Android-x86 1.6 released

The Android-x86 project is glad to release the new stable version 1.6
to the public. The live cd iso and usb image are available from our
site, as usual:

   * http://www.android-x86.org/download
   * http://code.google.com/p/android-x86/downloads/list

Test reports (success or fail) are welcome as always. Please send the
reports to the Android-x86 discussion group. If you are working on
Android for x86 platform, welcome to join us. See the below contact
information.

Key Features

Android-x86 1.6 is based on the Android 1.6, aka the Donut branch. We
fixed and added many x86 specified code to let the system runs
smoothly on x86 platforms, especially for netbooks. The key features
of this release contain

   * Kernel 2.6.29 with KMS enabled. Most netbooks can run
Android-x86 in the native resolution.
   * Hardware OpenGL support on i915/i945 family chipsets. This
feature improves greatly the performance of 3D effect and video
playback. It is turned on by default if the i915 driver is available.
However, if you have trouble with it, you can disable it by adding
HWACCEL=0 to the cmdline. (by olv from 0xlab)
   * Wifi and Ethernet support. Both are configured from the GUI.
   * A new text based GUI installer which supports
ext3/ext2/ntfs/fat32 filesystems.
   * Support basic bluetooth for builtin device and external bluetooth dongle.
   * Keyboard layout is configurable. Ten layouts are supported in
this release. To use this feature, you have to install Android-x86 to
harddisk and reboot after changing the setting.
   * Fn hotkeys support for Eee PC platforms.
   * Add touch features to simulate Home/Menu/Back keys, useful for
touchscreen only devices.
   * Add software mouse cursor. Mouse wheel is also supported.

In addition to the key features, here is the list of all other improvements

   * Better keyboard support, including PageUp, PageDown, and so on.
The Ctrl key is usable in the Terminal emulator.
   * Touchscreen support for Eee PC T91 and Eee Top.
   * External usb drive and sdcard are auto mounted on plugging.
   * Add shutdown and reboot dialog. To invoke it, press the power button.
   * A hotplug tool to load driver firmwares.
   * Audio and Camera support.
   * Drivers auto detection.
   * Battery status.
   * Suspend to RAM and wakeup.
   * Adjustable Alarm Clock volume.
   * Add proxy setting.
   * Be able to su in the Terminal emulator.
   * Software keyboard is workable.
   * Support larger resolutions.
   * Chinese Pinyin IME works correctly.
   * Add video player.
   * Add more sample applications.
   * Add third party applications, include
         o OpenIntents File Manager.
         o ConnectBot ssh client.
         o AndAppStore client 1.5.8.
         o LIME IME 1.6.3.
         o RockOn 1.4.8 For Android.
   * Compressed filesystem (squashfs).
   * Debug mode including busybox.
   * NDK for x86 platforms is supported.

Re: Android-x86 1.6 released

I'm surprised there is no discussion.  Will it work with the EEE 2G?  Can it boot from an SD card (if so, how big)?  Anyone try it?

Re: Android-x86 1.6 released

It works on all Eee PC models. Yes, it is bootable from sdcard, as well as usb stick.
The released version is less than 200MB.
Please join the Android-x86 google group for discussion.

The tested platform is Eee PC, but you can just try it on others.
Please report any issue if you found.

Re: Android-x86 1.6 released

Are there instructions anywhere on HOW to make a bootable SD Card (or USB stick)?  I'm game to give it a try.  I have an external CD/DVD burner and some spare SD cards.  I see you have a link to a live image - is that how you'd run it regularly, or do you then install it to a different SD card?

Re: Android-x86 1.6 released

This is actually quite cool! Unlike Live Android this works smile
A couple of questions (I know I'm out on a limb here, but...) :

* If one somehow was to get hold of Google apps (like Gmail, Vending, & cetera) - Would it be "just" a matter of including those APKs in /system/app ? What would be needed to log on with my Google ID?
* Related to the Google login - Contact, Calendar also rely on logging on to Google. How!?!
* How big should the install partition be? The bigger the better, I know, but for running the system smoothly with a few add on apps (just like on my phone)?

Excellent work!

See this post about ChromeOS... it's the same process: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=79701  (scroll down if you are using Linux)

Re: Android-x86 1.6 released

Got it working on EEE 700 2G SD card.  I installed it on a 1 GB card, and it works with wifi.  Wifi does not work on my 900HA, however.

Browser doesn't have flash support.

I couldn't figure out how to install an android program I downloaded.  Can programs be installed when running a live version of the software?

I don't know how to make it recognize my main SSD drive, or to connect with shared windows network drives.

As a long time wondows user, I have a hard time understanding how linux works.  Still, it seems to run very fast once it boots.  I need to learn more about linux to really be able to evaluate this.

Well, if it's any consolation, Android is about as alien to a die hard Linux user as to a Windows user. OK, there's a Linux kernel deep down there in Android, but as a end user (or even developer), you don't see much of that.
Installation of APKs is best done with the file manager (I think it's IO File Manager with Android-x86). Just click on the APK and the file manager will (try to) install it. Flash has never been supported by Android (even if HTC has done some ANdroid compatible browser plugin, requiring HTCs Android extensions)

Re: Android-x86 1.6 released

Ok then.  I have some really basic questions that you can probably easily answer:

1.  I installed it on an SD card using Fat32 and unetbootin.  I believe it is running a "live" version that cannot save my sessions.  Is there a way to run it in non-live mode? I read on the Android x86 forum that Android can't save to Fat32.  Should I have formatted the SD card for FAT instead?  It would be nice if it memorized my WIFI settings, for example.

2.  On boot up it gives me three Live cd options (without installation, VESA, Debug) and an install option.  What do the three versions (especially VESA) do?  Is there a way to install it to an SD card so that I'm not running the live version?

3.  If I install programs in "live" mode, will they remain after reboot?

Thanks.

To save data properly, format it to ext3, the linux filesystem.

The VESA mode uses bios vesa extension to show the Android gui. (like Windows compatible mode)
It is used when your video card is not supported by linux kernel.
If you are using ASUS Eeepc, the video card(i915, i945) are well supported by linux kernel.
So you don't need to run vesa mode.

The debug mode, as its name suggested, is used for debugging.
You probably don't need it if you're not a developer.

The last item let you install Android-x86 into your harddisk or usb stick.

No.
But you can choose to install Android-x86 to sdcard/usb stick.

Hate to repeat myself, but: Contacts and Calendar are pretty useless if you can't sync with Google - How can I do that?

x86 is what is stopping interest.  Why bother?  Once ARM netbooks/smartbooks begin to be released more, then interest will pickup.

Re: Android-x86 1.6 released

I finally got around to checking it out, nothing too exciting but interesting to try, graphically it seems very fluid on the 701.

However I then tried the latest version (2.0) and the UI was painfully slow and jerky, anyone else experience that?

from a terminal:

sudo ifconfig -a

Is your wireless listed (ath0 or wlan0)

If so, is it UP

If not,

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

Then, if

sudo iwlist scan

shows your router, then you should be ok?

Re: Android-x86 1.6 released

Hi all.  I've now got a Android Samsung phone.  I've run this release up earlier this year, couldn't get the wifi to work then on my 1000HE.  Can't get it to work now either.  Any tricks for the 1000HE?

Hey man. From one newb to another. I think to solve your problem (and anyone else who like myself didn't know what was causing this...). When you turn on the comp hit f2 to go into setup --> onboard devices---> enable wifi. Once you boot up into android the next time around you should be able to scan for connections.

Yeah my experience seems to be the same. I did get a kick out of installing it.... unless someone knows of some creative use of android on the eee, I think I'll be heading back to browserlinux....
