My power supply died last night after two weeks. Not sure if anything happened, but you never know. Has anyone else had a failure of the AC adapter yet?
This is the one, but I haven't seen it for sale anywhere.

If it died after two weeks, I would contact the retailer you bought it from. See if you can get a replacement. If that doesn't work, contact Asus

i have experienced something similar twice now. If i leave the ac charger connected to the wall socket for a long time it seems to turn off and appears to no longer work. I just unplugged the ac charger from the wall and let it sit for a couple hours and it seems to work after that.

Wow. . . I had my cable bundled up and ready to RMA when I read your post. Just plugged it in, and it works again. Good to know. . .

Great, I just bought a 1005ha. Hope to never see that happen.

I have had my 1005HA for just over 30 days, and this just happened to me. I found this post by searching for the power supply...which I can't find anywhere just like y'all.
After hearing your fix, I thought I would try a much faster approach. Throw the power supply in the fridge (NOT the freezer), after just a couple minutes, you'll be back to running smooth.
Why would this work? Well alot of cheapo power supplies like this one use thermally sensitive "fuses" (PTC) to keep the device coming back alive after over-temp failures. This worked like a charm for me, and I bet it will for you too. I wouldn't do this unless your fridge is just moderately cold...thermal cycling causes components to flex and eventually they'll fail, but power supplies typically don't have many components that can flex much so I don't have any problem doing it in a pinch (or if just leaving it alone in ambient temp didn't do the trick for you)
Happy computing

Yeah I just got my 1005HA and when I charged it ...I thought the power supply was going to melt...it was so hot. Once it charged and was on AC power is seemed to cool off a bit. Either the wattage is too low for the consumption ..or it needs a cooling fan.
We need to find a replacement that will last many cycles. The samsung NC10 I believe uses the same voltage and amps but not sure about the connector. Does anyone know what size the connector is on our 1005ha? 1.5mm maybe? I know its small. Im even willing to cut off the connector and solder them to a new power supply if needed. Just want a dependable power supply that will not catch on fire if left alone.

Yes finding a replacement/additional charger for this unit is tough!! Anyone found a store yet?

Ugh. Woke up this morning and noticed my 1005ha not taking a charge.... is there a theme here? I'm trying the fridge thing now, but not holding out much hope as the adapter wasn't hot, and didn't even give me a light when plugged in. Bought it a month ago....
A little off-topic: After I contacted Newegg.com, (where I bought it) and chatted with a rep about it, they offered to either replace the eee (no thanks, as I just got it all set up with win7) OR credit me $25 (unfortunately they do not carry an adapter).

Just found this replacement adapter on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ASUS-Eee-1005HA-100 … 52007r8185
$18.49 with free shipping.
I just ordered one so it should be interesting to see how it works out.

I bought mine about a month ago. Found the adapter dead about an hour ago and found this thread. It had been plugged in overnight and I didn't know it had tripped until a message popped up that said I was running on battery. After being unplugged for about 30 minutes in an ambient temperature of about 75 degrees, it began working again.
While I'm not happy to make this discovery, at least it seems to be easily remedied. I think we all should pressure Asus to come up with a unit that doesn't have this weakness.

This just happened to me also.......of course I happen to be in Japan on business and this happening for the first time did not help my jetlag at all.
This is unacceptable from Asus. No one should except this issue. I will be contacting them when I get a chance. They will be replacing mine. And if it happens again I demand a buy back. If I read about this issue before...I would not have purchased this netbook. I have been buying Asus motherboards for years...some are great...others are buggy as hell and I get rid of them. I am not impressed so far with my purchase.
Ok....I feel better now.....thanks for listening.

Two weeks? How about....let's see...got it Thursday....FOUR DAYS.
No light whatsoever. I unplugged it and I'm gonna let it sit for a while, per the advice in this thread, but I'm pretty damned upset right now.

Received the power adapter I ordered from eBay and so far it looks good (ref my post on 8/15). It is just a little larger than the Asus original unit and uses a two prong power cord (the eBay ad indicates a three prong) which I consider a big plus. The connector tip to the computer is a little longer than the Asus original so when inserted the connector plastic body is not flush with the computer case but for me a minor issue.
The adapter has a small green power indicator that is much more subtle (does not serve dual purpose as a night light) than the Asus adapter anothe plus for me.

I had mine new 1005HA for all of 2 hours before my AC adapter crapped out...Going to try to unplug and see if it works in the morning

I should post my epilogue in all fairness: I unplugged mine, let it sit for an hour or so, tried it again, and it's worked ever since. So that one incident might have just been a weird circumstance.

Yes the same damn thing happened to me after 15 days. I purchased mine at Canada Computer and they where excellent. They told me I have 15 days for a straight exchange but I was 3 hrs from their closest store on the 15th day so I was unable to exchange. I let the ac adapter sit for a few hours and it worked! This has happened to me twice so far. I now set a heatsink from an old computer on top of it becuz it does run warm. This is a definite problem that Asus needs to address with a recall.

The refrigeration advice WORKS! Thank you so much jdcrosby for that suggestion. I left it in there for a good 10-15 minutes before it re-set. I was worried because my adapter had not been plugged in for more than 12 hours - implying that advice to just let it sit at room temperature might not work in my situation.
I hope this is one off, but in any case I do intend to buy the replacement adapter for emergencies.

My power brick quit after 2 weeks also. Asus gave me an RMA with out any hassle, but say "No replacement parts expected in stock for at least a week".
I figured I was going to be Eee-less for the next couple of weeks until I found this most helpful site.
Thanks to you all I have my little baby back for at least another charge cycle. I still intend to use the RMA and return the old brick as intermittent at best.

Did they RMA you for just the charger, or the whole machine? Mine's failed once, but never since, but I'm still wary of it being faulty in and of itself as opposed to a poor design.

The RMA is for the charger only. I agree with you, I'm nervous about my chargers reliability. It runs warmer than I'd like. There are a surprising number of failures listed in this site starting August 1st so I'm not sure if this is just a defective batch or a design problem.

Well, I will be interested to know if the replacement charger they send you runs any cooler. If it does I might have to raise a bit of a ruckus myself and get mine replaced too.

refrigerator actually worked. this is a ridiculous issue i have never had with any other product, no matter how inexpensive it was. interested to see what asus can do to avoid it for us permanently.

My sister just sent me a text this morning -- hers won't turn on, the power button lights up for a second then shuts off. It sounded like the battery was almost dead to me, but she said she had it plugged in. So I come here, and I guess this is what's happening with hers. I did notice during my last visit, the brick was getting extremely hot. She expressed concern. I told her it was normal for it to get a little hot ... but not THAT hot. Seriously, she had it laying on the couch, I sat down and pressed my back to it (it managed to touch between my shirt and waistband) and it actually sorta hurt.
She's going to try the fridge thing, but seriously, that's just not an acceptable solution. Has anyone had any luck with taking the HA back to Best Buy for some sort of charger swap? Unfortunately, she's about 15 days past the 14 day return period.

Wow! I wish I had read this a month ago
. I was searching for "asus 1005ha power adapter tip" when this forum came up in Google.
I ordered my first 1005 in early August for the girlfriend. She needed a new machine desperately. The idea is that I would test drive the thing through a convention I had scheduled mid month. It was perfect for the convention due to its size and weight. Then I would know if I really wanted a netbook for myself.
A week later, the night before I go out to a convention, the power supply dies. I call ASUS, and they agree with me the power supply is dead and they will ship me a power supply. They send me paperwork to fill out. I decide to do it when I come back after the convention. In the mean time I hit Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Walmart looking for a power supply. No luck. So I didn't take the unit with me.
When I got back from the convention I go through the process of RMA and fax in the paperwork. I don't hear back from them within 72 hours. I call them and they say the part is back ordered. So I do some more online research on a replacement power supply.
I find out Kensington has a model that supports ASUS. I contact technical support for Kensington who assures me after a few emails that their tip will work for the 1005HA and the 1008HA. I order the power supply from the place with the right price.
In the mean time, I order a second 1005ha while I am at it. The week I used it before the convention had me sold. Its a great unit for the right price with all the right features (except touch screen but that that's just me going overboard!). A second one was perfect, and hopefully I won't get a bum power adapter ![]()
I received the Kensington power supply and the new 1005ha today. The picture of their M tip which they claim is the right one, and the picture of the real tip is up for display at http://www.flickr.com/photos/15319653@N05/3884813261/ . While I should have expected it, Kensington lied to me, and I am not happy about this at all. After I am done with this post I am going back to ripping them a new one in email.
In any case the idea of freezing the power supply never occurred to me. Sure enough the "broken power supply" does indeed work and is charging the laptop as I write.
And to anyone who is wondering, I still haven't received my RMA as yet. It was placed on the 18th of August.
