happy to help! If you let me do it I'd most likely take tons of pics and post them smile It really is responsive. It works well with fingernails. If you want Bluetooth I'd be able to do that too.

Hypothetically, let's say I'd want you to do it. What kind of guarantee do I have that you'd actually send my 701 back to me in working order? It's not like we're neighbors, or friends from high school.. Not tryin' to be a dick about it. Just a bit cautious.

That's true. If you're worried about getting it back and it being broken, my dad and I used to run an online store where we used to have to pack stuff out to ship all the time, so we know to use a crapload of protection. Another assurance that I won't screw up your eee is that I am almost compTIA A+ certified (I'm taking the exam on the 24th) so I know my stuff. Worried about losing your stuff on the ssd? I do complete drive images on every computer I work on as a safety measure. You don't even need to send your power adapter or SD card. If you're worried I won't ship it back and just keep it, I'll give you all of my contact info (home phone #, cell #, address, add you on facebook, AIM, and windows live messenger, skype, etc) and let you verify them before you decide to send it.

Oh, also google "mxjf"  if you want to see my online rep. My newgrounds profile says I'm 16 because I haven't updated it in about a year and a half, I'm 17 now.

Re: My 701 Tablet mod

I wouldn't be able to do it for a few weeks, I have the A+ to worry about for a week and a half, then some other stuff, but I MAY be able to do it during my spring break if my dad lets me even do this to someone's computer I haven't ever met. About price? I have no idea. What do you think is a good $$?

Also, quick update, for 30mb of ssd space, I added the majority of the xp tablet edition features, such as windows journal, sticky notes, inkball, etc. they work very well. especially windows journal, its as if writing on real paper.
