Hey all,
There isn't any place on the forums for the T91, so I am going to post this in general.
I'm going to use this thread to post about my experience with the T91, in case you are interested.
If you aren't, then there are thousands of other threads here to interest you.
The general idea is to use this as a pilot unit for two reasons: Datalogging in my car and the possibility of mobile kiosks for our retail showroom employees. I'll also probably try using it as a bookreader compared against my Kindle2.
---------------------
I ordered this from BuyDig. I've never placed an order with them, and was a bit freaked out when they pulled the T91 off the website. After calling, they assured me that the order would ship the next day, and it did. I hate waiting, so I got it overnight.
It came in as planned.
The packaging was a bit weird to me. It had a tamper-proof seal, but the computer itself was simply packaged in its case, no bag surrounding it. This must be Asus' way of being green. How quaint.
The glossy case smudges easily. No surprise there.
Ugh....Energy Saver, Intel, Windows Stickers aplenty. Off they go! Looks like I'll need some cleaner to get the sticky off though. awesome.
Bootup is pretty standard. This is replacing my 701 so the feel of boot, etc. is the same.
15 second cold boot on IE from Desktop.
Ever so slight give in the keyboard on typing in the middle.
Windows still doesn't get Netbooks. Standard IE has a bar for Addresses, Menu, Windows Live, and Tabs by default. 30% of the screen is just gone.
Speaking of more bloat, Desktop starts with 13 icons and 14 Menu Icons.
Screen Resolution has an option for 1024x768. Its terrible looking. I'm gonna have to try the Util and see if it'll work later (before trying Windows 7).
Hey look I can install Chrome! Cold Boots are about the same, but it comes up the second time much faster. Tab Bar and Address Bar only too....Maybe Ballmer can take notes when he receives his beta copy of the Chrome OS, hmm?
Five Minutes and TweakUI later, I have a recycle bin, one icon visible in my tray, and a Netbook worth using now.
Next: Usage. I'll keep you all posted.

Crappiest sticky to remove and keep your EEEPC looking clean goes to Intel.
It left most of its glue behind, and required a ridiculous amount of scrubbing to remove even using Simple Green.
I've also found the Stylus located the the front bottom of the computer. It slides out and has a springy action. It also telescopes into itself presumably so you can be less embarrassed about having to use said stylus. ![]()

As a Kiosk, this might work. But as a functional tablet, this thing may be hopelessly gimped.
Right-click functionality from a touchscreen perspective is absolutely gimped. The software doesn't work (don't even know which program is trying to power it) because I'm not a brain surgeon and my hands have a slight wobble. We're talking a few pixels here.
I've got to find a better solution.
Touchgate is also slow to open but looks pretty when it is. Too bad I hate it and wish it would die. I hate programs that choose what's best for me without letting me edit them handily. Of course, I haven't really tried yet. ![]()

Don't get me wrong, I'm just journaling what I see.
I tend to always assess the bad before good. Lemme see what I can drum up here. ![]()

Some good:
The build quality on this thing is fantastic. The screen feels sturdier on its swivel than my Palm Pre does when it slides. They definitely got this right.
The touchscreen has a good sensitivity. I can draw an accurate smiley face and my signature looks better than any of those terribad credit card machines.
I've been using Touchgate for a few minutes and its not bad at all. In fact, its pretty good. But its built for a higher end video card it feels like, and the inability to customize it is something that I will dread. Forcing me into IE isn't going to win my heart.
In all honesty, I'm tremendously impressed with this and will certainly be able to find a use for it. It also puts to bed any reservations I will have about a multi-touch being a best seller.
This has every feature I wanted on a Netbook since before the term Netbook was being used, but unfortunately all the blemishes of a first gen product.

I'm getting more handy with this, but I definitely need the right click functionality to be faster in touchscreen. Touchstylus (The keyboard) is ok, and will certainly serve its purpose.
Time to abandon Chrome for Firefox. My past Kiosk recommendations here: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=68219 are going to be useful here, to give me a touch sensitive Firefox.

does it run off 12v or 19v?
thx-

12v 3a 36w according to the back.
IM typing this on the touchscreen. getting more used to the unit, butif this is to become the replacement for tablets, we got our work cut out for us.
there is a config file in the folder for the ideacom 2k.6.0.8 drivers for the touchscreen. i wonder if there is anything useful...

Id recommend doing a fresh install of a stripped down XP without all the drama apps.

thanks for the tip.
biggest problem still is right click. it works but it takes too long.

Will Caltouch work to edit the speed of the right click? I mean use default driver and try this utility. http://rapidshare.com/files/174567408/C … 4.zip.html

This is something that has been absolutely consistent across the eee line and Asus' other offerings in the last 2 years. They totally know how to build things. The 701 was top-notch sturdy (especially for its price). No surprise then, that the T91 feels so well made.

Would any T91 user on here be willing to extract their "Touchgate" software and upload it, There may be an installer exe on the recovery dvd.
Many thanks, Joe

2 questions
Is it multitouch?
Like with MS paint, you can draw with 2 fingers at the same time and it will not only register 1?
and does it have GPS?
never mind i found out,
it has none of both, i just found out there is going to be a T91GO
With 3G for internet everywhere, GPS and multitouch.
Ill have to wait for that model i guess...

It boots in 15 seconds? Must have a super duper fast SSD.

As a "Kiosk" it will probably get stolen.

15 seconds: that actually meant from the desktop, it took ie 15 seconds to load. chrome and ff are much faster.
kiosk: we're hoping to use the eeetops mounted to the walls as customer kiosks and the t91s as shareable handhelds wielded by our salespeople.
im also going to scour the planet looking for some sort of barcode scanner to mate to the unit. if anyone has any ideas, please share :-)
multitoucch: yup, no mt on t91 which kills it long term for windows 7. I just had to get the t91 to pilot the project and see how touchscreens work for our projects.

I found a barcode creator, which makes use of the webcam on a PC...
You can take a pic of your item, and it will make a barcode for it, or something similar...
i can get you a link if you'd like

that'd be great dom!
I tried the caltouch software and it does not recognize the ideacom touchscreen drivers.
I'm focusing right now on the config file for the driver. I need to figure out how to minimize drift and increasing "right click" speed:
[TSCSETTINGS]
SelectiveSuspend = 0
VistaSelectiveSuspendEnable = 0
DoubleClickArea = 78
LinearCalibration = 0
MouseStabilityRange =5
MouseWeightLV =1
MouseNoMoveRange = 60
RbtnHolding_Index_St1 = 50
RbtnHolding_Index_St2 = 125
AvoidWrongTouchType = 0
CaValidRange = 200
CaValidPointX00 = 300
CaValidPointX01 = 2050
CaValidPointX02 = 3810
CaValidPointX03 = 300
CaValidPointX04 = 2050
CaValidPointX05 = 3810
CaValidPointX06 = 300
CaValidPointX07 = 2050
CaValidPointX08 = 3810
CaValidPointX09 = 0
CaValidPointY00 = 350
CaValidPointY01 = 350
CaValidPointY02 = 350
CaValidPointY03 = 2050
CaValidPointY04 = 2050
CaValidPointY05 = 2050
CaValidPointY06 = 3780
CaValidPointY07 = 3780
CaValidPointY08 = 3780
CaValidPointY09 = 0

Here, Ever heard of TinkerNut?
Well he created a video of how to make barcodes, i didnt find a use for them, but maybe you will?
He has a complete tutorial video...
Basically you create barcodes for things around your home/office...
You can just glue them to the object, or whatever need be...
Then you use your webcam to scan those barcodes into an online database, and keep track of what you own...
Let me know if it was any help, interested to see if you use it, or find it usefull

Mmm... quick experiment: what happens when you put two of your fingers on the screen? Does the cursor jump to a point in between your finger taps, or does it stay with only one finger? If it stays on one finger then does it snap to the other one when you remove the finger that it's staying at?
Offline
thats weird that it doesnt come with configurable touchscreen software. my umid mbook came with the same stock touchscreen software as my touchscreen for my eee 901.. did u check control panel -> mouse and devices?

The cursor jumps to a center point, then fluctuates in distance between the two as if it were trying to decide which input had priority.
If I apply more pressure to one finger over another, the cursor begins to lean that way.
What does this tell you?
As for the barcode software, we have all the products in our showroom already barcoded, its just finding something that passes the scanned Code 39 (I think) to our ERP system when we implement it.
Barcode scanners just pass the decoded code as keyboard input, so having a program to read them would make it somewhat useless in our environment, but all options are still of interest. ![]()

Congrats on the T91. I am not sure if you are ready to take it apart, but I am just wondering if you could upgrade the SSD and what option do we have? Is it 50mm or 70mm SSD?
Is there an empty PCIe slot inside, since I assume that is for the 3G/GPS module for the later model.
