Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

Right now I'm running fluxflux-sl, full linux install on SD card. For the first time ever I've encountered a Linux distro that really and truly "works out of the box" big_smile

The final test today, was to set up a wifi connection with WAP/PEAP autentication/encryption. I had it running in less than 30 seconds!

Comes with GIMP2.6, OOo3.1, FF3.5, Thunderbird, Skype, Pidgin, Asunder, xine... and a lot more

Admittedly, the supply of slackware packages is limited compared to debian, but so far I haven't missed anything. And if it continues to run troublefree I'll soon give up xandros and reformat my SSD.

A heartfelt thanks to Thomas and his friends behind this!

Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

Hey I really want to give this a try but I had a problem with the grub installation. It said to unmount or mount rw the partiton and try again, the exited, but the installer itself doesnt detect this, it just proclaims the job done. So I tried to run grub-install myself.

gast@ff-sl: ~ $ sudo grub-install /dev/sdc

<snip>

Password:
Sorry, user gast is not allowed to execute '/usr/sbin//grub-install /dev/sdc' as root on ff-sl.

So what's the root password on the live-cd?

Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

If grubconfig gives the mentioned error, you inserted the wrong partition (mostly /dev/sda|b|c instead of /dev/sda|b|c|1|2|3).

The rootpassword is root, you can find it in the readme.txt ... and sudo is not allowed for any user!

su -
root
grubconfig

would be the correct way.

But be aware, that you will have no bootsplash and no boot to init 4, if you run grubconfig outside the installer!

Hi Flux thanks for the answer!

fluxflux wrote:

OK. I dont remember the exact wording but I remember the installer said something about using /dev/sdc NOT /dev/sdcx. So I am betting you are right on what happened.

The rootpassword is root,

Doh! Thought I had tried that. Thanks.

Thomas.

Dont care about the bootsplash, and runlevel 2 is fine, so thanks again!

Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

I never saw such a message, neither with CD-boot nor with USB-boot ...

Please check the md5sum of the ISO and/or burn a new CD.

You can always boot to init 3 (remove the option autoexec=telinit~4 at the bootprompt, you can reach the line by pressing TAB), login as root/root and then type 'init 4' ...

I've had the same message after having tried to 'gnomify' flux-flux-sl and borked everything in fact .
Couldn't do anything, so had to reinstall all.

Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

Well I booted to level 3 as suggested, got grubconfig working, at least it seemed to be.

On reboot it doesnt work because the (hdx) stuff is all different, I hit c and mess around in grubs command line for a bit and get it to boot.

However:

md: ... autorun DONE.
VFS: Cannot open root device "sdc2" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option: here are the available partitions:
0800    3907512 sda driver:sd
0801    2409718 sda1
0802    1477980 sda2
0803         8032 sda3
0804         8032 sda4
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Dumping ftrace buffer:
(ftrace buffer empty)

So... I recognise that partition layout, that's the internal SSD. It's normally sda but seems to become sdb when I select boot from SD card? The SD card is normally sdb, but sdc when booted from the live disk, and seems to become sda when I select boot from it? But at any rate I know I had the right partition when I started the boot - the kernel file is named differently on the SSD. So I am really confused at this point.

Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

You didn't use the installer to setup grub and to adjust the menu.lst to your external bootmedium, right?

With one internal hdd or sdd the bootprocess from an external bootmedium is working without any changes!

Now I shall fix things which are done by the installer itself? I have no information how many SSDs there are in your eeePC ... I have no information about your /boot/grub/menu.lst ...

I have not been able to boot the live cd on my Eeepc 701.  I get to this same point and achieve the same results as the user who originally posted this message.  I tried booting the desktop version on a plain vanilla desktop pc with 2.69Ghz Intel Celeron and 1GB RAM but live cd hung up and displayed the following message:

starting autoexec command: su --login -c "telinit 4"

The display would flicker on and off periodically but the system did not resume boot up.  Too bad.  I was looking forward to using it after sampling the PCLinuxOS based eeepc version of FluxFlux.  Your meticulous attention to detail and tightly integrated package made it a delightful experience.

Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

The md5sum of the ISO is ok? Which ISO did you boot (version)? The ISO was burned with max. 4x speed?

If you can give me the exact version (snapshot or 2009.1) I check the integrated modules to make sure that there is no corrupted module in the ISO!

Celeron: The video driver was not detected correctly. You can use xorgmaker to switch to the correct video driver. Boot to init 3 (remove the option autoexec=telinit~4 by pressing TAB at the bootprompt), then log in as root/root and type 'xorgmaker' and configure your video driver. Then boot on with 'init 4'. If there is no success (e. g. SIS graphic), then use the 'vesa' driver in xorgmaker.

eeePC: I boot an eeepc 701 here without any problem, I can repeat this 100x or more ...

Thomas.

P. S.: I just downloaded the latest snapshot (en_US), burned it to a DVD, bootet the DVD with an external DVD-drive and the eeePC and no problem at all ... I will try it again with the release 2009.1 and the latest lzm ...

P. P. S.: I checked all available possibilities with the same result: the ISOs are ok, no lzm is corrupted. The error message cannot be reproduced here! It must be due to a bad burn or a corrupted download or a bad formatted or not syncronised USB drive before running the bootinst.* script (here I have bad experiences with unetbootin!!!) ...

And here you find a description of xorgmaker and the possibilities to boot a preferred video configuration, if the livesystem will stop with a black screen/display --> http://lin2go.com/forum/index.php/topic,226.0.html

It is the stable version http://mirror.live-modules.org/quax/flu … 2009.1.iso

Since my last post I downloaded and burned it again.  Same outcome.  The eeepc version wil not boot on my eeepc 701 4g with web cam.  Same error as described above.  I did try it on an Acer 5050 laptop.  It booted the live version nicely ( I liked it very much).  I installed it to hard drive as a real linux install.  It did not want to let me log in.  Failed to accept the password that I just created during the installation process.

By the way it was a 4 hour download each time on a high speed broad band connection.

Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

From what I read I understand that you've burnt a cd and have tried to install from that. Have you tried skipping the cd bit and instead making a bootable USB stick?

I've done that twice (the 20090719 and the 20090720 editions), in both cases by mounting the iso on my eee, copying the files to a fat32 formatted usb stick and made it bootable (on a XP machine) by running the file bootinst_fat.bat - see also http://mirror.live-modules.org/quax/flu … -drive.txt

I've had no problems with runnig the live version or doing full installs (both on SD and on my ssd)

Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

I have a question about the kernel. It says

Customkernel from Quax: 2.6.28

,
Is this some kernel like Adams lean kernel from the ubuntu stuff that was especially compiled for eeepcs? Was the PCLOS based fluxflux a custom kernel too? It seems quite lean and fast.

Re: fluxflux-sl * livesystem with installer * based on Slackware 12.2

Neither the kernel in fluxflux-eee nor in fluxflux-sl are kernels compiled for the eeePC. Both kernels are designed to work on the most cpus and compiled for a i486 architecture to run even on older Pentium processors (MMX and newer).

The fluxflux-eee was a standard PCLinuxOS kernel recompiled for i486 (.22). The fluxflux-sl kernel is a heavily patched .28 kernel compiled for i486.

No, no Gnome, quax's favors KDE, I prefer Openbox.

Therefore two releases. At the end of the year we will talk about Slackware 13.0 or 13.1 as base ...

Following your link, Thomas,  ( http://mirror.live-modules.org/quax/index.php?dir= ) , I can see that there are some Gnome 2.26 packages in the mirror; are they usable with flux-flux-sl or lin2go, or both?

These packages are usable with both, I think they were built with a dependency check with requiredbuilder, but I am not sure about the last part of my answer.
