OK TIME FOR MY REVIEW:
![]()

This is CMS, showing the common user that it is possible to have a tablet pc without spending tons of money on a tablet laptop or getting your hands dirty disassembling your EEE (& voiding the warrenty), just to install an internal touchpannel that is not nearly as versitile as this solution. Duo is a solution that is a flagship to emerging consumer technologies hitting the market. It is not even sold in America yet, but here I am to tell you that, when it comes to technology, this item is (as well stated here) "a gadget that I never knew I needed or knew existed until now"
________________________
What is DUO?
________________________
Duo is a device that uses some common technologies mixed together to make a new piece of technology:
1.) a stereo microphone array - like our ears, 2 microphones allow the device to pinpoint the locations of sound. (you can see these little microphones on the silvery nubs on the sides of the clip.)
2.) ultrasonic pulse emission and capture (the capture is incorporated into the microphones to only recognize this ultrasonic sound, the emission technology is incorporated into the pen)
Now you have a pen that emits ultrasonic pulses, and because of the microphones, the device can pinpoint the location of the pen, and forward this information to the computer
3.) Infrared, Just like a remote control, the pen emits infrared pulses when the tip of the pen touches a surface or the clicking buttons are pressed.
4) Rising uses for tablet applications as more people are using Tablet PC's , vista and win7 now come preloaded with tablet "plug and play capabilities"
It was only a matter of time before the correct drivers and software were made to support a lightweight, low cost solution to having tablet capabilities
, Thus DUO was created

DUO PEN by PNF

Whats included:
It was purchased on Ebay for a total of 70 bucks from a seller who was so lucky enough to get a pallet of these things from korea.
What is included:
- The Duo Pen and extra tips (both plastic nobs and pen tips) http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55 … C01786.jpg
*note that the nobs are quite similar to a dried up permanent marker tip, and that the pen has the right and left mouse click buttons just like on a mouse, (in addition to recognizing when you press the pen on a surface)
- Some mounting gear, This includes the mounting magnet and some little foam stoppers to fine tune your mounting (I didn't use any because the magnet worked fine, but I guess on different laptops they help)
- Some user guides and installation CD (not shown)
- extra Batteries and nob carrying case (how thoughtful of them ![]()

Installation
________________________
This is what the Duo system looks like on my EEE1000he. The Drivers, Software and user manuals were made in English, so I did not have to fumble with any korean to install this device. It was quite simple:
1.) Find the little packaged magnet and place it on your computer, (I suggest using some tape to "trial test" the placement of your magnet before you enable the adhesive guard on the bottom and make the mount more permanent)
You can see the magnet here: http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55 … C01788.jpg
I ended up placing my magnet just above the middle left side so that the device is out the way both when drawing and when the unit is flipped on its side. (as shown here: http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55 … C01793.jpg) also it is placed in such a way that it does not clash with anything when I close the lid: http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55 … C01802.jpg
2.) As most netbook users have realized, install CD's are frustrating when your netbook does not have a CD drive. This can by bypassed easily by just using a thumdrive and a computer with a CD drive to copy all the files on the miniCD and transfer them to the thumbdrive. Once done you can install all the drivers and calibration software to use DUO.
3.) Plug it in an Calibrate it:
_______________________
Calibrating Duo
_______________________
Upon Installing the necessary software, you will notice (after restarting) that a new icon will appear in the notification area called "PENonPC", From here you can access two setting pannels, the Calibration pannel and the settings panel
(PENonPC->Adjust working area) is the calibration panel, here you can specify the approximate size of the working area and Screen sizes, upon hitting ok, you will be asked to calibrate your pen by pressing in the center and sides of the screen. Unfortunately for EEE series, the system cannot automatically detect what size screen is on the EEE, so you need to specify that your screen is a 9~12in screen ![]()
See the Calibration Panel here: http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55 … led-35.jpg
(PENonPC->Options) is the settings panel, I actually suggest going here first before calibrating your screen so that you can show the orientation of the device: http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55 … led2-1.jpg
Note that you need to specify whether it is on the right, left or top of the screen, The other options only affect the strokes in the "Duo Annotator" app, so you do not need to mess with them ![]()

this is pretty interesting, however, i think it takes away a mobility aspect that many people are attracted to (Bulky/unyieldy usb thing hanging off the top)
But hey, its a great solution to those who dont want to open up their computer, or want the added tablet features.

it is less obtrusive than a mouse though
, it is detachable and considered an accessory ![]()
I like it because it will work as an artists tablet too like shown:
Plus unlike a touchscreen, the mouse will follow your pen even if its not touching the screen ![]()

Finally, I got it in the mail, My first impression after I have used it is that it works flawlessly, I am very impressed.
I am even impressed by the fact that it works like a wii remote too ![]()
I will be doing a full review promptly ![]()
No setting changes necessary when screen orientation is changed which is amazing ![]()

I take it that one would need to have a screen protector to avoid scratches on his screen. Right?

would depend how hard you press, but might be a good idea, just a thin perspex film tucked under the bezel would do i suppose (and cheap/replaceable)
how good is the pressure sensitivity? and if you want the highest pressure level while using it on the screen, does it out much pressure on it (e.g. so it makes those funky colours all over the place
)

I bought Clear Heavy Duty Vinyl from walmart
Its better than any screenprotector Ive ever bought, (Ive compared it to Clarivue Palm and Iphone protectors) Plus it costs pennies.
1sq Yard (9square feet) = $2.00 ![]()

@cms, opinions on the pressure aspects?

The duo does not have pressure sensing technology, but it does have a visualization of pressure based on the speed of your strokes.
Im using the same pressure I would use with a pen or a pencil, with the screen protector, I am not worried about it ![]()
Im testing out the drawing cappabilities of the pen, It is nice, yet Ill still need to get used to it ![]()

that;s pretty ^-^
sounds interesting, might get one if my modding of an old laptop and a3 graphics tablet together doesn't work out
though did some research and it'll never work on my 17 inch laptop...
Offline
pnf does make a larger one for larger laptops and desktops, but the guy I bought my Duo from says he uses his on his 24 inch, but he says it does not work well at the extreme edges ![]()
Look down at the Q&A: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi … 0364126622

I found out something new, the device can lay flat, and everything can fit inside the EEE foam case ![]()
It seams allot less bulky than a mouse ![]()
Check the last pictures ![]()

could be a really nice addition if you permanenetly wire it in, like stick it to the side(or top) of the bezel, and take the wires inside to the usb hub kinda thing
*puts it on teh shopping list*

I was actually thinking about it, but I also have a 15inch power laptop that I want to use it on too ![]()

if it did 17 inch i'd stick it on my huge one, but ti wouldn't work, could always buy a second one, actually darn cheap for what it is

I found out somthing new, the "enhance pointer pressision" option in the mouse options in the control pannel, is what was messing up my pointer, the pointer always seemed to be magnetic to buttons like ok and quit and stuff, but now without enhanced pointer pressision it works even better ![]()

Hmm i guess this thingie qualifies for the title: Gadget I never knew i needed ![]()
I gotta get hold on one of them - theyre quite cheap compared to a touch screen - and the bonus of it working on my 13" is great ![]()

Well now ive ordered one form the same seller you did - just waiting for it to arrive (Wich i assume would take like a week to denmark) ^^
I was wondering what the big part of the usb male plug are for?
Cause I was thinking of some kind of mod to the eee where you make a micro usb plug on the side for instance that the reciever plugs right into. The idea is to make the eee less bulky when you use the PnF but also makes it portable for other computers - does that makes sense to you?

i know there are right angle usb plugs that you can use, The fat part of the USB is where all the circuitry for duo is, the other end is just where the IR receiver and stereo ultrasonic microphones are ![]()
if your going to connect it on the right side of the computer, use a left angle usb:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Left-angle-USB-exte … 1|294%3A50
if your going to connect it to the left side of the computer, use a right anlge usb:

No that not what i mean - i wanted to lets say cut off the usb plug and wire - then make a male micro usb plug where the wire goes into the reciever. Then make a micro usb female plug in the eee bezel where i wanted the reciever to be placed - if that makes sense to you instead ![]()
That way you could simply take it off and plug a standart usb-to-micro-usb plug to use it on another pc ![]()
However if the circuitry are placed in the bulky usb plug part it would mean quite alot more modding on the reciever ![]()

That would be alot of modding
,
and the magnet on the back does a good job of attaching the device to the bezel.
I was thinking about just making a hole through the bezle, and run the usb cord down the side of the lcd asembly, and through the hing, then just use a usb hub to wire the fat usb plug of duo down under the motherboard where everyone puts their gps and other mods
, an internal system that just has the clip part standing out ![]()

^^^If you do that definitely do a writeup for it. I think you just saved me $30 on a touch screen

I just got one on eBay for $78 plus shipping. Looking at completed auctions, one went for $60.
I found it worked best for me mounting it on the top rather than the sides of my eeePC 900A. It works fine once I got the pen calibrated. I got an 8.9" screen protector on eBay for $5.
I don't find the DUO limits the eeePC's portability. It takes a second or two to unplug the USB cable, take the sensor off the magnet, stash both in the little plastic zip bag that came with it and stash it in my computer bag.
Great device, and I would never have found it without this forum!
