The Paper Keyboard Skining Project (for 1000he)

Well here is the thread where we discus this idea I had, (inspired by Bigears metal keyboard skin)
Thread for the metal keyboard: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=64033
Brief Synapse of his product here: http://portablemonkey.com/article/keybo … pc-1000he/

Basicaly, making a template out of paper for a design that you can lay in between the keyboard keys after cutting it out.

If anyone wants to join in the project (you only need basic photoediting skills) I will provide some stuff to get started smile

Basic step one: get a template
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/SCAN0295.jpg
I scanned my 1000he keyboard, lets see what we can do smile

Step 2 - Photoshop it till you get just the template (remove the buttons)
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/photoshops.jpg
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/photoshops-1.jpg

Step 3 - deciding how to work with the skin
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/dsc013991copy-2.jpg
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/photoshops-2.jpg
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/dsc013991copy-3.jpg

Step 4 - Find out how to print it in exact dimensions (this is the tricky part)
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/Untitled-2-1.jpg
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/Untitled-2-2.jpg
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/Untitled-2-3.jpg
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/Untitled-2-4.jpg
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc55/CMStudio/Untitled-2-5.jpg

Every printer is different, so change the % and margins when you print to match your keyboard
Cut out the green with an exacto knife.
Enjoy, (hopefully I got it right tongue )

Remember, this skin is less durable than BigEar's metal skins, If you want something more durable and professionaly cut with laser cutters visit the links I provided at the beginning wink

No problem smile

I think the paper project is good because many people may use the paper one as a "test" to see what color they want

because paper will get nasty and wears out easily, I bet many people will opt to buy your higher quality product in the color they found smile

Re: The Paper Keyboard Skining Project (for 1000he)

Very cool, thanks alot Cms!, when i get home from work today ill print out a copy and get out the xacto knife smile

Also a suggestion, you can get better quality high gloss photo paper to make this as well. It would prolly hold up better than just regular printer paper.

Ill post pics of finished product when im done. tongue

Re: The Paper Keyboard Skining Project (for 1000he)

I just printed out a quick black & White copy and cut the surroundings with a siccor to see how it matched up and the template is a tad to small.

From my ruler, it looks to be about 1 CM off Horizontally and 3 MM off vertically, i could be off on the measurements, but its deffinatly a little off.

Here is a quick pic , i cut out the escape key to show a starting point then taped it in place. Also another suggestion the boarders around the keys could prolly be a tad thinner, with all the "Green" cut out from the ESC key it was very tight and it would prolly cause keys to stick and also possible ventalation problem? seeing as theres abount a MM space between the keys and the tray it fits into hot air also might vent out that way.

Re: The Paper Keyboard Skining Project (for 1000he)

if its off laterally and vertically, then that would be why the key is tight, I know the proportions are right, its just the skew factor that needs to be changed wink

Re: The Paper Keyboard Skining Project (for 1000he)

I would try printing it in microsoft word
make the orentation landscape, and insert the picture, stretch the picture to the exact edges of the paper, and then print

Re: The Paper Keyboard Skining Project (for 1000he)

basicaly if your using 2007 word:

First rightclick on image in thread -> save picture

open word:
pagesetup -> orientation -> landscape
then either drag the picture from the folder ontop of word, or go to Insert-> image -> navigate to picture
put cursor over the edge of picture until new stretch mouse icon which looks like this <->
drag sides of image to the edge of the paper.
do the same for the top and bottom of the paper
print and enjoy smile
