Anyone have any information (website links, pics etc), on how to install RAM on the 1008ha? I purchased a 2 gig stick with my 1008ha which should be here by Tuesday, so I'd like to prepare to install the memory before I start to open a nice piece of equipment up!

There are videos on youtube if you do a bit of searching.
It's not difficult at all though and imo no need for a walk through.
Open the ram door, locate the old ram, push both side clips to release the ram, lift gently away from the side clips, then pull away from the socket at a failrly shallow angle (30 or 45 degrees or so to the PCB).
To refit first turn your stick round so the cutout in the connector edge matches the notch in the socket, or how the old ram came out.
Push the ram gently in at the same sort of shallow angle, once fully pushed in, push down to secure the ram on those clips you originally released. The ram should then stay put..
DO NOT force anything!, be gentle and take your time.
It should take you 5 minutes. ![]()

If you are talking about the 1008HA (as the OP did) then the Ram door will be almost invisible. Because it does not have one.
The 1008HA is not easily upgradable like other Asus models. Here is a quick synopsis of how it's done but I have yet to get my new 1008HA or the 2GB Ram module I ordered with it. As far as I can tell by looking at the Chinese Ram upgrade photos referenced by Benny Lo on eeeuser, it looks like the following:
1. Put your protective grounding wrist strap on your skin and ground it to a suitable location. We all have a grounding strap, right? They're available at Radio Shack, Comp USA and other places for a couple of bucks. You might think it works okay to skip this step but lots of static discharge event damage shows up days, weeks or years after it happens. So while you may think you got away with it because everything seems to work when you're done you may have well ruined the MTBF rating of your components. The military knows this and you should too.
2. Remove 4 screws on back of 1008HA
3. Remove keyboard carefully by releasing small keeper clips along the FN keys one at a time from one side to the other (F1, F6, F10 & Insert). Then pry off the keyboard carefully from the top down (there is a sticky label that makes it seem hard but allegedly it will come up).
4. Remove keyboard connector and set keyboard assembly aside.
5. Remove the 5 visible black screws holding the top plate on. Also remove the yellow warranty void warning sticker and remove that screw (warranty alarm going off in your head now isn't it?).
6. Removed the blue ribbon cable connector located in the left side sheetmetal cutout and the other located in the right side sheetmetal cutout (white plug inserted in a beige receptical on motherboard near a white part number label).
7. Now look at the outside of the netbook. Using a pry tool pry apart the lower netbook case by releasing clips around the periphery being slow, deliberate and careful.
8. Once the lower case top half is off it will expose all the main components of the computer. There are a minimum of three ribbon cables that have to be disconnected at this point. A small one to the bottom left of the CPU fan, a big one at the end of the large yellow ribbon cable in the center of the machine, and a third small one on the upper left side of the black protective plastic membrane that sits on the bottom third of the machine where the wrist rest and mouse pad are.
9. At this point the motherboad can be lifted up from the left side gently exposing the power connector plug. This plug can now be disconnected freeing up the motherboard assembly.
10. The motherboard can now be turned over to expose a large black plastic shield, under which is the RAM module.
Or so I've gathered from Benny Lo's posting of the Chinese version of the ram upgrade instructions. Not for the faint of heart but looks like a satisfying challenge for geeks. I'm unsure about the warranty issue but would assume the warranty goes "bye bye" if you do this.
From the looks of it Asus probably could have made a nice little access door on the bottom of the unit lined up with the RAM module area since there is nothing between the bottom plastic and it. Why they chose not to do this is lost on me.
I won't know for sure how hard it really is until my new 1008HA and Ram module arrive from ZipZoomFly (been in "packed" status for 3 days now but not shipped yet).

Oooops , Thank you Jilted for that information , there are just too many models to follow. ![]()
No ram door !! , whatever next ![]()
I like the almost invisble reference hehe

Thank you for that Jlited! I am sure future owners of 1008ha will find this thread helpful. Well seems like I got some work to do as soon as I get the damn thing. Might as well put that OCZ Vertex SSD I have "laying" around while am at it.

Just installed RAM and SSD using the instructions above and everything went flawless. Great instructions! Exactly step by step to the tee.

I am getting mine Thursday and it will be undergoing surgery to add memory the same day. I am sure I will get the upgrade done with minimal effort. Besides it won't be my first warranty voided on the day of unboxing. Thanks for the tips and helpful info on opening the case.

Wow. And I've never held a 1008HA or tried it yet. When I wrote the instructions I just tried to translate what I saw in the photos on the Chinese site. Glad it works. The photos are worth a thousand words, by the way. That Chinese guy at Mobile01 gets all the credit. By the way, to see the photos on Firefox you may have to right click on the blue links and select "Open Link in New Window" for them to show up. Here's a link to the site (with special thanks to Benny Lo for the heads up):

P.S. My 1008HA in white shipped this PM from ZipZoomFly. Can't wait to get it.

I have tried to contact Mobile01 to ask permission to post copies of their photos that go along with the step-by-step instructions above. I would be hesitant to publicly post them in case they are in fact copyrighted. The photos are still available on their web site but I have copies stored in a zip file in case I do figure out how to get permission to use them. Their site is in Chinese and I am using Google translate to navigate it. Doesn't seem user friendly at all and I'm not holding my breath. More than likely I will take my own photos of this process (mine arrives June 1) before I can get permission from Mobile01.

what kind of 2GB ram is suitable for 1008HA? or any notebook 2GB ram will do?

According to Asus you should use:
one 2GB stick of 200-pin SO-DIMM DDR2-667 PC2-5300
There are reports of a discussion with an Asus engineer about the 1008HA where he advised against using higher-speed memory like DDR2-800 for some reason. Sounds good enough to me so I'm sticking to 667.
That being said, I noticed in the Italian web site referenced by resueee two posts up has photos showing the factory installed 1GB DDR2-800 (unless the reviewer did it). So there you go; what can you believe these days.

I just swapped mine for a 2GB stick, the one that was in there originally was a Samsung PC2 5300 DDR2 667MHz. I replaced it with a 2GB 667MHz and it works fine. Doing it wasn't too difficult, but it wasn't easy either. The photos on that Italian site were the best IMHO for examining and figuring out the process.

Looks pretty complicated and risky to swap out the memory. I wish they has just done the normal RAM access panel on the bottom. Wouldn't have added any weight or bulk. Oh well, I may just try and run with the 1GB for now.

By the way, you can Use Google to translate the site. It does a decent job.

Got my 2gb upgrade done today. It was far from fun but its done. I used Supertalent 800 spec stick. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820609422
It booted straight up and no issues at all. Very happy to have this done though. Biggest issue I had was getting the keyboard and touchpad connectors loose. Very easy when you can see how they operate but took a few minutes to make sure I didn't mess them up.

I finally upgraded my RAM to 2GB today. Whew! What a process. I was a pretty confident "know it all" at the outset. When it was done my confidence was shaken and I decided I'll never open this thing up again. Even though I was very careful prying the case halves apart I still broke a couple of the dinky tabs along the front edge. The sides aren't back 100%, especially around the port doors.
Shame on you Asus for advertising 2GB capability and then making it so crazy to try to do.
On the bright side I don't have to worry about organizing and keeping my sales receipt since I've voided warranty in more ways than one.

LOL, Jilted. I did the same. Hell if I know where the receipts are now! No more warranty.

Has anyone found a utube video that details this process? While some of you have found success based on the translated instructions, I am a little more conservative and probably less tech-savvy. Or, do you think I could take it to a geek sqaud or CompUSA and they would help?

here is some more inside view of the 1008ha
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/form … or_pdf=pdf
see how the 1008ha is cheaply made just to reduce cost, has anyone noticed the wifi card with only one antenna to pickup draft n signal which should have 2 or 3 antenna connection.
in hong kong asus will install the ram for you but at a cost which cost more than the ram itself, i know that many ppl will have problems taking their unit to asus from a different country, so it a DIY job or may be a local computer store will do it for you for a small cost.

Yesterday I upgraded the memory and swapped the disk for a 128GB SSD. This was easier than I thought it would be, certainly easier than the Acer Aspire One I upgraded 6 months ago. The photos in the links were very helpful as a starting point but once I started opening it up I found it very straightforward.
It all went back together again very nicely.![]()

I followed this whole process to the T, and this is far from the first system I've put together/taken apart. I took the 2GB module I was using in my eee1000 and put it into this machine, as well as a 64gb SSD. I reconnected everything, and before I went to snap the whole top back in I clicked the power button just to make sure...and nothing. No boot, no power no anything. I'd quadruple checked every connection, even plugged it in to see if somehow the battery was discharged.
I'm afraid I may have just junked a 2 day old unit with no warrentee to back me up.
Any suggestions?

I just want to add, for the timid among us, that I upgraded my 1000HE frm 1G to 2G of ram (easy on the 1000HE) and IT MADE NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE IN THE MACHINE'S PERFORMANCE.
FWIW. Also, I read on some site that there are two new versions of this machine announced both of which have more conventional doors on bottom for easy upgrades.
To offer this machine this way is ridiculous (though I bought one anyway).

I did the RAM Upgrade last weekend ... and got it on video too.
Here is a short writeup about the whole experience and videos at the bottom of the page -
