There is a folder /etc/X11/icewm, by creating a folder /home/user/.icewm and copy the references file to it. I then edit the file changing the option TaskBarShowStartMenu from 0 to 1
I now get the start button in the task bar in the left bottom corner. Seems that a lot of option is there.
So now I can use the other work space without typing in the console.
Here come work space 2 :

So you can switch to the secondary workspace via the start menu?

I bet you could also set up a 12-hour taskbar clock this way. Change the TimeFormat line to:
TimeFormat="%I:%M %p"

So does this mean you can have the advanced mode and easy mode running at the same time on different workspaces without the need to reboot?

Not really. You can normally only have one window manager running at a time, and the easy mode uses the icewm window manager, and the advanced mode uses the kwin window manager.

But isn't a start menu and normal desktop, as seen in the above pics, what the advanced desktop is?

Nope, hence the "(Not Advanced Desktop)" in the title of the thread. :-)
The easy desktop is icewm with the start menu disabled... but o2smartphone figured out how to re-enable the menu. There's probably lots of interesting icewm customizations that can be done.
The "advanced desktop" that was originally going to be part of the Eee is KDE.

Really nice! So basically you can easily switch between a full fledged desktop and the easy mode by just changing work space?

There is a line in the preferences
# Show APM status on task bar in time-format
# TaskBarShowAPMTime=1 # 0/1

yeah having am/pm would be really, really nice.

Thanks o2smartphone. I've also enabled the cpu monitor - Should be useful to see how hard I'm loading my EEE doing certain tasks.
EDIT: You can also access more icewm themes - Win95 lookalike is weird. The 4 official themes are Asus... (i.e. AsusGreen)

excuse my ignorance.. is this a permanent solution, when you boot you always see the new start menu?

The file is saved under your folder, so it is still there when you re-boot. I have added a few application like vncviwer to the menu and I can easily access them in the other workspaces.

Excuse also my limited knowledge about Linux, but I am very interrested in this way of working with the EEE, having the Asus Launcher on desktop one and some other desktops with other applications.
Can you detail a little more the way to have this menu working ? Particularly the part "and copy the references file to it." refers to wich files ? Some files that are already present on the EEE or some that you have taken from elsewhere ?
Thanks in advance ![]()

that's great then, if i can get along with xandros, with this more "conventional" look, i don't think i'll need another os ; great job thanks..

This is the way I do it :
1. Fire up the File Manager in Work Tab
2. Look inside the View Menu, tick "Show Hidden Files" and "Show All File Systems"
3. In the left pane, click on My Home, create a hidden folder .icewm
3. In the left pane, go down from All File Systems to /etc/X11/icewm
4. In the right pane, ctrl-A to select all files, ctrl-C to copy
5. In the left pane, select My Home, .icewm and do a ctrl-V to paste.
6. Right click on the file "preferences", choose open with -> text editor.
7. Find the line "TaskBarShowStartMenu", change the value.
8. Save the file and restart.

Simple and efficient

Thanks a lot

That wants to go in the Wiki!

So if we have this, why would we want the "KDE" version? Isn't this the same?
p.s. I know nothing about linux

Great thread!
Where is the setting for displaying battery power percentages, assuming such a thing is even possible and such a setting exists in that preferences file?
Edit: Not percentage, I meant to say number of hours/minutes left.

You might not. :-) You can run all the same programs in either one. KDE looks a bit more professional... but Icewm takes up less memory.
Depending on how the Eee is set up, KDE might be easier to configure, since it has a graphical control panel...

some editing to the "menu" file ![]()

Will continue to edit it into "My Way"
