Hello,
I just bought a second hand eee 901 with 12 G of space, which is not enough off course.
I did read a lot about de JKK zif mini pci to zif adapter and everything there is to read, but I am getting lost in the information overload.
What i want is more harddisk space I dont care if it is ssd or hdd as long as it fits and works and it has to be cheap.
I am currently looking on ebay for 1.8 " hdd. But can I only use the Toshiba 2008GAL or also hitachi or samsung?
Do i need the zif drive or can I also use pci to sata or ide? I dont have a zif connector on my mainboard so I do nead the pci adapter anyways.
BUT than again why not buy a ssd flash drive with minipci connector.
Because If i can only use the toshiba 30 gb 2008GAL zif drive why not buy a 30 gb ssd flash drive with mini pci connection?!!?
or are these things to slow and how fast is 1.8" hdd 4200 rpm is that much faster than ssd???
if anybody want's to explain.... i thank you very much.
sincerely,
jan

I'm looking to upgrade too, looks like we're gonna need axes, as woodsmen seem quite scarce around here ![]()

Search the forum for postings on the RunCore SSD. It is available in several sizes and makes a huge difference. I installed the 32GB RunCore in place of my original 8GB drive. I documented the steps I took to do so. Somewhere in my postings you will find the info.

Tukatz is right. There is lots of info on upgrading the secondary drive. I put in a Runcore 32gb SATA ssd. Its speedy, and reliable. I hear that the Supertalent Sata drive is good too. They cost around $125 and are very easy to install. Cloning your os is an extra step that you don't really need to do. In my case, I took the new drive as an excuse to try out different linux distros. Oh Yeah, be sure to upgrade the bios to the latest version, to get the machine torecognize a SATA drive.
There probably are hdd's you could get for the 901, but I can't imagine why you would want that. An ssd runs cooler, is faster and less vulnerable to damage from bumps. And with the sd card reader, storage space isn't really an issue in these little machines.

You aren't limited to a ZIF hard drive, they have solid state 1.8" drives as well and you can get a Mini PCIe to SATA+USB adapter to connect it, though the 1.8" would use a mini-SATA connector but a simple adapter works and you'll just need to set a dedicated 5v power molex for it. Another topic even covers modding the case to accept a 2.5" drive. . .
As for reasons, what is enough capacity for you is not necessarily enough for everyone. For example a large video collection for those who like to entertain themselves on the run would require quite a bit of space even using lower resolution copies.

as i understand it the 1.8" zif hdd mod was the first solution to disk space in the small asus 3e models, involving the use of a onboard zif connector (attached on some models/ soldered on by skilled modders when not ).
This fix predated the release initially by Runcore of compatable upgrade ssd's which require 4 screws to be undone and redone up to install, (no dismanteling or soldering) 2 screws on the hatch, 2 more securing the secondary ssd you would be replaceing.
while sourcing pci-e to ide or sata converter board may be possible, the pci-e interface in our asus 3e's is not 100% industry standard afaik.. and such cards would need to be cut down and modded in order to install within the case... see the 701 cfcard mods for board hacking..
While not cheap, the runcore/supertalent... upgrade ssd's are the route of least hassle in upgrading the storage, just ensure that the one you opt for is asus 3e pci-e complient
also opt for the sata models as runcore pata ssd's of 32gb+ are power hungry and cause system crashes when Asus SHE drops into low power mode..
as an early adopter of the runcore upgrade ssd I can vouch for it being VERY WORTHWHILE

I just installed the Super Talent 32 gig FPM32GRSE and it works great for me. Not that into it to do the speed testing but so far no issues. Got it on newegg. Lots of user reviews for that model on there.
