I'm a brand new member of the eeeuser.com forum. My 1005HA is in transit now and should be here in a week or so. The first question I have before I even get the machine is this:
Does anyone have a step-by-step guide to upgrading the RAM to 2GB? I know I've seen it somewhere on the internet before but can't seem to locate it again. I realize it is a simple procedure on the 1005HA, but I obviously want to ensure I do it correctly so that the system recognizes the upgrade and doesn't give me any problems.
Secondly, I see that Amazon is recommending the Crucial 2GB 667 Mhz CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM upgrade. However, when I run the Memory Upgrade Advisor on the Crucial.com website, I get the following recommendation:
Memory Upgrade for the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA Netbook
2GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-6400 memory module CT1001597
• Module Size: 2GB
• Package: 200-pin SODIMM
• Feature: DDR2 PC2-6400
• Specs: DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64
I've been a longtime fan of Crucial and have found its recommendations to be quite reliable in RAM upgrades I've performed on other systems. However, I am new to the "netbook world" and would very much appreciate the input of you that know the facts regarding this information. I'm leaning towards going with Crucial's recommendation since they are experts in this arena. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your input!

Hi waterburyr,
Very simple process as there is a panel on the bottom of the 1005HA, just unscrew and pop the panel off and open the the clips holding the ram stick in place, it will the move upwards to remove and replace with the 2GB stick. Just line up the stick correctly in the slot, push in to seat and it slides down a bit, the clips snap back into the place, place panel back on and screw. Boot up and hit F2, go into BIOS and should recognize the new RAM, reporting it as such. save and exit and you are all set.
I went with the Crucial DDR2 PC2-6400 800 Mhz (CT1001597), it will step down to 667 Mhz until you want to overclock ![]()

Thanks for the rapid response JazzDoc. It sounds pretty much like a standard RAM upgrade; I've just never dealt with anything as small as the netbook scale before, but I suppose it's all the same. The BIOS check is the information I was really looking for. I appreciate it! Speaking of which; I just checked the ASUS Support website earlier today and see that they already have BIOS updates for the 1005HA. is that routine for them to come out so quick after the release of a product? And secondly, is it recommended to routinely use the BIOS Update utility that the 1005HA has? I know my fair share about computers but not when it gets down to that level. Any info you or others might be able to provide will be greatly appreciated. On a side note, I see in your "signature" that you have the blue 1005HA. I also opted for the blue machine and am completely aware that it is a "finger magnet." Do you have any recommendations on where to look for good "skins" to buy for this system? Also, noted that you have a dual boot with XP and Windows 7. Was that difficult to pull off and how does the 1005HA handle it? I was thinking of going a route similar to that but was unaware of how and if this system could accommodate it since I understand netbooks are more for portability as opposed to major computing.
Thanks again for any insight you might be able to offer. It will go to good use and is greatly appreciated!

waterburyr, my personal experience with ASUS desktop and server motherboards is that they have always been quick to BIOS updates when bugs are found. But it's not like we should expect a monthly update for the 1005HA, as least I don't expect that.
My habit has always been to check the manufacturer's site for drivers and BIOS updates on a regular basis especially with a new product release and taper off checking regularly as time goes on. I prefer visiting the site rather than using the update utility to check since it only checks for BIOS updates and not for other drivers. I think as this site grows, we could see a "sticky" when there is a new BIOS.
As far as skins, I have looked at http://www.decalgirl.com/ and pretty cheap and also looked at http://www.3acp.com/3acp.htm which is more expense but I like their selection better. Also they have the option to do a custom skin set so I might go that route. There is also ebay, which I have not looked on yet.
Regarding the dual boot, it's as easy as creating dual boot on a desktop. I found the easiest way was to do it via a 4GB flash drive. I used a great tutuoral as I had never done an OS install via a flash drive. See my post here: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php? … 72#p605972
I have been running Win 7 on my desktop for a while and LOVE it and it runs so nice on my 1005HA and all the functions specific to the 1005HA run fine after installing all the drivers. The only drivers from ASUS I did not install were the wifi and bluetooth as Win 7's drivers work fine for me.
I have loaded Office 2007, Acrobat Pro 8, and Photoshop CS3 (for low dpi stuff) and the performance is fine.
I will remove XP in a couple weeks once I have everything running fine under Win 7.
The 1005HA will fit my needs for business travel and leisure instead of not having to take my Dell D620 on the road even though it is not too bad weight wise, I love the netbook smallness factor.
Let us know once you have your 1005HA and upgraded!

JazzDoc,
Thanks for the info on the memory. Just ordered my 1005 and want to have the 2gig stick ready when it gets here. I see you are also in SoCal. Where did you pick up the memory.
Thanks,

Hi Jim,
I ordered it at Fry's online for Fountain Valley store pickup, $24. With memory I rather get it local as easier to return if bad. More of a hassle to return to an online store. Microcenter in Tustin has it for $30, order online do store pickup. Don't know what is up your way other than the Fry's in the South Bay.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that option. Ordering on line and picking up at the store. I have been wanting to visit the Microcenter store so this sounds like a good excuse.

Is this the proper one? It has a different part # but looks like the specs are the same.

Yep, that's the model CT25664AC800. Same exact specs at the CT1001597.
You won't have a problem.
I also bought a couple Inland 4 Port USB hub sticks as they are only $5 and work great as well as being nice and compact

Wow! That's a fantastic response. I greatly appreciate all the input. Once I receive my 1005HA, I will do as you suggest regarding the routine BIOS and driver update checks on the manufacturer's website. That seems like the smartest way to go initially to stay updated. With respect to the dual booting, I have another question. The link you provided is phenomenal and very user-friendly. Thanks for that! It provides a great step-by-step on installing Windows 7 to the ASUS. My question is this: By following this method, will the Windows 7 OS be put somewhere that makes it available for a dual boot or does it overwrite the WinXP OS that already is present? I realize that sounds silly, but as stated previously, I'm not too experienced at this type of stuff. My intention is to get a dual boot system...eventually a LINUX-based and Windows 7 on my 1005HA. Can this machine accommodate that? And if so, are there any special instructions I need to follow above and beyond the tutorial you provided via the link to get this up and running? I'm not too worried about crashing the machine because I know that ASUS comes with a pre-loaded recovery tool. In addition, I've crashed several machines before in attempts to do different things, and I look upon it as staying in practice when it becomes necessary to go through the steps of recovery. My fears are doing something wrong that jeopardizes even the recovery process. If there is a possibility of me screwing that up, forget it; I'll leave the machine alone. However, in my experience, messing up the recovery part of the machine seems difficult to do unless it is done intentionally. It seems to be locked away pretty safely for the exact reason of screw-ups, LMAO.
Also, thanks for noting some of the software you have loaded up on the 1005HA. I had been wondering how performance is affected by the Microsoft Office 2007 applications. Question...are you just running the basics such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; or do you also have some of the more "power-hungry" apps such as Visio, Access, and Project running as well. The reason I ask is because I own Microsoft Office Enterprise, which has all of them, but I certainly don't want to "kill" the machine by putting apps on there that it can't handle. Afterall, I only bought it as a "basic" system to run "basic" apps, but of course I will try to get as much out of it as I can since, like you, would rather use it for my business travels than my Dell.
Once again, all your input is greatly appreciated!

waterburyr,
There are no silly questions. We all have to go through learning!
The 1005HA comes with split partition. In XP you will see C and D. When you go to install Win7, just follow the screens and select where you want to have it install (thus on the empty partition). You will then have a dual boot. I also plan to install an EEE flavor of Linux on my system. I will be diving into the various Linux forums here to find out what flavor of Linux will be best for me and you may want to do the same thing.
Can't break a system by just installing different OS's and that's part of the fun is installing different OS's! Before I do that and remove XP and also the recovery partition, I will use Acronis True Image Home 2009 to make an image of the Win 7 partition. Also you can recovery from the included DVD that is shipped with the unit (it also includes all the drivers, of which most are current.)
I haven't installed any of the apps you mentioned as I very rarely use them. Install them and see how they preform, If too resource intensive, just remove them.

Sounds great! Thanks again for all the great information!
I just received my Crucial 2GB 667 Mhz CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM memory upgrade in the mail today and my Logitech V470 Bluetooth Cordless Mouse on Monday. All I need now is the computer to get here so I can get into it. Unfortunately (well, not really cuz I love it here, lol), I live overseas in Germany since I work for the government. With that in mind, it obviously takes a little longer for products I order online to get here. I'm being patient (yeah right, lol) and hope to have my new 1005HA in my hands by the end of this week or early part of next week. Once I get it and start messing with it, I'll be sure to post back here for more "insider help."
Thanks again!

Hello group:
Good discussion going here. Lots of great info. I just ordered my 1005 HA-P due to the reviews in forums and the review on CNET.com. Looks like the best netbook at the best price on the market.
1 big question. I'm quite confused about the 2GB RAM upgrade. I order the Crucial 667 mhz unit from Amazon, but it seems like a lot of the feedback suggests moving up to 800mhz or another product.
What is the ideal 2GB RAM upgrade for this netbook. Is there a 1000mhz model for the 1005 HA???
Thanks for the feedback

I think 800mhz is the highest that will work. Unless u OC or something you won't see the difference since the 800mhz gets stepped down to 667mhz. There wasn't that huge of a price difference so I when with the 800mhz. If I am wrong please someone correct me. ![]()

standard memory came with the package is 1GB PC6400 800Mhz
so if u'll upgrade, get the 800Mhz, although 667 will work just fine
read from expert in internet, 800 usage was intended to avoid bottleneck
during the Super Performance Mode which the fsb oc-ed

My instruction manual specifically states that I have to disable the "boot booster" before I make any modifications or upgrades to the computer. Then you have to re-enable it following the upgrade. Nobody mentions this, why?

One of three answers ![]()
1) I guess we assume people do read the manual.
2) Simply forgot to outline exact handholding steps from A to Z.
3) It's mentioned in a number of threads (a search will list the threads).
No harm will come if one forgets to disable Boot Booster. It may not pick up the change in memory until one goes back into the BIOS, see if it is recognized and disable Boot Booster after the fact so that a full POST (self test) can take place, that includes testing the new RAM stick.

I disabled boot booster after the first boot, and left it that way.
As a last step I always run memtest before calling it a successful upgrade.
